Shawn Mitchell: Your Consoler-In-Chief Is "Unamerican"

  • by: JeffcoBlue

(I never thought Shawn Mitchell would do something more disgusting than that time he showed his loosey-whities… – promoted by ProgressiveCowgirl)

Yesterday, President Barack Obama flew to Colorado to comfort the victims of Friday morning’s tragic mass murder in Aurora and their families.

At the same time President Obama was getting ready to head out to meet with victims of the Aurora theater shooting and their families, Colorado Sen. Shawn Mitchell wrote this on Facebook.

It’s bad enough that Mitchell uses very similar language to what Rep. Mike Coffman repeatedly apologized for, calling Obama “Unamerican.” Mitchell is doing so deliberately, with the obvious intent of rendering Coffman’s statements less controversial through repetition.

The problem is, Obama wasn’t here this weekend to campaign. Obama has shut down his ads in Colorado for at least several more days in the aftermath of the theater shootings, as has his opponent Mitt Romney. Obama came here yesterday on a nonpolitical mission to console and reassure our neighbors, victims of a terrible act of pointless gun violence.

Senator Mitchell, if you can’t put your hatred of the President aside long enough to let him comfort your fellow Coloradans in their darkest hour, you are beneath contempt.

  1. Some may have noticed, in a different thread, I am stressing the position that the republican effort to suppress Americans’ right to vote is not just a plot on a reality show. It is a serious threat to your civil rights.

Anyone who deliberately tries to take away our constitutionally granted right to govern ourselves is committing an act of violence against the state and the people it serves.

It has long been a tactic of the Rove, Norquist, Luntz cabal (the hub of the party message machine) to take their own weaknesses or tendencies, or in this case, intentions, and project it onto their adversary. In this case, it is the charge of being un-American . Shawn Mitchell, reliable parrot that he is, will sing the NRA line and bash that “socialist*” in the White House at every opportunity.

No way, boys. It is you who are engaged in subversion. It is you who are enemies of the state. It is time for progressives, moderates, and responsible Republicans (wherever you are hiding) to step up and say, “enough is enough”…this country belongs to ALL of us, not just the wealthy and privileged and Christian (big C) few. We are starting to see some resistance to the excesses of the Queen of the Tea Party here lately. I hope this is a trend.

Trying to steal an election is a slap in the face of every American, and particularly those who gave their lives to defend the constitution you are trying to undermine. This is not just “Republicans being republicans”…These people aren’t Republicans as you remember them. They are free market zealots who have hijacked the party and push their coalition of hatred and greed to try to delete your civil right to vote. Shawn Mitchell is just a corporate bootlicker who wants to be a star.

    This is serious.

    * stands for something else.

      1. I was referring to Michelle Bachmann, as Sarah Palin seems to have abdicated the spotlight. However, I would ne’er deign to argue the point with someone with such obvious conservative props.

Please feel free to educate us…one and all.

          1. Thankfully, that’s a bridge too far with GOP leaders, at least for now. Anyway, I think it’s fair to bring that up here, given the recent tactic of Republicans questioning the “Americanism” (whatever that means) of Democrats. Bachmann’s attack on Huma Abedin fits in.

    1. First, it was a gay joke about Libertad, now it’s calling someone a “Queen” as a pejorative?

Instead of inferring that Senator Mitchell is a racist by asterisking a word and saying it stands for something else, maybe you could explain to the people who make up the “we” you like to refer to exactly what “Queen” means in the context you’re using it?

      1.

it’s calling someone a “Queen” as a pejorative?

How would calling either of those two “Queen of the Tea Party” be a pejorative? You are a joke.

Are you that desperate to pick a fight? I am ready…why don’t you address the issue I discuss in my post instead of another petty “gotcha” attempt?

Let’s talk about voter suppression, shall we? Let’s talk about what is un-American and what isn’t. Let’s talk about why such a demonstrable jerk as Senator Mitchell gets to decide the question. Bullshit…you and  your pals don’t get to define the term, American.

You are no more American than I. The difference is, “we” believe the American Dream is a gift we can share with the world. You and your comrades seem to think is is a possession you can covet and keep for yourself. Forget it…the people of the United States have had enough of your exclusionist crap. Prepare to lose.

        1. Nobody had brought up Palin or Bachman.  Not you, not me, not jb.

Who said I thought I was more American than you are? You’re pulling that straight out of your rear end.

I’m off to bed. Big day tomorrow. If you tell me you meant to refer to Bachmann, I’ll take your word for it.

          1. She’s the one that members of the Republican Party have been resisting lately, notably McCain, who has done an excellent job lately of returning to the circa-2000 McCain who I loved. Hell, if he could stay that guy while running for President just once, I’d vote for him.

            1. Because he didn’t say that.  Nobody did.  Are you sure he didn’t mean Palin?  Or Mitchell?

Mitchell was the topic of the diary, and nobody had even whiffed the other two names.

