Despite the unpopularity of President Donald Trump and his core agenda, U.S. Rep. Gabe Evans (R-CO) is on the campaign trail taking singular credit for the passage of Trump’s “monumental agenda” — and promoting himself as the “two-time Donald Trump-endorsed candidate for this race.”
In a fundraising email ahead of Saturday’s district assembly where delegates will select one or more candidates for the June primary election, Evans’ states that the passage of Trump’s agenda is only possible thanks to his vote: “Our district makes it possible to pass President Trump’s monumental agenda – without my seat, we lose the majority, and Democrats will bring the country to its knees by impeaching and obstructing the President and his entire cabinet. That’s what’s at stake in 2026.”
In fact, key pieces of the Trump-backed legislation, like the final version of the Big Beautiful Bill, passed by more than one vote, which means Evans could have voted no, and the bill would have passed.
The email also featured a tweet by Trump stating, “Congressman Gabe Evans is an America First Patriot who is doing a fantastic job representing Colorado’s 8th Congressional District!”
Evans, who last year took “100%” credit for the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill, made a similar pitch to Republicans at the GOP’s Adams County Assembly on Saturday.
“We have the one-vote majority in Washington, D.C. right now,” Evans told Adams County Republicans. “You all in this room, this district, is that one-vote majority,” said Evans at the Adams assembly. “We’ve proved we can win, we can win again, we know that our president likes winners. That’s why I’m proud to be the two-time Donald Trump-endorsed candidate for this race.”
Evans “Staying the Course” on Trump
Paul Teske, a distinguished professor at the University of Colorado Denver who writes the Colorado Inflection Point substack, notes that Evans has been “staying the course” on Trump.
“In CD8, Gabe Evans has pretty much backed the full Trump agenda, especially on immigration,” said Teske via email to the Colorado Times Recorder. “That was already going to make it difficult for him to win in a close fall 2026 re-election race, after winning by less than 3,000 votes in 2024.
“Now, with Trump’s very unpopular war with Iran, rising gas prices, a stagnant job economy, and falling stock market, Trump’s polls are weaker than ever. That will translate into high Democratic and independent turnout in November, and less enthusiasm for Republican candidates.”
An email to Evans’ campaign office with the following question was not answered: “I’m writing to find out if you have any misgivings about fully embracing Trump and taking sole credit for his agenda, as you’ve done in your appearances at the county assemblies and elsewhere?”
Republicans will choose among Evans, oil patch worker Adam DeRito, and others in Saturday’s GOP Congressional District 8 Assembly. Candidates who receive more than 30% of the votes will advance to the June primary.
Evans’ district is widely considered to be a critical battleground that will help determine which party controls the U.S. after November’s election.
