As the Washington Post reports, Russian billionaires who both owe Vladimir Putin and also in a way own him (that’s how oligarchies work) are getting tired of the war on Ukraine:

Even as opinion polls report overwhelming public support for the military campaign, amid pervasive state propaganda and new laws outlawing criticism of the war, cracks are starting to show. The dividing lines among factions of the Russian economic elite are becoming more marked, and some of the tycoons — especially those who made their fortunes before President Vladimir Putin came to power — have begun, tentatively, to speak.

For many, the most immediate focus has been their own woes. Sweeping sanctions imposed by the West have brought down a new iron curtain on the Russian economy, freezing tens of billions of dollars of many of the tycoons’ assets along the way.

“In one day, they destroyed what was built over many years. It’s a catastrophe,” said one businessman who was summoned along with many of the country’s other richest men to meet Putin on the day of the invasion.

Meanwhile, Europe is working furiously wean itself off Russian fossil fuels, and  President Joe Biden has proposed a massive $33 billion aid package to Ukraine.

Continuing revelations about apprehension and outrage from Republican leadership against Donald Trump and some of their own members (see: Rep. Lauren Boebert) in the immediate aftermath of the January 6th , 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi pressing Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy to explain himself–The Hill:

Pelosi said during her weekly press conference that audio of McCarthy raising issues regarding rhetoric from fellow Republicans in the days after the attack was “inconsistent” with his past opposition to efforts such as installing magnetometers at the House chamber entrance.

“It was interesting to me that the leader talked about the concern that he had — if in fact those were his words, which that’s up to you to decide — that he was concerned about his members causing danger here and at the same time complaining that we have magnetometers to keep guns off the floor of the House. It just seemed inconsistent to me,” Pelosi said…

“And they can’t say on one breath, I’m afraid that they’re going to cause danger to other members, and at the same time complained about my having magnetometers on the floor of the House,” she added.

President Joe Biden is reportedly preparing to make good on campaign promises to provide some degree of student loan forgiveness–just how much and how soon remains unknown.

In a congressional hearing yesterday, Colorado’s Rep. Ken Buck let his inner nativist out to play in a wild race-baited tirade against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

The lawsuit filed by friends of Rep. Lauren Boebert trying to keep her Republican primary opponent Don Coram off the ballot was rejected–but not before demonstrating clearly where the GOP “establishment’s” loyalties lie.

The Colorado Supreme Court agrees that Rep. Dave “Let’s Go Brandon” Williams is a clown, and he’ll appear on the CD-5 ballot without his precious nickname.

► Joe O’Dea has no interest in telling you how he really feels about abortion, at least not until June 29th.

► Danielle Neuwschwanger, the upstart candidate for governor who has proven to be a persistent thorn in the backside of Republican anointee Heidi Ganahl, is going all the way to November as the candidate for Tom Tancredo’s old American Constitution Party.

The 2022 session of the Colorado legislature is headed into its final days, and just like they do every year the pundits are fretting about the number of bills still on the calendar. We’ve been here for long enough to tell you it always works out in the end.

Controversial legislation to tighten penalties for distribution of the deadly synthetic opioid drug fentanyl advances in the Colorado Senate after passing the House last week. Sponsors appear to have held off GOP attempts to impose zero-tolerance felony penalties for personal possession, a key sticking point.

Republicans stew helplessly as Democrats redirect TABOR refunds set for later this year to directly benefit people who actually need the money–like you.

► Gov. Jared Polis comes out against state legislation to outlaw flavored tobacco products, but that’s okay because the FDA is poised to do it nationally.

    1. Wow !!   Even when the victim exited in the middle of her direct testimony and did not return, causing the judge to STRIKE all of her testimony, the jury convicted him.

There will, of course, be an appeal.  Don't know if an appeals court will let striking the testimony and jury instruction to disregard anything and everything she said be sufficient to insure a "fair" trial.

  1. A year ago on this day, the General Assembly had 215 bills left on their calendar. As of yesterday, it was 328, not counting the bills introduced yesterday.

I know you Dead Guvs can't stand it when I write about things like this, but the Dems have done a poor job of managing the calendar, and that's a fact.

    1. Too bad you don't concern yourself with the qualities of the bills that are being passed and don't assign any blame to the Repubs for using every delaying tactic in the book to slow down significant legislation.  What a useless statistic especially when you don't specify how bills were introduced each year for comparison.  On the whole, the legislation that did get passed in the last two years shows what a tremendous job Dems did with their agenda particularly during a pandemic.

    2. “Dems have done a poor job……and that’s a fact.”

Obviously, this dudette doesn’t understand how the General Assembly works. I speak as a person who has been a registered lobbyist in the past. And, that’s a fact.

      1. I believe Awen is a she and she's been covering the legislature for a long time too.

Having said that I agree this is yearly concern that usually works itself out in time to declare victory at sine die.

  2. Any insightful person saying those numbers are significant, that the priorities of the Democratic leadership are buried, or that Democratic re-eleections hang on the accomplishment of a very few of the 328 (+yesterday & today actions) bills in process?

    1. We send our editors home on Friday afternoons. Please don't tell George Soros.

Did we get them all? We did see a few and fixed them and thank you.

  3. So Jared Polis now shows himself to be pro-vaping, too, even if kids are being harmed. I am not surprised, considering his apathy about climate change and awful air quality policy.

I will not vote for the Republican candidate or, probably, any third-party candidate for governor. I will write in a candidate who would be far more decent and humane than Polis.

      1. "I will write in a candidate who would be far more decent and humane than Polis."

As one of the few registered Republicans who hangs around this site, allow me to say please tell us who that candidate might be?

    1. Well, I've checked and the Voting Purity Fairy is completely out of coins to put underneath peoples' pillows this year. So, people can still cast votes that might help very bad candidates win, but they'll have to do it por gratis.
