After last year’s landslide victories for Colorado progressives and this year’s historic legislative session that started to address the backlog of important issues facing our state, conservatives tried in the summer of 2019 to intimidate progressive Colorado leaders by initiating recall elections against numerous elected officials they considered opportune targets.

Last Friday, the last of these misguided recalls failed. Far-right Republicans in Pueblo who had threatened to recall Senate President Leroy Garcia only turned in four signatures–four–instead of the 13,500 required. [1] After the chairman of the Colorado Republican Party Rep. Ken Buck promised to teach progressives “how to spell R-E-C-A-L-L,” and local political operatives fleeced the Republican base for thousands of dollars, all of their threats have come to nothing.

And now, progressives are mobilized for 2020. Thanks to everyone who turned out for events to defend lawmakers targeted by recall campaigns, a great deal of the work in these districts to ensure progressives get out the vote in the 2020 elections has already been done. Where conservatives are demoralized and weakened, progressives are stronger than ever–and ready to take this momentum into the next landslide election.

To everyone who helped make this victory possible, we’re grateful. And the fight goes on: here are more great ways to take action for the week of October 21:

100th Day Action for Rights, Dignity and Housing

It has now been almost 100 days into the new city council 2019 session and city council as a whole has not taken action on any of the policy changes proposed in the 100 day plan put out by people who are homeless and advocacy organizations. The full plan laid out 13 pages of actions which need to be taken by the council and the Mayor to end the criminalization of homelessness, provide basic sanitation services like port-a-lets and trash cans, address serious issues in shelters, and ultimately make housing attainable for poor people in Denver.

Spotlight On the Rocky Mountain Immigrant Advocacy Network

On October 22, 2019 Megan Hope, RMIAN’s Social Service Project Director, and Laura Lunn, RMIAN’s Detention Program Managing Attorney, will provide an overview of RMIAN’s work at the privately owned detention center in Aurora. They will be available to answer questions about the services they provide and hope to pierce the veil of mystery around their work, given that it largely takes place behind the fortified doors of the ICE prison.

Great Education Colorado: Join us for Ballots and Beers!

October 2019 Durango Green Drinks

Great Old Broads for Wilderness is a national grassroots organization, led by women, that engages and inspires activism to preserve and protect wilderness and wild lands. They have forty volunteer chapters, or “Broadbands,” located in 17 states that are focused on education, advocacy, outreach, and collaborative stewardship projects. All nine national staff are based in our Durango office, now located in Rivergate. They also have a vibrant Broadband chapter–the South San Juan Broads–based in Durango, which is currently working on Bighorn Sheep and Pika monitoring, cross cut saw trainings, stewardship, Animas River education, and more. As a women led organization, they bring knowledge, leadership, and humor to the conservation movement to protect our last wild places on earth.

Candlelight Vigil for Ingrid Encalada

This is a vigil to commemorate Ingrid’s 2nd year living in sanctuary. We will mourn the challenges of fighting against an unjust immigration system, and will rededicate ourselves to continue fighting for Ingrid and all those effected by the lack of justice of our immigration system. Join us for a short service at 6:30 p.m., followed by a candlelight walk through the neighborhood, and finishing back at UUCB with light refreshments.

Saturday Postcard Event in SoBo Lucky’s Market Cafe

Every Saturday, we invite activists as well as political, municipal and school board candidates to come mingle and do something meaningful together: writing postcards! Right now we are writing GOTV postcards for the upcoming Virginia election. With 2020 elections coming up, we will likely be writing different postcards depending on what the most urgent needs are.

One Year Later – Remembering the Victims of Anti-Semitism
