New Poll Surveys Colorado on Obama, Congress, Guns

  • by: Colorado Pols

We received the toplines today for a new poll commissioned by Mayors Against Illegal Guns from Harstad Research, part of a multistate survey using local pollsters from both sides of the aisle. The survey dug into attitudes in Colorado on gun safety legislation–not surprisingly, the poll finds overwhelming opposition to handgun bans in Colorado, and some opposition to prohibiting the sale of high-capacity magazines for firearms. Interestingly, though, Coloradans surveyed in this poll overwhelmingly oppose loosening existing gun laws, such as allowing concealed weapons on college campuses (note to supporters of the “Pack Heat Anywhere Act”).

Turning to elected officials, the poll shows very good favorables for both Colorado Sens. Mark Udall and Michael Bennet, and a 17-point net favorable rating for President Barack Obama. The favorables for both Senators and the President are significantly higher than Congress, though Colorado bucks the poll’s trend of preferring GOP representatives to Democrats.

Full toplines for the poll here–it’s interesting to see the numbers for regular voters broken out from gun-owning households, and the demographic snapshot that gives of a very considerable piece of the Colorado electorate. They’re not as monolithic–or partisan–as you might think.

      1. There are so many votes cast for political reasons, it’s not funny. I know of numerous incidents where the leadership has allowed someone to vote against the majority because the bill was DOA in the other house or they had a solid count and didn’t need the vote.

Betsy Markey did it on the HCR thing, didn’t she?

    1. We have the Colorado House, and it’s stellar leadership, to thank for all those new jobs this legislation is bound to produce.

It’s just not possible to say enough about what a great job these folks are doing getting Coloradans back to work . . . not possible.
