It’s Union-Busting Time In Douglas County Schools!

When we last discussed the Douglas County Board of Education–far and away the most politically activist school board in the state and the center of a major controversy over the funding of religious school tuition with tax dollars–we noted with amusement that the members of this board, which has made so much of the “political […]

Winning with Class, Melton Continues to Perform

Jovan Melton continues to outraise his opponent, Terry Todd, in Colorado State House District 41. Melton: $23k Todd: $11k But it is the source of that money that is most impressive. Not only has Melton now raised twice as much as his opponent, he has done so without taking any special interest money and a […]

Stay Classy, Donald Trump

From New York Daily News, we give you more of Mitt Romney’s BFF: In an address at the North Carolina State Republican Convention, Trump said the outcome of this season’s “Celebrity Apprentice” shows he’s no racist. “Somebody said, ‘Oh, because I brought up the birth certificate, I’m a racist,’ ” Trump said Friday. “I said, […]

Union Thugs to Storm Douglas County???

There seems to be more and more grumbling over the high handed actions of the GOP/ALEC elected DougCo school board. Recently some Board members and the Superintendent were criticized for using their phones to text while on stage at several graduation ceremonies. In addition, at the last BOE meeting there were calls for the removal […]

BREAKING: Last-Minute Plea For Civil Unions Shenanigans

UPDATE 9:35PM: With a politically huge “yes” vote from GOP Rep. B.J. Nikkel, Senate Bill 2 passes House Judiciary and heads for the House Finance Committee. —– UPDATE: Lynn Bartels of the Denver paper reports that Speaker Frank McNulty will not remove Rep. B.J. Nikkel from her post on the House Judiciary Committee ahead of […]

One More Time Class: The President Doesn’t Control Gas Prices

From Sunday’s New York Times: If only the president had the power to give us $2.50-a-gallon gasoline, as Newt Gingrich promised to do if he got to the White House. It is ridiculous to think that a president can. One can sympathize with consumers feeling the pain of higher gas prices. But the fundamental truth […]

McNulty’s Last Hurrah?

The Colorado Statesman’s Peter Marcus has an excellent write-up today on deteriorating relations in the Colorado House at the midpoint of this year’s legislative session. Tensions came to a head this week over the passage of House Bill 12-1005, an otherwise uncontroversial bill allowing local governments to make investments technically off-limits after the surprise downgrade […]

Matt Arnold Oozes The Classy

As posted to the personal Facebook page of Matt Arnold, ex-director of Clear The Bench and GOP candidate for an at-large seat on the University of Colorado Board of Regents. Close up–yup. He went there. As a CU Regent candidate. During his time as a failure attempting to gin up outrage against Colorado Supreme Court […]

Brophy Doubles Down On The Classy

FOX 31’s Eli Stokols reports: Colorado progressives are demanding an apology from Republican state Sen. Greg Brophy for comments he made on Twitter Saturday and to FOX31 Denver Monday echoing Rush Limbaugh’s controversial remarks about a woman’s right to access birth control… When asked about the comments by FOX31 Denver on Monday, Brophy didn’t apologize […]

Stay Classy, Senator Brophy

As Tweeted yesterday by Sen. Greg Brophy (R-Wray), noted for self-evident reasons.

“You’ve Made Your Last Advance”

Photo by Byron York, via Twitter The Washington Post reported yesterday afternoon, you’ve by now seen the photos: [Mitt] Romney’s policy address to the Detroit Economic Club was a chance to claim momentum for his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination, but the optics of his highly anticipated event may have undercut his message. The […]

“Voucherfying” Douglas County School Board Endorses Romney

Check out the press release we just received from Mitt Romney’s campaign: Boston, MA – Mitt Romney today announced the support of the members of the Douglas County Colorado Board of Education. “I’m truly grateful to earn the support of the members of the Douglas County Board of Education for my education reform agenda,” said […]

Jon Huntsman’s Last Stand?

The Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza reports: Former Utah governor Jon Huntsman appears to be the momentum candidate in New Hampshire ahead of today’s Republican presidential primary vote. Tracking polls conducted in the race show him moving up, he put in his best debate showing of the race thus far on Sunday, he’s up on television […]

Boehner, Republicans Roll Dice on Middle Finger to Middle Class

Republicans in the House today rejected a Senate-approved payroll tax deal. As Politico reports: With a tax hike looming for 160 million Americans on New Year’s Day, House Republicans rejected a Senate plan to extend the payroll tax holiday for two months and instead called for a conference committee to hammer out the differences between […]

Those Classy Congressional Aides

A first-hand account from one Janalee Filer of Pueblo from the “sit-in” at congressional offices this week in Washington, DC (as reported by Allison Sherry of the Denver paper Tuesday), courtesy Crooks and Liars–were there any cameras on this exchange? As narrated, something of a Marie Antoinette moment in the hallway outside Rep. Scott Tipton’s […]

