Lundberg Will Challenge Polis In CD-2

  • by: Colorado Pols

Reports the AP:

One of the most conservative Republicans in the state Senate is taking on a two-term Democrat in a congressional district that includes the liberal stronghold of Boulder.

Sen. Kevin Lundberg of Berthoud said Monday that he will challenge Democratic Rep. Jared Polis in Colorado’s 2nd Congressional District…

Lundberg is not up for re-election in the state Senate until 2014, so he will remain in office if he fails to unseat Polis. The Republican says his challenge of Polis is “kind of like David versus Goliath.”

So far, the only official statement we can find is this on Sen. Kevin Lundberg’s website:

Based on strong support from citizens of the Second Congressional District Kevin has decided to move forward with a campaign.

To be honest, your guess is as good as ours as to what kind of “support” has truly been demonstrated for the comically arch-conservative Sen. Lundberg challenging incumbent Democratic Rep. Jared Polis. Lundberg has a reputation for taking the most embarrassingly far-out position in the General Assembly on just about everything, from climate change denial to his short-lived “Dr. Laura” divorce impediment bill. Lundberg’s website claims that “1,580 people have already given their support,” but his Facebook “Like” button only shows about 125–and some of them are almost certainly Democrats keeping tabs on him. Lundberg has been sending out emails to a list of Republicans asking for support and “prayers” (see an example of one of these emails after the jump), and had set a Jan. 7 deadline for making up his mind–apparently he heard enough from others to convince him to pull the trigger.

We’d say that if no more credible Republican challenger emerges to Rep. Polis, one of the wealthiest members of Congress and one of the more powerful members given his level of seniority, that can be taken as a sign that Republicans have written the CD-2 race off. Redistricting may have made CD-2 somewhat more competitive, but less so against a strong incumbent like Polis–and not at all for a hardcore ideologue like Lundberg. Quite frankly, Lundberg is so far-right that he would have a hard time winning in a district with a slight Republican lean.

In the meantime, on any issue you can name and as only Lundberg can, this should entertain.

Subject: Urgent Message from State Senator Kevin Lundberg

Dear friends,

Christmas is coming in just a few days and I know you are busy, but we have a rare chance for conservative, freedom-loving people, from all over Colorado and the nation to unseat an entrenched Democrat in Congress and time is short to make a final decision to launch the campaign.

Here is how The Colorado Statesman described the situation:

“In a possible match-up he acknowledges would be “kind of a David and Goliath competition,” one of the most conservative members of the Colorado Legislature announced late last week that he’s exploring a run against one of the state’s most powerful-and wealthiest-gay politicians.” (For the rest of the article: http://www.coloradostatesman.c…

The incumbent for Colorado’s 2nd CD is Jared Polis, who was quite comfortable with his Boulder-dominated district. But redistricting has dramatically changed the demographics. It still leans Democrat (by four points), but in a year when the people are fed up with Washington’s out-of-control spending (and taxing), an effective Republican message could win.

Jared Polis is, literally, the richest Democrat in Congress. He can self-fund his reelection campaign with as many millions as he wants to. If it is just a matter of who spends the most, he wins. Yet, I call this an extraordinary opportunity because I still believe people, not dollars, vote. Money helps, but if we have a campaign team of thousands of committed supporters from within the district and around the country, we could make history. We could send a message to the political establishment that We The People are taking back the reins of government.

I cannot win, and I will not run, if I am on my own. I will run, with a message of fiscal sanity and the core values the people of Colorado honor, if we can assemble that army of thousands.

Would you be willing to be a part of this army?

The first step is quite simple. Go to my exploratory committee website

(www.Lundberg2012.com) and sign up. The next step is to pass this on to anyone you know who still believes that government is established to secure our God given rights.

I am seeking God’s direction and guidance in this decision and would covet your prayers.

Already hundreds of people have signed up to be a part of this extraordinary opportunity to stem the blue tide that has swept over Colorado in the past few election cycles, but we need thousands! Thank you for considering what your part might be.

