Charity or not, FEC shows no record of McInnis giving to RNC

The Denver Post’s Karen E. Crummy has done some nice reporting on John Hickenlooper’s tax returns and Scott McInnis’ decision not to release his. Obviously, the issue of charitable contributions is mushrooming.

But one thing in particular caught my eye in a follow-up story by Crummy in today’s Post, reporting on comments McInnis made on the Caplis and Silverman radio show Monday.

“The contributions I give to personally are families in need. And I give to the Republican National Committee,” he said.

Crummy’s article didn’t address how much McInnis gave to the RNC, which — unlike contributions to families in need — is a matter of public record. So I checked the Federal Election Commission database and got a surprising (to me) answer.

There’s no record of anyone named McInnis from Colorado giving to the Republican National Committee. In fact, the only record of a contribution from McInnis to a Republican group is $200 last year to the Colorado Republican Federal Campaign Committee.

I did find a $7,000 contribution from McInnis’ Western Way PAC to the RNC in 2004, but that’s money McInnis collected from other donors and then gave to the RNC.

Expect this issue to stick around for a bit.

For links, go to my Coloradoan blog: http://bit.ly/cz6syz

UPDATE NOTE: The $7,000 contribution to the RNC came from Friends of Scott McInnis, the predecessor committee of the Western Way PAC. It shows up in a search of the FEC site for contributions made by Western Way.

UPDATE 2: Karen Crummy followed up on this issue today. http://blogs.denverpost.com/th…

Here’s Sean Duffy’s explanation:

“In his mind, he meant the PAC donations he made over the years,” not personal donations, explained his spokesman Sean Duffy.

“It was a catch-all phrase,” Duffy further explained. “He meant all the Republican candidates the PAC gave to.”

  1. Deeper and deeper…

First, the stupid idea McInnis had that giving to the RNC constitutes “charity” giving. That just doesn’t fly with average people.

Especially when you owe your career to the RNC.

Second, that stupid “I shot an elk and gave the meat to charity” claim. Seriously?

Crummy and others should follow up and ask for specifics. Which butcher did he use? Any receipts? Which families got the meat? I have a feeling there was no elk…

McInnis brought this all on himself by his angry tirade with Caplis and Silverman a while back. It was reminiscent of Bob Schaeffer bringing up the Northern Marianas for no particularly good reason and getting crucified with it.

This is not a good year for Democrats. But if there’s one thing voters like even less, it’s someone who claims to give to charities – but doesn’t.

    1. RNC is a political organization and by law any money given to them dosen’t qualify as charitable giving.

This is just basic stuff !  My god he is stupid to say that.

      1. I’m betting he’s counting whatever donations came from his PAC or his left over campaign funds. Which certainly could be charitable but they weren’t his money.

    2. I mean, what year was this? Did he have the meat tested before donating it so he didn’t accidentally kill off the needy but oh so deserving family with a chronic wasting elk?

Receipts. I need receipts–my bookkeeper’s tireless, nagging mantra. Scott, where are your receipts?

      1. or typing, whatever.  Dave, here are some questions should you get that interview:

        Scott,

Your story of the charitable elk hunt, I think, is emblematic of your character.  Can you fill in some of the details? You know how curious voters are.

Where did you bag your elk, under what type of permit?  How often do you get a tag?

What’s you favorite season to hunt? Bow? Black powder?

Who’s the fortunate family you gave it to?  Do they meet their GOP bonafides?

Do you too whisper to the elk, Scott?

        Do they whisper back?

You can use it for free David, you don’t even need to cite me.

        1. somebody should send him up here and let him blast away–we have more goddamn elk than we know what to do with. Hell, RMNP has been quietly but very steadily “culling” them all winter long. I mean God fucking forbid we should reintroduce a predator up here to balance things out.

              1. I never quite know how to feel about Ed Bangs–he’s the most cautious man alive but he is a genuine advocate for wolf recovery. I think he’s overly pessimistic for the wolves sake. And that’s a good thing.

