Closing: The Last Abortion Clinic In Missouri

  • by: Colorado Pols

CBS News reports as the wholesale rollback of abortion rights in conservative states gains momentum, this time with the state of Missouri facing the possible cutoff of abortion services at the state’s last clinic:

The last remaining abortion clinic in Missouri says it expects to be shut down this week, effectively ending legal abortion in the state.

In a statement Tuesday, Planned Parenthood said Missouri’s health department is “refusing to renew” its annual license to provide abortion in the state. If the license is not renewed by May 31, Missouri would become the first state without a functioning abortion clinic since 1973 when Roe v. Wade was decided…

“This is not a drill. This is not a warning. This is a real public health crisis,” said Dr. Leana Wen, president and CEO of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

Lisa Cox, a spokesperson for The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, told CBS News on Tuesday morning via email that Planned Parenthood’s license was “under review,” and did not respond to additional questions.

The possible administrative shutdown of Missouri’s only abortion clinic comes just after a new law imposing an arbitrary eight-week limit for abortion procedures in the state–a law made to be challenged in court like Alabama’s new abortion ban, setting up a potential legal vehicle for the overturning of Roe v. Wade before a solidifying conservative U.S. Supreme Court. The lack of any functioning abortion clinic in the state would not render that challenge moot, but it underscores the political determination of Missouri Republicans to curtail abortion rights by any available means.

And we’ll say it again–if Colorado Republicans ever regain a majority, this is their agenda too. As long as their name isn’t Cory Gardner, they’ll have no problem telling you so.

  1. C’mon, nobody is coming for your abortions. It’s not banned in Missouri they are just limiting the number of weeks you have to get one. Nobody needs more than an arbitrary 8 weeks to have an abortion. If you can’t get an abortion within 8 weeks you probably shouldn’t have one in the first place. Besides, it’s not illegal to have an abortion, it’s just illegal to give an abortion. The Constitution doesn’t even have the word abortion in it. It’s not overreach, it’s the will of the people. Elections have consequences. Fuck off sore losers. Just go across the border and get all the abortions you want.

Sorry I had to… I’m as pro-choice as they come but y’all sound all butthurt the right is taking plays from your own playbook. I am the last person to ban anything but can’t help but revel in how dismayed you are to see that the sword cuts both ways. All rights deserve protection and if you are unwilling to protect those you do not agree with, you should be less confounded when you lose the ones you do.

    1. If men could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament. Also cheap or free, and easily accessible and available until  the last month of pregnancy. Possibly with a VIP parking pass or coupon for pizza and wings.

      1. Are you implying that the trans-man milking their pregnancy in the media for all it's worth isn't a real man?  What a mean bigot you are!

    2. The difference being that one involves undergoing 9 months of extreme physical duress and risk of death in childbirth, plus 20+ years of responsibility for another human being whether one is ready for that or not, and the other limits the choice of weapon available for target shooting , strutting around looking manly, or rarely, self-defense.

Abortion rights and gun ownership rights are not and never have been equivalent, in spite of your fellow travelers best efforts to make them so.

      1. Regardless of priority you seem to lack clear distinction on which "limits the choice" and clearly endorse reasonable restriction – which unfortunately varies by individual therefore the fewer restrictions the wider the base of satisfied citizens. This should apply to any right and until you are able to come to terms with it you should be content reaping what you sow.

    3.  Nobody needs more than an arbitrary 8 weeks to have an abortion. If you can’t get an abortion within 8 weeks you probably shouldn’t have one in the first place. — Negev: Nobel Prize winning OB/GYN, right?

Is that Mansplained well enough for everyone?

Calculating the day your baby begins to develop and keeping track of your pregnancy dates can be a challenge. The development of pregnancy is counted from the first day of the woman’s last normal menstrual period (LMP), even though the development of the fetus does not begin until conception, which is about two weeks later.

That 14 year old Missouri girl raped by her father just needed to jump in the family car, and drive across Kansas to Colorado and get her abortion immediately.  Jeez, its not like it's big deal or anything, right?

      Back me up here, Negev…

            1. Which was, of course, the reason you always bring it up. If you're not distracting from abortion with gun pleas, you're distracting from gun laws with abortion nonsense. Well played.

  2. They are coming for abortions.  So we'll come for your guns.  Or, more accurately, consistent with SCOTUS precedent, will enact reasonable regulations, which are not prohibited by the Second Amendment, even under the SCOTUS majority's grossly wrong interpretation of the history of the Amendment.

    1. Soooo….

In the red states that want to ban abortion, let's "regulate" guns, too.

We can make gun ownership by men illegal and only allow women to own guns. That should level the rape and incest playing field. Guns won't be illegal so Negevs' Army (let's call them) shouldn't complain. They can always borrow a gun from their wife/girlfiend if they need one.

Such a policy would certainly diminish gun violence as well.

      1. Great idea.  But extend the gun ban to Sarah Palin and that crazy Colorado legislator who tried to take her gun on the airplane.

        1. Great idea.  But extend the gun ban to Sarah Palin and that crazy Colorado legislator who tried to take her gun on the airplane.

You mean Lori (In)Saine?  Definitely her.  Also Vicki (lost her) Marble(s) should have said gun ban applied to her.

          1. And the old lady who likes to talk about fisting in great detail.   I don't want her to have a gun either!

We wouldn’t know where it’s been.
