Stay Classy, Relay for Life Edition

  • by: Colorado Pols

Hearing about an odd incident up in Broomfield–Friday was the day of the Broomfield Relay for Life benefiting the American Cancer Society. It’s an annual event that usually draws a good-size crowd; this year’s was no exception.

Broomfield’s state representative, Rep. Dianne Primavera, however, had some trouble participating in this event in marked contrast to the past. Primavera, one of the key sponsors of health care (and especially cancer) legislation in the General Assembly, as well as a cancer survivor personally, was reportedly hit with ad-hoc restrictions resulting from Republicans berating race officials: first she was told her team could not wear T-shirts with Primavera’s name, then they were told her team couldn’t use Primavera’s name at all.

This comes after Primavera was reportedly refused a spot on stage with other officials at Broomfield’s Trail Adventure and Children’s Wellness Day last weekend–again, the story goes, at the insistence of local Republicans. The biggest issue, say Primavera’s supporters, is the Republican Primavera ousted in 2006–Bill “Hole in One” Berensnever had these problems.

Seriously, does this mean that representatives up for election must spend six months out of every two years shunning local events? That’s just ridiculous, and of course a routine appearance like these would never have been considered a problem–in fact she would have been criticized for not appearing. This was a conscious decision to make as much trouble for Primavera as possible.

House District 33 is considered one of the more favorable pickup opportunities for Republicans this year, and they’ve got a Leadership Program of the Rockies graduate running in HD-33 named Don Beezley whom Republicans profess to be quite enamored with. It’s widely known that the Republican strategy for 2010 is focused on the House and key swing seats like Primavera’s: next time you see a Democrat suddenly wrestling with surprise restrictions and pretense-free double standards from local officials, perhaps you’ll have found the next big race!

  1. or we will throw a temper tantrum” … Thus the Mantra of the Oh so suppressed and discriminated against, republicans.

    (eyes rolling)

As long as the Democrats rights of free (tee-shirt) speech are suppressed. all is well in the

    Greedy

    Obtuse

  2. than it’s ever reported.  I saw the very same kinds of treatment when I ran as a Dem in a very conservative district – what was allowed for Repub candidates was prohibited for Dems.  The more innocuous incidents occur when groups, clubs and other organizations broadly limit or prevent appearances by candidates of any party, as if they think they need to “protect” their members from the evils of politics.  The best opportunities for candidates to meet voters are often beyond reach.

  3. I’ve heard that this isn’t the first time the Broomfield GOP has tried to manipulate organizations within the county to put a stop to positive activities undertaken by local Democrats.  How pathetic. And, the local RFL should have handled this situation better. Primavera was the recipient of the American Cancer Society’s Leadership Award in 09 and I think that she has been invited previusly to participate in other town’s Relay for Life activities. She has introduced more cancer legislation than anyone else in Colorado, but go ahead make her feel unwelcome in her own hometown. Nice.

  4. A great cause is damaged and beneficiaries once more a victim of what some consider the dreaded disease, politics. The organizers and Republican’s(if they were behind it) owe Rep. Primavera an apology.

  5. I served with Representative Primavera this year in the house and on two committees.  She is extremely knowledgeable and hard working. You can tell she reads every bill in detail and very often will make them much better with her suggested amendments. Her work for cancer prevention and health is second to none.

She does an excellent job of serving her constituents and works across the aisle to get things done.  This is in sharp contrast with the nasty attacks against her from extreme partisans.

    1. Dianne Primavera co-sponsored HB10-1330.  The private contractor appointed by a state panel will collect information on everyone.  There will be a record for every doctor, dentist, and prescription event.  It won’t be long before your dentist knows what your psychiatrist says about you.  Primavera?  No thanks!

        1. is that the tinfoil doesn’t shield her from our thought waves that control her.  It acts as an antenna.  The more she wraps around herself, the stronger our control is!

God, we’re good atwhat we do;-)

  6. And, if Primavera was treated differently from others simply because of her party affiliation, that was obviously wrong.  But this brings to mind a pet peeve of mine:  when people running for office try to commandeer a non-political event for political gain.  While it’s perfectly fine, and commendable, to lend time to worthy causes, one shouldn’t try to transform them into personal campaign events.  That has always bugged me.

    1. I look at these events as a great way to have candidates and their volunteers meet the public.  The team spirit is great and letting voters know you are in public is good.

Even if your opponent is a Teabagging Party anti-human life bastard, at least making him or her show or be acknowledged as anti-cause is good.

  7. ALL politicians-not just Primavera-were asked not to CAMPAIGN at the Relay for Life. In the past, Primavera has plastered the place with campaign signs and has to be asked to remove them. It is about Cancer not campaigning. What is wrong with asking politicans ALL POLITICAINSto put their personalk agendas aside for one evening to raise money for Cancer. ???

  8. Every year…Primavera puts up campaign signs at the Relay…and every year she has to be asked to take them down because it is not a political event. She is the only politican that does this. She can’t put her agenda aside for one day? Did I mention…she is the only politican that does this? ALL POLITICANS-Rep and Dem, were asked not to turn the Relay into a political event. People in Broomfield who are not political asked that politics be kept out of it. These are people who choose not to get involved in political events. Why would we risk losing donors just so Primavera could campaign??? Quit whining.