My biggest fear is that wolves are going to reintroduce themselves before DOW and US Fish and Wildlife Service finally pull their heads out of their asses and get a firm plan in place to protect them. I mean, it’s only been like 20 years that they’ve been discussing this.

The “shoot, shovel and shut up” policy seems to be on the rise in WY, where they have real protection and laws in place. I think you and I can safely predict the outcome if wolves get here on their own, without a federal reintroduction plan.

                  1. That’s what I love about wolves–they never, ever do things the easy way. No matter how much whitey has tried to wipe them out, they keep coming back. I love resilience.

                1. was that if wolves got here themselves, they were protected. Whereas if they are intentionally re-introduced, they could be labeled “experimental.” Experimental status allows for all kinds of management options that aren’t available otherwise. But then, I’ve been wrong before.

                  1. but they need a management plan to adequately protect them.  The devil is in the details, and the details do indeed have to do with the status.  For now the species to watch in that area is the Sage Grouse, and whether DOI’s attempt to (mostly) duck the issue will work.

      2. giving to RNC counts as charity – lie

Follow up, I gave to RNC – lie

I shot an elk and donated the meat to a needy family – lie

Much like Santa, I give personal contributions to needy families – lie

I mean, I don’t want to call McInnis a liar or anything, but he is a liar.

    1. What’s all this chatter about Mayor Hickenlooper’s charitable giving to Hamas, ACORN, etc…

I believe he would not intentionally give to a terrorist organization, but inquiring minds want to know more.

      1. possibly the RNC ate Elk? certainly they have eaten crow. Especially running a greedy, selfish unstable Lobbyist like Mcinnis.

But more to the reason I Chose to post here.

Libertad, when the Unedited tapes are seen by prosecutors and Judges from LA, Seattle to NY and Miami Find NO Malfeasance on the Part of ACORN… YOU and the rest of the dunderheads are beating a dead horse.

But do not let Facts and Reality get through Your Aluminum Hat.

      2. that’s low even by your standards.  What a desperate little turd you are.

Jiggle the handle, folks, make sure it goes all the way down…

        1. L’s post actually qualifies as libel. He’s really moved on from “amusing simpleton” to “despicable lying shit.”

L, please try to defend yourself, or are you a total coward too?

  2. that he withdraw from the race for governor. His campaign is on a runaway train headed for a precipice, and it appears the brakes have failed.

    Time to bail, congressman.

    1. He needs to battle on! He stands for the best of his party, and deserves this opportunity to run for office.

Besides if he quits (a Palin tradition) then we may never what he is hiding.  I really want to know. Maybe he does have a heart and is supporting pregnant school children or street people. Or the “grow your own elk for dinner” non-profit organization.

  3. McInnis’ wallet is tighter than a bull’s ass in fly season. Heck, no server in McInnis’ hometown of Glenwood ever wanted to wait on the guy because of his lousy tips.

In fact, in Parachute last year, McInnis talked about hunting as a boy, not as a man. That elk he shot was probably over 40 years ago. The only hunting he did as a man….well, let’s just say he was swinging single during most of his state rep days….

      1. Bill Ritter. Not having Ritter in the race forced Scooter to have to run a real campaign against a tough opponent. If Ritter was still in the race, it would be all about Ritter.

        Instead, it’s all about Scott.

  4. Could it be that all those years as a DC-insider under the thumbs of DeLay/Abramoff, or the years as a millionaire lawyer lobbyist has just made him a habitual liar, that Scott McInnis can literally not help himself?

And I give to the Republican National Committee.

Not I gave (or, more accurately, the contributors to my Congressional campaign account gave) to the RNC.  He says “I [as in me, Scott McInnis the most generous candidate running ever] give (as in past, present, future) to the RNC.”

Seriously, does he not think people can check?  Does Duffy and crew have no control over the ‘talent’?  Do they think that this is effective?  My goodness gracious, it’s not even May.

  5. this is nothing but good news for Hick.  i would sit back, let McMoron self-destruct, and walk into the first floor of the capitol in Janurary.
