Republicans Have a Guy for a Thing!

Okay, maybe not.

If you didn’t realize that today is April Fool’s Day, you might have believed that Republicans had finally found someone to toss their name into the ring for a lost-cause statewide campaign — someone who was not named Lang Sias!

Right-wing radio host Jimmy Sengenberger published a website claiming that he would be a candidate for Secretary of State, which is a not-unbelievable claim given that Republicans still don’t have anybody willing to run for that office in November. We’ll give credit where it is due: Sengenberger’s “campaign” website is really funny. The site includes some great tongue-in-cheek “quotes” from alleged supporters:

What is less funny for Colorado Republicans is the sad fact that they still really need somebody to run for Secretary of State (SOS).

Republicans have had trouble finding candidates willing to seek statewide office in 2026, which is understandable given that Democrats have swept every statewide race dating back to 2018 (including two separate campaigns from Lang Sias). Republicans reached a new low in 2022 when Democrats won races for Governor, Attorney General, State Treasurer, and SOS by an average of nearly 14 points.

While there a bunch of nutballs seeking the GOP nomination for Governor, the other races have attracted less interest. El Paso County District Attorney Michael Allen quietly entered the race for Attorney General in January and hasn’t been seen much since. Former Senate President Kevin Grantham launched a campaign for State Treasurer in September but would have to really ramp things up just to be labeled “half-assed.” Grantham has raised very little money and was probably just hoping that Democrats would implode enough in the June Primary to give him an opening; alas, State Sen. Jeff Bridges (D-Greenwood Village) has cleared the field on the Democratic side and is a heavy favorite in November.

Republicans will hold their state assembly on April 11th in Pueblo, at which point a live body will almost certainly volunteer to be the sacrificial lamb against whichever Democrat (State Sen. Jessie Danielson or Jeffco Clerk and Recorder Amanda Gonzalez) wins the June Primary Election.

If Republicans just need a name to put behind an unserious campaign, they could do worse than allowing Sengenberger to keep this joke alive for a few more months.
