Dan Maes is planning on running for state party chair of the GOP. Or at least his supporters are pushing him in that direction. Admittedly, the only proof I can point to is a closed facebook group of Maes supporters called “Colorado Project 2012” which has since become a secret group, word on the street, and some revealing facebook comments. But yes… a concerted effort is underway.
At first glance, this seems laughable. But it might not be as far-fetched as you think. Back in the early part of this year, Tea Parties nationwide made a strategic decision to work within the Republican Party rather than form a third party. In Colorado, this meant taking over the Republican Party at the caucus level. Thus, when the caucuses were held in March, a large number of Tea Partiers became precinct commitee people. These, of course, are the people who elect the bonus members who get to vote for the party chair.
Now, even among Tea Partiers, Maes still wouldn’t have enough support to get elected. But it gets worse. Apparently, the number of bonus members per county is based off of the gubernatorial vote. Thus, in counties where Maes performed well (i.e. El Paso County), there will be a lot of bonus members voting for party chair. And finally, given the Dems interference in our primary when they ran ads for Maes, I wouldn’t put it past them to quietly hatch a plan to hamstring the GOP by helping Maes win.
I hope I don’t need to explain to my fellow Tea Partiers what a disaster this would be. If Dan Maes can’t even run his own campaign competently, how is he going to run a whole party? All that would do is keep the party fractured and focused on past divisions. But if a few of them are still confused, maybe some sunlight will help.