For Life and Liberty,

Colorado State Senator Kevin Lundberg

P.S. Please act soon, I must decide if we have the team to get this done by January 7. For information about my state legislative record, you may check out my state senate website: www.kevinlundberg.com.

  1. Lundberg supported the Federal Marriage Amendment, he opposed Ref C (’05 measure to suspend TABOR revenue limits), and he was the only state rep to vote against censuring Dougie Bruce for his photog kicking.  Right, like this ass has a snowball’s chance in the new CD-2.

  2. Thank you, Kevin. Sure you don’t want to just step down as a State Senator so you can focus your efforts full time on running against Polis? I think that would be the prudent thing to do here.

    All in favor, say aye.

    Aye.

      1. All Jared has to do is talk about his newborn son and Lundberg can give us all a 30 minute lecture on the evilness of gays raising children. Forget bringing more jobs and a better economy to CD2. That’s what is really important in Kevin’s word.

  3. Who else do the “Republicans” have?  Their bench in the second is very slim.  The reps from Loveland are just as crazy as Lundberg.  There’s no one in Boulder.  There’s no one in the mountainous counties.  In Jeffco there is Cheri Gerou, but she’s way to smart to take on Polis.  Then there’s the new guy in South Jeffco.  Are you kidding me?  Frankly, except for Gerou, the “Republicans” have no shot.

PS.  Senator Lundberg, ask Tim Lenord what I did to him in the primary for STate Senate last year.  You can expect the same phone call from me again.  Oh, this is fun.

A former Republican Jefferson County Chairman.

    1. Nothing wrong with criticizing policy stances, but Lundberg’s suggestion that people get to know Polis – and then he links to the article about Polis’s new child – is just Lundberg’s thinly-veiled attempt at a very personal attack.  Slimy.

      1. Quixotic = foolishly impractical especially in the pursuit of ideals; especially : marked by rash lofty romantic ideas.

Not so unfair. Sounds about perfect to me.

  4. Colorado will be a swing state again, and the best thing for Obama is to get Boulder voters turning out in high numbers. Clearly Lundberg never had a chance, but I can imagine a lot of people actively campaigning against him who might otherwise not have bothered much.

  5. Aggressive energy development must preserve the quality of our environment. Responsible stewardship of our great land demands we do no less for future generations.

What the hell does that mean?  And can I get my tickets now for the debate?  This guy is an embarrassment among the GOP state legislators…and that’s saying something.  +30 Polis might be conservative, so to speak.

    1. Independent men and women who looked beyond their own self-interests shaped this land of opportunity. They did not look to the government to guide their every step or guarantee every outcome.

Is that called ‘turgid prose’?  I could dispute the idea of who shaped this land of opportunity–and recall things like Pinkerton guards shooting down miners, or whatever, and the struggle of the workers against their gilded robber-barons, but that would be too easy.  Like the proverbial fish in the barrel.

But the idea that the Lundbergs of old (after leaving their rice fields in the old country, I suppose) went forward and built this land of opportunity without much more than a nod of contentment from the Founding Fathers ™ is further proof that Mr. Lundberg is, well, an idjit.

See history of US Cavalry in West; homestead and various railroad, etc. acts; general mining law…

Uhhh, guess what Kevin?  You’re an idjit.

  6. … state’s most powerful-and wealthiest-gay politicians.”

why is this hyphenated? His 3 thought adjective surely meant as a perjorative or to demean Polis but what Lundberg truly fears is this mighty triple play of wealth and seeming power (in a freshman Rep — yeah right) merged with gayness.  That last one just tips it over the edge for this ass.

    I cannot win …

    Well he’s got that right.

I am seeking God’s direction and guidance in this decision and would covet your prayers…

Why not leave God outta this Kevin.  This is your fool’s folly, your idiotic quest to embarass yourself.  I just love it when dick politicians invoke God to plead for donations — that’s some f*cked up core beliefs.  Lundberg is just wrong on so many levels.
