Gabe Evans, Sanctuary Congressman?

CO-08 GOP candidate Gabe Evans speaks at Trump’s anti-immigrant rally in Aurora in 2024.

A newsletter this week from a Colorado member of Congress raised some eyebrows, as recipients briefly wondered if it had gotten mixed up with an email blast from the other side of the aisle:

Helping Coloradans Navigate Federal Agencies

One of the most important services my office provides is helping constituents cut through federal bureaucracy and get answers when they need them.

Recently, my office has helped constituents who are experiencing delays with DACA renewals and employment authorization documents work directly with federal agencies so they can continue working and providing for their families.

For any DACA recipients who are looking to submit renewal application, we encourage you to do so at least 150 days before expiration if possible to ensure you get the help and resources that you need and avoid processing delays.

Protecting your privacy is a top priority. My office will never contact a federal agency on your behalf or share your personal information without your written authorization and consent. [Pols emphasis]

Who is this traitor offering to help DACA recipients get renewed, and promising sanctuary for undocumented immigrants who contact his office seeking aid? Rep. Jason Crow? Diana DeGette?

Wrong: it’s America’s Most Vulnerable Incumbent™, Republican Rep. Gabe Evans!

Evans won Colorado’s swing CO-08 in Congress on an unswerving platform of loyalty to Donald Trump and full-throated support for Trump’s mass deportation agenda–even going so far as to help Trump spread the wildly exaggerated stories of the “takeover” of the city of Aurora by Venezuelan gangs that other Republicans like Aurora’s Mayor Mike Coffman struggled to debunk.

But since Evans and Trump took office in January of 2025 and commenced the nationwide immigration crackdown formerly known as “Operation Aurora,” public support for Trump’s mass deportation campaign has flipped to majority opposition–an erosion directly caused by the administration’s own extreme recklessness in attempting to meet an arbitrary quota of deportees, combined with an official policy of confronting protesters that led to the deaths of American citizens.

Evans has at times paid lip service to the idea “gangsters, not grandmas” as the desired targets of mass deportation, even though most immigrants rounded up by the administration had no violent criminal record. But Evans has never meaningfully challenged the administration, consistently defending ICE’s tactics and arrests as “100%” justified while the data made these claims absurd.

What we have here is an attempt to placate voters Evans has spent the last years and a half alienating–under the radar, without actually admitting to any fault in the current mass deportation policy, and certainly not criticizing the Trump administration directly. It’s not nearly enough to undo the damage Evans has done to himself with Latino voters in the state’s most Latino district, but it could be just enough to upset loyal MAGA voters who naturally expect Evans to say something when he sees something.

When trying to please everyone, the result most often is pleasing no one.
