  1. Senate Dems have a commanding lead over their opponents:

    April 1 cash-on-hand:

    Tester $12.7m

    Sheehy $1.9m

    Baldwin $10.3m

    Hovde $5.3m

    Slotkin $8.6m

    Rogers $1.4m

    Rosen $13.2m

    Brown $2.3m

    Brown $16.0m

    Moreno $1.8m

    Gallego $9.6m

    Lake $2.5m

    Casey $11.9m

    McCormick $6.2m

    1. Yes but remember, McCormick, Moreno, Hoevde and Sheedy can all self fund. Not that they necessarily will self fund. But they can.

There was a time when the nice thing about putting up a rich candidate was that it freed up $$$ from donors for less wealthy candidates. Think Ross Perot in '92, Michael Huffington in '94, Steve Forbes in '96, Mike Bloomberg in '01, Jared Polis every time he has run.

It was only in 2016 when a self-proclaimed billionaire thought not only would he not kick in any of his own money to his campaign but he would actually be able to take money out of the campaign by running. And he did.

      1. On a somewhat related note, loved Biden's remarks in Scranton yesterday:

"They wouldn't let us into their homes and their country clubs.

When I look at the economy, I look at it through the eyes of Scranton, not through the eyes of Mar-a-Lago."

Now I hope the DNC is nimble enough to push back every day on Don Snoreleone's after-court-hours political stunts. He shows up at a bodega yapping about how he's going to "win Harlem"? the next day a full-page reprint of his ad calling for the execution of the Central Park 5.  The next day recanting the fines he and his father paid for keeping "those people" out of their housing projects.  There's more than enough material to cover his after-hours stunts until the trial ends.

        1. I predict we will see more of Donnie's Disco Naps during trial as he spends his days in the courtroom and his nights plotting his campaign and attempting to raise money.

Can you imagine being a big donor and getting a phone call from him at 1 am asking for money?

And can you imagine the caliber of his social media postings that are generated at 3 am? Can you say "covfefe"?

He loved to talk about his incredible stamina while ridiculing Low Energy Jeb Bush and Snoozy Joe Biden.

Today is only Day 3. Barring declaration of a mistrial, we have another six or seven weeks of this.  ROFLMAO

    2. Problem is "Majority (51) Democratic (48) Independent (3) Minority (49) Republican (49),

West Virginia is not among the seats you are mentioning, and is widely assumed to be going Republican (to the ironically named "Justice").  That makes a 50-50 Senate, dependent on a VP to break ties.  To reach that, Democrats would need to run the table on ALL of their other elections.  Or go into seats that Republicans currently hold.  Or hope for the unlikely event of a Republican Senator, from a state with a Democratic Governor, with the Governor having power to appoint to fill vacancies, resigning or becoming incapacitated.

  2. NYT Sycophancy. David Kurtz at TPM.

Yesterday’s NYT apologia for Melania Trump was laugh-out-loud funny, by which I mean so, so bad. Reminiscent of its much-mocked coverage of Javanka during Trump I, the piece had all the usual hallmarks of NYT toadyism.

Let’s start with the passive-voice headline: “Melania Trump Avoids the Courtroom, but Is Said to Share Her Husband’s Anger”

“Said to” is one of the great journalistic sophistries. It does so much apparent work with so little actual effort.

What is this awkward headline construction meant to convey? That despite all her heartache over the Stormy Daniels affair, Melania, too, is outraged (OUTRAGED!) over Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg’s wrongful criminal prosecution of her husband.

How does the NYT know this? So glad you asked!

Melania hasn’t said anything publicly about her supposed outrage. She hasn’t attended legal proceedings with Trump. She hasn’t been by his side at the trial.

But wait! She’s has purportedly spoken “in private” about her feelings.

It’s the classic dipsy-do of the Javanka coverage: Why take any risk of speaking publicly when you can launder it through the NYT. We are never so courageous as we are in our private musings.

