House OKs New Drilling Rules

( – promoted by Colorado Pols) The Colorado House has given its approval to the update of oil and gas drilling regulations.   The rules also include new wildlife habitat protections, pit lining requirements, odor controls, chemical reporting regulations and numerous other provisions. They are scheduled to take effect this spring, pending legislative approval. The […]

Right Back At Ya, “Party of No”

The Denver Post reported this morning: The Senate on Tuesday postponed debating a bill to repeal a growth limit on the state budget as Democrats and Republicans discussed alternate approaches that might preserve funding for road construction… The debate over the Arveschoug-Bird provision, which limits growth in the state’s general fund to 6 percent a […]

Penry Nails His Own Problem

Without even knowing it, as the Greeley Tribune reports: State Democratic legislative leaders said Monday that they’re working under the premise that removing a cap on state general fund spending through legislation is constitutional despite Republican cries that it is not. Senate President Peter Groff said if other branches of government decide to challenge a […]

5280 Loves It Some Freshman Legislators

A few weeks late for Valentines day, but last Tuesday 5280 sent the literary equivalent of hand-delivered red carnations to four of its favorite freshman legislative crushes. From the State Senate, the magazine noted Democrat Senator Rollie Heath’s involvement with the repeal of Arveschoug-Bird – otherwise known as the ratchet effect. Senator Joyce Foster felt […]

GJ Sentinel Changes position on COGCC Rules

Put the brakes on new drilling rules The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel has taken a new stance on the pending COGCC Rules.   https://www.gjsentinel.com/opin… Put the brakes on new drilling rules By The Daily Sentinel Friday, March 06, 2009 A committee of the Colorado Legislature began reviewing new oil and gas regulations Friday – rules […]

My lunch with Jared

( – promoted by Colorado Pols) Jared is happy. No that doesn’t convey it accurately – he’s on the bow of the Titanic, with his arms outstretched, on top of the world. I talked with him for over an hour and he is clearly loving every bit of his job. So topic #1 was the […]

Tom Stone Works Springs GOP Dinner

The Colorado Statesman reports on last week’s El Paso County GOP Lincoln Day dinner, laying the scene for a rare treat: press coverage of Dick Wadhams’ opponent for Chairman of the Colorado Republican Party. More than 300 Republicans attended the $80-a-plate dinner at the Antlers Hilton, where they dined on chicken breasts in Marsala wine […]

Markey Missteps?

As the Fort Collins Coloradoan reports: Rep. Betsy Markey broke with the Democratic leadership in opposing a bill that would give bankruptcy judges the ability to lower mortgage payments for troubled homeowners. Markey, a Fort Collins Democrat, said the bill passed by the House Thursday night “had the right intentions, but the wrong approach.” “This […]

My sit-down with Treasurer Kennedy

( – promoted by Colorado Pols) I had the opportunity today to interview State Treasurer Cary Kennedy. She is easily the most personable elected official I have met to date (and that is a very high standard). She does an amazing job of connecting with people. She also clearly loves her job and feels very […]

Bennet Consolidating Support Among Democrats

Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet seems to be off to a good start in consolidating support among top-level Democrats and money people. Look at the list after the jump of hosts for a fundraiser tonight in Belmar. Also of particular note: Larry Mizel, who traditionally backs Republicans. Governor Bill Ritter U.S. Senator Mark Udall Congresswoman Diana […]

Coffman Ethics Hearing Liveblog

UPDATE: The Denver Post picks up where the Independent left off: U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman says an ethics group waged a two-year “partisan attack” against him while he served as Colorado’s secretary of state… “It was essentially a two-year jihad so they could go back to their donors and say they were doing a good […]

Meet John Flerlage

(More “citizen journalism” from Polsters! – promoted by Colorado Pols) John Flerlage, one of the two Democratic candidates for Congress from CD-6, joined me this morning on a windy Starbuck’s patio for a cup of coffee and a discussion concerning the issues that confront us, the policies that would best address those issues, and the […]

Ed Stein Lives On(Line)

The close of the Rocky Mountain News meant the loss of many good reporters, but also a great longtime cartoonist: Ed Stein. Fortunately for us, Stein’s work can still be seen…online.

Pueblo solar project under attack w/ poll

( – promoted by Colorado Pols) Apparently oblivious about the $300 million or so in subsidies that Colorado taxpayers lavish on oil and gas producers in the state, the spokesman for the Intermountain Rural Electric Association (IREA) and former CO state senator Bill Schroeder decries a concentrated solar project which could power between 60,000-90,000 homes […]

Actually, We Wanted The Rocky To Live

UPDATE: a refreshingly candid mea culpa, as the Denver Post updates: Rep. Jared Polis released the following statement this afternoon, apologizing for remarks he made over the weekend that new media “killed” the Rocky Mountain News. “I apologize to the entire Rocky Mountain News family and anyone who was offended by my recent remarks.” the […]

No Health Inspectors=Food Poisoning: Who Knew?

The Denver Post becomes the latest in a growing collection of major media outlets to note the deterioration of effective government, quality of life, etc. associated with El Paso County’s decades-long ideological experiment eviscerating its own revenue base. Stridently right-wing El Paso County has long collected a small fraction of what similar Colorado counties get […]

Penry for Governor? Um, No

Senate Minority Leader Josh Penry is apparently beginning to seriously engage in discussions about running for Governor, and may soon file paperwork to make it official. Penry is doing this quietly while he tries to gauge support for a potential run against Gov. Bill Ritter, and trying to keep this quiet is probably the smartest […]

What Schultheis shows us

As you probably already know, Republican State Senator Dave Schultheis shocked the public last week by accidentally saying something he really meant out loud.   He explained he could not vote in favor (a second time) of a bill that would require HIV testing for pregnant women, because it would help them escape from the […]

Michael Bennet Revisited

( – promoted by Colorado Pols) I had the pleasure of attending a reception for Senator Bennet this evening at Paula Noonan’s and Phil Doe’s house in South Jeffco, and found him to be sharper, wittier, more passionate, and more convincing as a U.S. Senator than conventional wisdom has yet conceded. Senator Bennet seems to […]

Golden Recall Effort Fails

As The Golden Transcript reports:

The movement to recall six sitting city council members including the mayor fell short on Monday, Feb. 23 when recall organizers failed to turn in any documentation by the 5 p.m. deadline…

…Petitions to recall Smith, and council members Karen Oxman, Joe Behm, Diane Chesbro, Bill Fisher and Marjorie Sloan were filed with the City Clerk’s office in December. The petitions claimed council had been fiscally irresponsible, lacked civility and improperly convened executive sessions.

Ward One Councilwoman Mary Weaver was the only sitting council member not recalled.

Recall organizers then had 60 days to collect enough signatures to force a special election with an estimated cost of $50,000.

“I’m glad the citizens of Golden recognize that the recall petitions are intended for serious breaches of the public’s trust, not for petty disagreements about city policy decisions” said City Manager Mike Bestor.

Phone calls made to two recall supporters were not returned, A third recall supporter declined to comment.

This is good news for many reasons, not the least that the city won’t have to spend unnecessary money for a recall election when a general election will be held in November anyway. There was no real reason for the recall effort aside from the personal gripes of a small minority.

Obama asks Dems to stay the course in Iraq.

. On Friday, 27 February, President Obama presented his plan for withdrawing all US military forces from Iraq within 16 months.   Except that it will take 19 months. And we will leave behind more combat power (wielded by fewer troops) than we kept in Germany after we defeated them in WW II.   …….. […]

Something old, something new

No, no one I know is getting married. I just ran across an interesting link to a page for some people who want to re-start the Whig party.  Interesting stuff! https://modernwhig.org/ This could be an idea whose time has come. I’ve seen quite a few online laments in the past few days from Republicans who […]

End of the Rocky Mountain News

UPDATE: July 10, 1861. Remains true today. Original post follows. Last edition publishes tomorrow. So much for long goodbyes. We are, well, needless to say. Colorado’s oldest newspaper will publish its final edition Friday. The Rocky Mountain News, less than two months away from its 150th anniversary, will be closed after a search for a […]

So much for that “Professor of Conservative Thought.”

I meant to post this a few weeks back, but now that it’s official, this is as good a time as any. University of Colorado Chancellor Bud Peterson will leave Boulder next month for the presidency post at Georgia Tech University Most likely going with him will be the much maligned idea of an endowed […]

My interview with Attorney General Suthers

( – promoted by Colorado Pols) I met this afternoon with Attorney General John Suthers. He was gracious enough to give me an hour of his time, and it was very illuminating. The biggest thing that hit me was we were about 30 minutes into the interview and I realized that he had not said […]