Douglas County GOP Throws Down In Jefferson County School Board Race

That according to Ed News Colorado this weekend, noted for the record: Dougco Republican Party chairman Mark Baisley sent an email Thursday notifying party volunteers that they’ll be calling on behalf of Jefferson County school board candidates Preston Branaugh and Jim Powers until Tuesday. “Thank you for all of the phone calls that you have […]

Douglas County GOP Throws Down In Jefferson County School Board Race

That according to Ed News Colorado this weekend, noted for the record:

Dougco Republican Party chairman Mark Baisley sent an email Thursday notifying party volunteers that they’ll be calling on behalf of Jefferson County school board candidates Preston Branaugh and Jim Powers until Tuesday.

“Thank you for all of the phone calls that you have been making to get the vote out. The returns reported by the Douglas County Clerks office show that we are well ahead,” he wrote.

“We are shifting our focus to help our Republican friends in Jefferson County with their races. If you sign in to the website to make more calls, please note the change in the script, as we will be calling Jefferson County residents from now until November 1. Thanks!” [Pols emphasis]

A copy of the email was forwarded to Education News Colorado and others. Jeffco school board candidates Lesley Dahlkemper and Jill Fellman, Branaugh and Powers’ opponents, cited it Friday on their Facebook pages…

In 2009, Dougco’s Republican Party actively endorsed a four-member slate of conservatives in the non-partisan board races. The slate was elected and, 18 months later, the Dougco school board unanimously approved the state’s first district-run voucher pilot.

So when Jeffco’s Republican Party decided this year to actively promote conservative school board candidates Branaugh and Powers, also known as “the dads,” the two were repeatedly questioned about their positions on vouchers.

Their responses, particularly in early candidate forums, were not definitive.

Throughout this school board campaign in Jefferson County, the issue that the two openly partisan Republican candidates have been dogged by, but refused to get “mired in,” is the question of religious school vouchers–like they tried to institute in Douglas County after the conservative taker of that school board in 2009, now stalled in court with an injunction preventing them from going forward. A long and costly legal battle, pitting Douglas County public schools and religious school advocates against the constitutional prohibition on public funding for religious education–a battle these ideologues have been waiting for–is about to get underway.

Jefferson County is not Douglas County, but it is the state’s largest school district. And if the Douglas County GOP is helping now, the next logical question is whether Jefferson County has something to offer in return later. Given “The Dads'” vague answers to the question of support for DougCo-style private school vouchers, perhaps defraying legal expenses?

We know a lot of people on both sides of the aisle who hope not.

Stay Classy, County GOP Photoshopper

As the Washington Post explains: The Republican Party of Virginia is strongly condemning an e-mail sent by Loudoun County’s GOP committee that shows President Obama as a zombie with part of his skull missing and a bullet through his head. “The disgusting image used today on a mass e-mail has no place in our politics. […]

Last Day To “Activate” Your Voter Registration

If you’re registered to vote but still haven’t received a mail-in ballot for next Tuesday’s elections, it probably means you are an “inactive” status voter–perhaps you didn’t vote in the 2010 elections, or maybe there was a problem with correspondence to your address at some point. Whatever the case may be, today is the last […]

More drilling happening under Obama than last three administrations

It’s official. There is now more oil and gas drilling occurring under the Obama administration than under the administrations of George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and the second half of the Reagan administration. Salem Gebrekidan at Reuters has the story: “The number of rigs drilling for oil in the United States this […]

Stay Classy, Scott Brown

The junior Senator from Massachusetts’ Ken Buck “high heels” moment? TPM: Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA) was interviewed on a local talk radio show Thursday morning. And he had an interesting response to a recent line from Democratic frontrunner Elizabeth Warren. At a Democratic primary debate this week, Warren was asked how she paid for college […]

Stay Classy, “National Organization For Marriage”

“Pro-family” conservative group National Organization For Marriage welcomes Caspian Julius, son of Rep. Jared Polis and Marlon Reis, into the world via Twitter yesterday. That’s not quite what he said, of course, and we’re pretty sure Rep. Polis will do just fine bringing up Caspian in his Modern Family. A simple “Mazel tov” would have […]

Last Day to Register to Vote

Today, October 3, is the deadline to register to vote and still cast your ballot in the November election. To register to vote, or to request a mail ballot, visit the Secretary of State website.

We’ve heard from a couple of people who said that they couldn’t get the SOS’s “address change” portion of its website to work correctly. If you’re having any problems with any type of voter registration issue, let us know in the comments or at webmaster@coloradopols.com.