    1. David Kurtz finds this other jewel, and I mean JEWEL!

(You can play the video at the link above without going to twitter.)

If you take Donald Trump’s bizarro remarks over the weekend about the battle of Gettysburg and set them to a Ken Burns-style score with a mashup of vintage slapstick film clips, you arrive at this masterpiece:

The only sensible thing to do with Trump's "Gettysburg, Wow" speech in Pennsylvania was to make a one-minute documentary film of it. These are all his real words. I added some "bing bongs" at the start. "Never fight uphill, me boys! Never fight uphill." #FunWithPhotoshop

  3. Caught a minute of Senator Ron Johnson (R-Cheesehead) breathless squawking about the Boeing safety concerns. He's apparently forgotten the most recent oversight rollbacks happened under his Lord & Savior?

Did Trump Executive Orders Further Weaken FAA Oversight?

Two Executive Orders signed by President Donald Trump, that require the FAA to cut regulations further, may have tipped the balance by diminishing FAA authority and focusing the agency on working against its principal aim.

    1. Cognitive dissonance. We can have greater airline safety while reducing government safety regulations and inspections.

      1. It's the libertarian fantasy. These airlines will be admonished by the market because people won't want to fly with them after they are killed in a crash. And their loved ones can sue the airlines. Don't ask who will uphold contractual obligations in this fantasy world, or how many people die before the airlines bend to these market forces.

    1. With absolutely no sense of irony McConnell states a quick dismissal of this circus would be unprecedented!!  The Senate doesn’t work this way!!  Oh really?!?

Lots of handwringing by talking heads about “red state Democrats” if there is no trial. Seems like their strongest argument is that they’ve done their job: the bipartisan border bill that has effectively died in the House.

This level of dysfunction is mind-numbing.

      1. He can always claim that those brain farts he's been experiencing over the past few years have clouded his ability to recall history.

Yeah, it's not a lie if you can plausibly claim memory loss issues. (With apologies to George Costanza.)

        1. My day is complete. Watching Senator Cornpone stutter on the Senate floor like a scared child in the dark, followed by a meltdown on Twitter from Marge, is just delicious.

      2. Straight up partisan vote to dismiss the two counts.  NOT A SINGLE Republican Senator voted for the dismissal.  Heretic Murkowski voted "present" on one count rather than vote against dismissal.

I could dream about the House Impeachment managers babbling their nothing burger and sending it off to a committee that would never act on it.  But I can appreciate that the Senate has better things to do than waste time allowing Republicans to make more headlines .

  4. Who could have seen this coming?!?

Trump campaign asks for cut of candidates’ fundraising when they use his name and likeness

“Beginning tomorrow, we ask that all candidates and committees who choose to use President Trump’s name, image, and likeness split a minimum of 5% of all fundraising solicitations to Trump National Committee JFC. This includes but is not limited to sending to the house file, prospecting vendors, and advertising,” Trump co-campaign managers Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita wrote in the letter, which is dated April 15.
They add: “Any split that is higher than 5% will be seen favorably by the RNC and President Trump’s campaign and is routinely reported to the highest levels of leadership within both organizations.”

  5. Meanwhile, on the other side of the pond…

Bruce Grocott, member of the House of Lords, poses a question to David Cameron:

" Liz Truss says she would like to see the United Nations abolished, because she doesn't see a purpose for the organization. Do you have a message for those of us who don't see a purpose in Liz Truss ?"

Ooof. Mic drop. How all imbeciles in the Trumpy universe should be handled.

    1. PM Liz “less than a head of lettuce” Truss also spent time this week endorsing Donald J. Trump.

The Guardian hints at the Tory popularity at the moment.

Average of polls over a moving 10-day period, showing GB voting intention

      Labour 43.6%  Conservatives  23.2%

The estimate of seats now stands at

Labour 458  Lib Dem 50  Scottish National Party 28  Conservatives 90

      1. And that 23.2% represents something of a bump up as Rishi Sunak has tried to turn the page on 49-Day Liz' all too long tenure in office.
