We Fixed it For You, Barb Kirkmeyer

“Secession Barb” Kirkmeyer

State Sen. Barbara Kirkmeyer, the Republican nominee in Colorado’s newest Congressional district (CO-08), used her social media accounts today to celebrate “Colorado Day,” the 146th anniversary of the founding of the 38th state.

This would be a completely fine and non-controversial statement for virtually any other Colorado politician to make. The problem in this case is that “Secession Barb” Kirkmeyer would have preferred to live in a different state in 2022.

Back in 2013, Kirkmeyer was a Weld County Commissioner who was one of the main advocates of a failed attempt by 11 counties to formally secede from Colorado and form their own state. This was a ludicrous idea that was never going to happen even if proponents such as “Secession Barb” were able to convince more than 41,000 people (representing less than 2% of Colorado voters) to agree to begin the process of forming a 51st state. But the fact remains that the proposal went far enough to make it onto the actual ballot in 11 counties; unless she was openly lying about her support for secession, Kirkmeyer likely cast her vote in favor of leaving Colorado.

In an alternate universe where these 11 counties actually did manage to secede from Colorado, “Secession Barb” would instead be marking the 9th anniversary of the birth of a 51st state. In this scenario, Kirkmeyer might even be running to be a Senator from North Colorado, or whatever they would have called their new state.

Anyway, it’s disingenuous at best for “Secession Barb” to be celebrating “Colorado Day” today, so we decided to fix her tweet to more accurately reflect her true beliefs:
