Boebert Committing "Very Hostile Act" Against Trump Over Epstein Files

  •
  • by: Colorado Pols

With Congress back in session after a lengthy August recess made even longer by the premature adjournment of the U.S. House to forestall a vote to fully release the files from the case of deceased billionaire pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, which President Donald Trump now suspiciously calls a “Democrat hoax” after the Department of Justice mangled the original promised release of the files beyond recognition, ABC News reports that victims of Epstein’s sex trafficking ring are on Capitol Hill today demanding the justice that seemed imminent just weeks ago:

A group of Jeffrey Epstein survivors spoke out on Capitol Hill on Wednesday as part of a push to have all files related to the accused sex trafficker released.

“This is not a hoax. It’s not going to go away,” said Marina Lacerda, a central witness in Epstein’s 2019 indictment who spoke with ABC News…

Trump was asked about the press conference pushing for transparency on the Epstein files at the White House on Wednesday. He continued to insist it was a “hoax” distracting from his administration’s success.

“This is a Democrat hoax that never ends,” Trump claimed.

Survivor after survivor, however, implored lawmakers to back a bipartisan push from Republican Rep. Thomas Massie and Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna to compel the Justice Department to publicly release the Epstein files.

The Hill’s Mike Lillis reports that House GOP leaders are desperately trying to stop their members from signing on to Rep. Thomas Massie’s discharge petition:

House GOP leaders are urging their members to steer clear of the discharge petition aiming to force the Trump administration to release all the government files on Jeffrey Epstein.

In a closed-door meeting in the basement of the Capitol, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) called on GOP lawmakers to instead support the efforts of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which is seeking more disclosures on the Epstein case from the Justice Department (DOJ), the Epstein estate, and former federal law enforcement officials who worked on the case.

With Massie reportedly only two Republicans away from obtaining a majority to support his petition, NBC News relays the “most transparent administration in history’s” naked threats:

“Helping Thomas Massie and Liberal Democrats with their attention-seeking, while the DOJ is fully supporting a more comprehensive file release effort from the Oversight Committee, would be viewed as a very hostile act to the administration,” a White House official said.

One of the Republicans who has jumped ship to support the discharge petition over the White House’s increasingly shrill objections is Colorado’s Rep. Lauren Boebert. Boebert hasn’t commented publicly on her decision since Trump turned up the heat, but this morning she reposted a video from a social media influencer calling for prosecutions based on the forthcoming release of the files. We therefore can’t speak directly to Boebert’s motivations–but that’s not the case for Tom Massie:

“I think the best way to clear President Trump’s name is to release all the files,” Massie told MSNBC’s “All In” host Chris Hayes. “I actually don’t think he’s done anything criminal; I think he may be covering for some rich and powerful people that are friends of his…”

Boebert has a reputation for taking a contrary initial position on hot-button issues only to cave in after getting her alloted attention, like she did during the long and destructive fight over former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s leadership. Boebert is conspicuously “standing up to Trump” as of this writing, but Boebert could also be the first sign of collapse of Massie’s effort after a call from the Oval Office. If Boebert does stick to her proverbial guns over the Trump administration’s threats, it’s because she believes she has the political capital to do so–and that could be a sign that Trump’s grip on the Republican Party really is starting to crack. That in turn would put more vulnerable Trump loyalists like Gabe Evans in a serious bind.

As unlikely as it seems, we have to allow for the possibility that Boebert will prove our cynicism wrong. A golden opportunity to do so may be upon us.
