  1. Denver ballots drop into the mail on Monday the 15th.

If you want to be an informed early voter, Denverite has a set of articles claiming "What you need to know about choosing between Kelly Brough and Mike Johnston, and how to decide in the races for City Council districts 8, 9 and 10."

I've now seen them in person twice and read as each has garnered some endorsements.  Little shift in my mind from what Colorado Newsline reported from the Apirl 12 "first debate since qualifying for the head-to-head June 6 runoff."

Neither Brough nor Johnston sought to draw a stark contrast with the other, and expressed broad agreement on most of the major issues facing the city, in a forum dominated by questions about homelessness and public safety.

Anyone have strong feelings about the mayoral candidates?  Anyone have a clear idea of a significant shift away from the policies of the current mayor?

      1. Your wife is right. Vote for the woman.

BTW, her Chamber of Commerce background is a plus if you want a pro-business mayor who will expand the tax base to allow for adequate revenues from businesses to fund all the free stuff people in Denver want and routinely authorize.

  2. Her early statements about arresting our homeless population and her work with the Chamber of Commerce disqualify Brough for me. I don't likeJohnston either, but I'm not one to undervote and I really want to stop Brough, so I'll begrudingly pick Johnston (especially because Tafoya, Roberts, Walsh, and Herod, who I do like to one degree or another, have endorsed).

    1. "her early statements…….." Doesn't Denver have an urban camping ban?

Would make sense to tell people that you have a choice: housing and treatment, or being arrested. One way or another, living on the streets is no longer acceptable.

I recall Kyle Clark interviewing Debbie Ortega prior to the first round of voting and asking her if she supported arresting homeless if they tried to stay on the streets. She never gave a clear answer even though he asked several times.

      1. Huh … I used to think that Conservatives favored individual liberty.

People experiencing homelessness have very different situations, and a simple “either/or” choice is unlikely to work — especially in a budget strapped Denver.

I’m hoping that Johnston & Brough stay true to their pledges to enact and maintain “evidence based” policy. Because the evidence hints that bans & sweeps aren’t the best way to deal, according to Cole Jurecka and Pranav Padmanabhan are public health researchers and Denver residents.   / Westword

Despite city officials’ claims that encampment sweeps are necessary for addressing public health and safety concerns, research, including a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), paints a different picture. Sweeps are cruel, ineffective and costly, and are likely worsening the health of people experiencing homelessness. The ongoing enforcement of these sweeps exacerbates cycles of violence against the population and further compromises their health outcomes. Moreover, sweeps are a demonstration in fiscal irresponsibility, as they siphon taxpayer money toward ineffective measures that fail to address the root causes of homelessness or provide sustainable solutions….

if Denver’s next mayor continues to enforce the camping bans by involuntarily displacing people, we can expect a 189 percent increase in overdose mortality and a one-year decrease in an already depressing life expectancy among unsheltered people who use drugs (7.42 years to 6.34 years out of a possible 10). We would also expect to see dramatic increases in hospitalizations — overburdening an already burned-out health-care system and burdening taxpayers with increased Medicaid and law enforcement costs that could be mitigated by prioritizing housing, preventive care and harm reduction.

        1. How do you know what situations those who are homeless might have? All homeless situations are different, as I learned when I worked in social services during my career. You’d be surprised at how many of those persons supposedly suffering addiction or mental illness knew fully what was going on and what they were doing.

“address the root causes of homelessness…..” You might also be surprised at the number of “advocates” for the homeless who have been drawing cushy salaries for years while the numbers of homeless grow.

      2. Criminalizing homelessness and arresting the unhoused is not a trait to be honored.  If I lived in Denver, I'd hold my nose and vote for Johnston.  And Brough's time at the Chamber of Commerce is not a plus at all.  The Chamber is no friend to the city's residents. Never has been

  3. My husband and I are in London this week. And wouldn't you know it, we had the misfortune of finding ourselves in a cab driven by a pro-BREXIT, Tory driver. Slowly. Through heavy traffic. From the airport to downtown.

    frown

    1. Did he place some plastics flowers on the Ninth Hole grave of the mother of his first three acknowledged children, as well as send flowers to Marla and Melania, along with the mothers of all the unacknowledged offspring?

      1. What a fucking charmer!??  It’s hardly any wonder that the way he’s ever gotten laid is rape or paid sex workers.

        1. The Orange Destruction has no redeeming qualities. To me, he seems to be evil incarnate. He, like Sauron, has successfully awakened the forces of darkness and assembled them against those to whom love is paramount.

His misinformed, hateful, army of orcs, goblins, and gunheads is set upon establishing their  soulless lord as supreme ruler of our land.

Luckily, “”Dark Brandon” is their bane and their path to extinction.

          Vote Blue…No Matter Who!

    2. On behalf of all the Commie Mommies, Socialista Sistas, and Tree-Hugging Earth Worshippers out there:

May Fat Donnie receive all the legal consequences and karma he has worked for so diligently. So Mote It Be.
