Santorum Steals Slogan From Gay Poet

Think Progress:

Earlier today, former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) announced that he will begin fundraising for a presidential run using the campaign slogan “Fighting to make America America again.” This eloquent turn of phrase, however, was not invented by Santorum. It is borrowed from the title of a pro-union, pro-racial justice, and pro-immigrant poem written by Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes – “Let America Be America Again.”

Dan Savage:

Langston Hughes was also a homo. And Hughes, unlike an idiot social conservative I could name/rename, wasn’t longing for a lost America. Hughes wasn’t trafficking in cheap and/or racist nostalgia for some supposed golden age. He was angry about America’s broken promises, by America’s failure to live up to its own land-of-the-free hype.

The poem is below the jump.

O, I’m the man who sailed those early seas

In search of what I meant to be my home-

For I’m the one who left dark Ireland’s shore,

And Poland’s plain, and England’s grassy lea,

And torn from Black Africa’s strand I came

To build a “homeland of the free.”

The free?

Who said the free? Not me?

Surely not me? The millions on relief today?

The millions shot down when we strike?

The millions who have nothing for our pay?

For all the dreams we’ve dreamed

And all the songs we’ve sung

And all the hopes we’ve held

And all the flags we’ve hung,

The millions who have nothing for our pay-

Except the dream that’s almost dead today.

O, let America be America again-

The land that never has been yet-

And yet must be-the land where every man is free.

The land that’s mine-the poor man’s, Indian’s, Negro’s, ME-

  1. abortion. Not enough replacement babies.  Oddly, he isn’t all for encouraging Latino immigration to solve that problem a lot quicker than the time it will take to grow all those babies and put them to work. Wonder if he blames people who use birth control to have the number of children they feel they can properly care for just as much?  Maybe that’s why Rs are as anti-birth control and anti-science based sex ed as they are anti-abortion. They just want to keep social security well supported. Who knew?

But then, I wonder how it is that the overwhelming majority of Rs, especially R pols, don’t have 8 or 10 or 15 children? Infertility? Frigidity? You don’t think they use any of the birth control methods (pretty much all the most effective ones) the right opposes as being baby killing methods!  Never mind they aren’t but we now know that being factual is really not their intention when they wish to make a point.

In any case, this explains what all those billboards saying that the most dangerous place for an African American baby is in the womb are all about.  Rs like Santorum are really deeply committed to the welfare of the African American and the gay communities as demonstrated by Santorum’s homage. Guess it’s evil abortion loving liberal Dems who are the real enemy those communities face.  Silly communities.  Why aren’t more of them voting for Republicans? Why don’t they love Santorum back?

    1. He said Republicans want to shrink government to the size that it can fit in your vagina.

If I can find it again, I think they had a chart showing that social cons totally use contraception at consistently high rates, and anecdotally it seems that pro lifers actually get a lot of abortions when they’re the ones on the hook, too. So their postions can only be regarded as maintaining their form of social control. That’s probably why tea partiers are almost all old white men.

        1. if there was any evidence they don’t use birth control. It goes with all the self loathing gay Rs that pop up at regular intervals, outed after years of being the most vocal supporters of anti-gay legislation. They seem to be into…Do what I  tell you inferior people to do.  Pay no attention to what I do myself.  I may like sex as much as anyone else but at least I have the decency to be ashamed and despise myself. No getting to enjoy it without guilt and shame and if you can’t afford more kids just behave yourself.  Now where did I put that “escort” service number?

      1. I had a job doing a survey that asked people about birth control and included education, income and religion. There was no significant difference on birth control use depending on whether people identified as Catholic,  Protestant, Jewish or none.  Mainly, educated middle class people used birth control.

My grandparents, whose parents were old fashioned Fiddler on the Roof type Jews back in the old country, all came from large families with 5 or 6 surviving and  a few more dying in infancy or childhood.  So I doubt that all the Christian right and Catholic  families of two and three kids that I know of happened without birth control.
