Boebert Getting Awfully Close To Betraying Trump On Epstein

As The Hill’s Rebecca Beitsch reported yesterday evening, Colorado GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert sided with Democrats on the House Oversight Committee yesterday, objecting to what they consider stalling tactics by the chairman of the committee James Comer to avoid forcing ousted Attorney General Pam Bondi to testify about the Jeffrey Epstein investigation–and in the process, openly suggesting that the real blame for Comer’s obstruction lies even higher:

House Oversight Committee Democrats are fuming over Republicans’ shift away from holding formal hearings, accusing the majority of trying to dodge any further action on subpoenas in the Epstein investigation and questioning whether the order came from the White House…

The move comes after Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) moved to subpoena then-Attorney General Pam Bondi, gaining support from all Democrats and four of her GOP colleagues on the panel. But after Bondi failed to appear for a deposition on April 14, Democrats say Republicans are trying to thwart an effort to hold her in contempt.

Once again, the Epstein files have made for an unusual alliance: Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) agrees with them.

“I hate it,” Boebert told The Hill over the change in format, saying it was coming from “higher up.” [Pols emphasis]

From here, it’s a little unclear just how far Boebert went in singling out Donald Trump as the ultimate reason for the committee’s inaction. Alternet, citing The Hill’s story, says that Boebert actually invoked Trump’s name:

[Boebert] speculated that the Republican lawmakers in charge of the committee “heard from the administration and have decided to do no oversight over the administration because they’re trying to please Donald Trump.” [Pols emphasis]

Rep. Suhas Subramanyam (D-Va.) confirmed Boebert’s suspicions, stating that “I’ve heard enough to strongly believe that the administration and Oversight Committee leadership is working in concert, and that’s not how oversight is supposed to work of an administration. I get they’re in the same party, but we shouldn’t be a rubber stamp committee when our job is to do oversight of the executive branch.”

But The Hill actually attributes the quote above about the committee “trying to please Donald Trump” to Democratic Rep. Suhas Subramanyam:

Rep. Suhas Subramanyam (D-Va.) also bashed the move, saying “my theory is that they heard from the administration and have decided to do no oversight over the administration because they’re trying to please Donald Trump.”

Either way, Boebert is once again very much on the defiant end of the spectrum on the continuing controversy over the Trump administration’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein investigation, after vacillating between helping force the release of (some of) the Epstein files and then declaring she doesn’t “give a rip about Epstein” when the Justice Department stalled their release in December.

The question as always is whether Boebert’s continuing dissent over the Epstein files makes it onto Trump’s retaliatory radar. Like Trump’s abortive disownment of Rep. Jeff Hurd, there will be no missing this if it happens–and as with Hurd, no guarantee it will happen for strategic reasons. Nothing would please Boebert’s extremely well-funded Democratic challenger Eileen Laubacher than to have Trump at war with Lauren Boebert going into a Democratic wave midterm election.

As for Lauren Boebert? The dismal fundraising was the first clue, and this is more evidence that maybe…she just doesn’t care anymore.
