Rocky Uninterested In Alternatives?

The Colorado Independent reports something rather curious: Rocky Mountain News contributor Jason Salzman wrote in a column for the newspaper last week that “putting the Rocky on the market for one month over the holidays looks like it’s not a good-faith effort to find a buyer for the newspaper.” But the observation didn’t appear in […]

How to Get Promoted (On Jeffco Pols)

Here’s a quick refresher course for how to get your diaries promoted to the front page and how to get your banned. Click below for more:

A Half Century of Rejection – Or Why Dems Shouldn’t Appoint Aristocrats/Insiders to Senate Seats

As Michael Bennet and potentially Caroline Kennedy head to the U.S. Senate from Colorado and New York, respectively, let me roll out this Congressional Quarterly story for partisans who don’t care at all about the democratic – or, really undemocratic – implications of their senate appointments. The article makes the I-don’t-give-a-shit-about-anything-other-than-winning case for Democratic governors […]

Investigation Into GOP “Vote Buying” Proceeds

As a reminder, the Rocky Mountain News reported last week: A panel of three Democratic legislators and two Republicans will decide whether further investigation is warranted into vote-buying allegations against GOP Rep. David Balmer. House Speaker Andrew Romanoff, D-Denver, appointed the panel this week to look into a complaint filed against Balmer on Dec. 16 […]

The Drama Club Caucus

I’ve essentially been at a loss for words to accurately describe how absurd I find David Sirota‘s (and Kos‘) hissy fit over the selection of Michael Bennet for the open U.S. Senate seat. Sirota, in particular, has been in absolute hysterics over this selection. Here’s an ummm highlight, So as I said to start, the […]

More Bennet Reactions

Reporters around the country are figuring out that when Google asks “Did you mean: Michael Bennett,” the answer is no. New York Times: Mr. Bennet, flanked by his wife, Susan Daggett, and their three young daughters, said he would focus on health care, the economy and education, andhe promised to provide more policy details in […]

Ritter’s Gift to Republicans

( – promoted by Colorado Pols) Engineering has a principle called KISS — Keep It Simple Stupid.  I guess there is no corollary in the law or in Ritter’s experience.  Choose the most qualified, experienced, skilled and willing candidate who can run a campaign, serve the constituency well and keep getting elected.  Every opposition candidate’s […]

Harry Reid needs a lesson in Public Relations

If you say you’re against four different African-Americans being appointed to Illinois’ vacant Senate seat, does that make you a racist? Well, of course not.  But it does make you look like an idiot in the world of political communication and public relations.   Our beloved Senate Leader, Harry Reid, apparently didn’t see the potential […]

What to do about education?

With Michael Bennet being named to succeed Senator Ken Salazar, DPS will have to find a new Superintendent.  Perhaps this is a good time to consider the terrible state of public education in our State. As it stands now, we are creating a disaster in human, financial, and collateral damage terms by what is happening […]

The Importance of T

There has been a good and mostly successful effort by many people to spell my name correctly Pamela (Pam) Bennett.  Running for elected office, Aurora City Council At-Large, means I want 156,000 voters to know how I spell my name and recognize it on the ballot so they will vote for me. Michael Bennet, one […]

Colorado & the Golden Age of American Political Aristocracy

Aristocracy n Definition: Government by the best individuals or by a small privileged class. Though I’m not home in Denver right now (I’m in an airport heading there right now), I’m guessing there are many who are fairly to quite mystified by Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter’s (D) selection of Michael Bennet for U.S. Senate. It […]

What the Hell?!?

By now we’ve all heard the news that Denver Public Schools Superintendent Michael Bennet will be named Colorado’s next U.S. Senator tomorrow. Our reaction? What the hell? Governor Bill Ritter surely (hopefully) has a good reason for choosing Bennet to replace Ken Salazar, but from where we’re sitting it’s damn near impossible to see what […]

Ken Salazar “Too Nice?”

That’s the only nervousness expressed by the New York Times in an otherwise fairly glowing endorsement of Ken Salazar for Interior Secretary today: The word on Ken Salazar, tapped by President-elect Barack Obama to run the Interior Department, is that he is friendly, approachable, a good listener, a genial compromiser and a skillful broker of […]

Is Ken Salazar Too Nice?

“Is Ken Salazar Too Nice?” That’s what an op-ed in the New York Times asks, regarding Senator Salazar’s appointment to head the Interior Department: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01… The word on Ken Salazar, tapped by President-elect Barack Obama to run the Interior Department, is that he is friendly, approachable, a good listener, a genial compromiser and a skillful […]

Potential Replacements for a Potential Senator Perlmutter

Various media outlets have already reported on the circus that would begin in Denver should Mayor John Hickenlooper get the appointment to fill Senator Ken Salazar’s seat. Less discussed, except for a few diaries here and on Jeffco Pols, is what would happen should Congressman Ed Perlmutter get the nod instead. Perlmutter has helped turn […]

Jeff Bridges Discusses Potential CD-7 Democrats

Check out Jeff Bridges’ rundown of potential CD-7 Democrats posted over at Colorado Pols:

Jefferson County-Based Candidates

Renny Fagan

Fagan has made his interest known, and while he could make a strong candidate in a general election it’s hard to say how well he would do with the central committee Democrats. Fagan is a former state legislator, deputy Attorney General, and currently serves as Sen. Salazar’s Colorado State Director.

