What is your DIFFERENT idea on what we should do in Ukraine?

My diary – my rules. Comments here on anything different that the U.S. should consider in Ukraine. Please limit to that topic.

If you think we should not be involved – write your own diary, don’t comment on that here.

Here’s my different idea:

Offer to all front line Russian troops that if they come over to the Ukraine side, the U.S. will issue them a green card, fly them to the U.S. and pay then 10K/mo. for the first year. And they can bring their family over to join them.

If even 100 soldiers do this, it will cause commanders in the Russian army to be watching their own soldiers closely decreasing trust within the units. If 1,000 we’ve then impacted unit effectiveness.

And maybe decrease the payment starting with Captains and at the General level its $1.00/mo. That would get a laugh from most frontline troops.

  1. Malcolm Nance just returned from the Ukraine. He says that there will be thousands of deaths from direct airstrikes, but that they will start with cyber warfare, knocking out the internet which is how most Ukrainians get news and communicate.

What are the cyber war options for the United States? Can we defend the Ukranian people’s ability to communicate?

I like your option because it’s not violent and appeals to individual self interest. It wouldn’t work for soldiers whose families are still under Russian control.

  2. How does one write a diary? I clicked on 'New Diary' under the Welcome and got a message that I don't have permission to access that.

Back on topic…..any reason why we couldn't just do a cyber attack that knocks out military communications for the forces around Ukraine? Nobody will know where the attacks come from.

Heck, the Dutch, of all people, hacked into Cozy Bear in Moscow in 2015-16 and watched in real time as those Russians hacked into the DNC servers. The Dutch even hacked into the surveillance camera outside the office and recorded who visited.

  3. I dunno’ David, sounds like a great way for Putin to drop a couple thousand agents into the U.S., and laugh himself silly all the way to his Swiss bank??

My suggestion: Putin v. Ttump in a live televised no-holds-barred cage match? . . .

. . . Putin will get Ukraine, but it’d be worth it to watch Ttump get his fat ass kicked by his man-crush.

(And I know, some of you are asking, “But, why Ttump?” Well, who else would you like better to have seen getting his ass kicked on live television?)

  4. Lucian Truscott suggested that if ANY attack occurred on a civilian airport, ALL United States landing rights be denied to Russians, and we encourage other countries to do the same.

I like the idea of a daily precis of Russian moves in Ukraine, providing a grand summary with ability to drill down for details — military movements, casualties reported, human rights violations described, with as much supporting detail as US intelligence and open-source media can provide.  Encourage allies and media outlets from anywhere outside Russia and its occupied territories to add material.

Old school tactics of expelling diplomats, shuttering embassies and consulates, strictly limiting delegates to the UN to NYC.

I like the idea of encouraging Russian soldiers to bug out.  I'd expand that sort of offering citizenship to all Russian civilians currently holding visas in the US — employees, students, tourists.  Make it an absolute choice — stay on special visa status that can lead to long-term residence or citizenship, or leave and go to Russia.

  5. A couple of additional ideas.

    1. Offer immediate membership in NATO to Finland, Sweden, & Switzerland. And tell Finland that within 24 hours of agreeing, if they want, there will be U.S. troops to help patrol their border with Russia.

    2. Give Moldova & Georgia offensive weapons and point out that with Russia busy, this is a good time to recover their breakaway regions. But make it clear that we will not join them, it's on them to accomplish it.

    3. Point out to Armenia and Azerbaijan that they have a much bigger problem than hating each other. And if they will agree to their proposed peace deal, if they want, NATO troops will patrol their border areas.

  6. Ok, how about this. Remember how in the 1500's – 1800's they had privateers? What if the West said that any cyber attacks against Russia will not be investigated or prosecuted.

So open season for hackers to drain the Russian banks, vandalize their infrastructure, etc. Anything. And there will be no consequences.

And maybe even offer rewards for success in certain activities.