However, he told me he meant Bachmann, so I’ll take it.

PS Bachmann was a total idiot for inferring the Muslim Brotherhood stuff with Clinton’s staffer.  Dumb, dumb, dumb.

              1. I don’t think anyone would call Mitchell “Queen of the Tea Party,” no matter how hateful they intended to be. He’s not that important, nor is he at all effeminate.

              2. At her ABSOLUTE best, she’s trying to ruin Abedin’s reputation. But it’s worse, because by itself that gains her nothing. It’s anti-Islamic bigotry, it’s hate and fear mongering, it’s McCarthyism with a new target, and it’s meant to rile up and rally the assholes and haters.

  2. Shawn Mitchell exemplifies what is truly frightening about Republican party attitudes these days.  It’s all about intolerance and hate.

  3. It’s clear he lacks a direct relationship with both given his stupid rhetoric that unoriginally recycles the bile of the extreme fringes of American politics.

  4. I find his views, behaviors, and choices appalling on a regular basis, but what you see is what you get and what you get is what you see with him.

  5. who is trying everything in his power to distract his minions from the fact that their candidate is an unlikable robot who represents everything ACTUALLY wrong with America by painting a false picture of Obama with the fear mongering stereotypes that only play to the uneducated and regressive morons.

Because hiding your money in foreign countries and dodging your tax burden is quite patriotic.

    1. I really think it’s in poor taste to mock anyone who is seeking help and relief for an acknowledged challenge in their mental health. I read through the document you posted, and if that’s authentic, Shawn sounds like he was on the verge of a nervous breakdown in 2010. Seems he has not harmed anyone (aside from being a scumbag on Facebook) so I hope that means he got help.

  6. The City of Aurora was grateful to have President Obama visit us and impacted families in his very American role as President.  The problem with some Rs is that they don’t realize EVERYTHING is not always partisan and political.

The recent culture of some of the GOP has been on a more disturbing course where they really no longer tolerate a society where there are legitimate differences of opinion — even within their own party.

If you don’t agree with them, you are un-American, you are evil, you are a threat.  They dehumanize people with differences of opinion into objects to loathe and fear.

I actual feel badly for thinking Republicans who believe in tolerance, kindness and community. They have been abandoned by their party.

    1. You’ll find a lot of them here in this blog, registered as Democrats, Unaffiliated, Libertarian, or American Constitution Party members, because the Republican Party abandoned them long ago.  I only wish the rest of the thinking Republicans would do the same so the current dysfunctional GOP would fade away and we could replace it with something reminiscent of the old Republican Party…

    2. Did you happen to read the thread here the evening of the tragedy?  There seemed to be a couple of Ds who were very interested in making partisan hay over what happened.

Do they represent the entire Democratic party as it appears you are claiming Shawn Mitchell does the Republicans?

No.  That would be silly, right?

They dehumanize people with differences of opinion into objects to loathe and fear.

If you think this is only an R trait, you’re not really reading much here on Pols.

      1. I’m a bit tired of the insults that get regularly thrown around here, just because some posters have a difference of opinion (and are oftentimes oblivious to the conversation around them).  But here I’m talking about individual put-downs, rather than the broad-brush fearmongering that seems to be festering in the GOP.

Having said that, let’s get back to your other points…

Partisan hay: Sen. Carroll isn’t talking about partisan hay on the event itself, she’s talking about our country’s President making a visit to those in crisis.  There will always be discussion after a crisis of what we could do to have prevented it, and some of those ideas are bound to touch on political points.  But the visit of a President – who admirably made not a single political point either in his initial response nor during his visit – should not be in any way partisan.

Does this represent all Republicans:  Sen. Carroll herself said it doesn’t.  But at the same time we have to call out the fact that these kinds of comments now often get rave reviews from crowds of Republican listeners/readers/onlookers.  It’s not that there are a few radicals out there in the party any more, it’s now a majority view in the party that these outrageous comments are Good.  Do you expect those being denigrated to stand by, “because it’s just partisan rhetoric?”  Not bloody likely.

    3. Seriously – this kind of bs is not unique to the GOTP.

Though their brand of exclusionary politics is fairly consistent. Politically – how about let’s fix the voting rules so the current SOS pos can go back to doing the work of the taxpayers instead of whatever it is he’s doing.

Everyone who has one is heartbroken about the theater massacre. And Celena Hollis. And the crimes of Clarrisssa Lockhart, Allen Ford, Baby Low and the rest of the Denver Crips.

The fact that the underwear guy would chime in as a complete fool from his safe gov’t job is no surprise.  What else does he have to do – he won’t vote on the President’s job bill, he won’t extend the Buh tax cuts for 90% of America, and wasting everyone’s time for a 32nd pointless vote to repeal the ACA doesn’t take much time.