Andy Kerr

Kerr has been a fast-rising State Rep. from Lakewood, currently serving as the House Majority Whip. He is actively making his interest known as well, and could emerge as an opposite version of Fagan – his resume isn’t as strong, but he’s probably more well-known to the Democratic insiders who would choose the candidate. Of the Jefferson County candidates, Fagan and Kerr have been the most aggressive thus far.

Jason Bane

Bane almost pulled off a major upset over a well-known Republican in a race for Jefferson County Commissioner, winning more votes than any previous Democrat. He raised a record amount of money (more than $80,000) for a lower-tier race, and post-election results show Bane won the CD-7 part of JeffCo handily. This gives him something no other candidate mentioned here could use: Bane can say exactly how well he would do in the Jefferson County portion of CD-7. Bane has not actively sought support for a potential run, but his name has come up a number of times and he could be the sleeper in this race. (Full disclosure, he’s a good personal friend – which means I’m even more acutely aware of his political talent.)

Jim Polsfut

Polsfut briefly threw his hat in the ring for CD-7 back in 2006 before bowing out to support Perlmutter. Polsfut once ran for State Treasurer as well, and has a proven talent at fundraising. He’s also close with Gov. Bill Ritter.

Dave Thomas

He’s tried several times to win this seat, and isn’t likely to give it one more shot.

Sue Windels

Has a good base, but passed on CD-7 before and is coming off a tough loss in 2008. I haven’t heard that she would run.

Cheri Jahn

The term-limited State Rep. has her eyes on SD-20 in 2010, but might throw her name in the mix. She hasn’t made any noise about it, however.

Moe Keller

Keller is term-limited from her Senate seat in 2010, but this is really bad timing. She is the new chair of the Joint Budget Committee and would have to resign that post in order to run (see Morgan Carroll below). It’s doubtful she’d do that.

2008 Top Ten #3: The Schaffer/Abramoff Disaster

Then-Rep. Bob Schaffer parasails off the Northern Mariana Islands Photo credit: CSU Library Democrats and their allies went into 2008 with a thick notebook of opposition research against GOP Senate candidate Bob Schaffer. One of the chief sources of this wealth of damaging information was Schaffer’s own congressional archives, donated to the CSU Library after […]

Steve Johnson replacement coming soon

(Will they use their brains or go with the whackjob? – promoted by Colorado Pols) The Coloradoan reports that State Sen. Steve Johnson has submitted his resignation, and he’s soon to take his seat as a Larimer County Commissioner. A thrilling vacancy committee bloodletting is sure to come! State Sen. Steve Johnson has formally submitted […]

2008 Top Ten #6: Rep.-elect Jared Polis

One of this year’s most interesting success stories, Rep.-elect Jared Polis’ long road to glory, not to mention history as the first openly gay man elected to Congress…started out a little bumpy. Most people agree that his early primary campaign was a calamitous affair, with Polis showing commitment in the form of large personal checks […]

Tuesday Open Thread

“The transition from cause to effect, from event to event, is often carried on by secret steps, which our foresight cannot divine, and our sagacity is unable to trace. Evil may at some future period bring forth good; and good may bring forth evil, both equally unexpected.” –Joseph Addison

2008 Top Ten #8: The Schaffer/Denali Incident

Several of the top Colorado political stories this year feature the Senate race between Mark Udall and Bob Beauprez Schaffer. Certainly the most amusing one began here after a rather striking problem was discovered in a new Schaffer TV spot by our diligent readers, as reported in May by the Rocky Mountain News: They say […]

2008 Top Ten #9: Amendment 46 Goes Down

It’s important to understand the larger ramifications of this year’s defeat of the dubiously-named “Colorado Civil Rights Initiative” Amendment 46. Amendment 46, an affirmative action ban fronted in Colorado by the usual Independence Institute wingnut suspects, was actually part of a national campaign headed by California political operative Ward Connerly–who attempted to get the measure […]

2008 Top Ten #10: “Master Of The Terrible Press”

We can think of no better way to kick off our recap of historic 2008 in Colorado politics than to revisit a man who has been so very good to us in terms of furnishing entertaining subject matter for blog posts, Ali Hasan. As Westword reported last January: Ali and Miller held hands as they […]

Do we bail out Delta Airlines next?

Ok, I know as little about the U.S. car companies as most – ie most of the models they make are not worth considering – but that’s it. Who’s responsible for their disaster, can the present management & workers fix it, etc – no idea. We are now hearing talk about some of the airlines […]

Markey Makes Most Vulnerable Dems List

Like we’ve said for weeks now, Rep.-elect Betsy Markey’s blowout defeat of Marilyn Musgrave was just the first round, with the real test coming in 2010 as she tries to avoid becoming a one-term wonder and the GOP vigorously tries to render her exactly that. The Fort Collins Coloradoan’s Bob Moore reported on Christmas Day: […]
