What you can do to fight back this week (February 10)

This week, we need your help to fight back against hate at the Colorado Capitol.

On Thursday, Colorado Republicans will attempt to pass one of the most openly discriminatory slates of anti-LGBT legislation we’ve seen in Colorado in years. The House State, Veterans, and Military Affairs Committee is expected to hear hours of testimony on bills that would roll back marriage equality in Colorado, vilify transgender folks, legitimize prejudice and discrimination based on religious belief, and even break up loving families.

“This is the most aggressive slate of anti-LGBTQ legislation introduced in the past decade,” says Daniel Ramos of One Colorado, the state’s leading LGBT advocacy group. “In the first few weeks of this legislative session, we have seen attacks on transgender Coloradans, same-sex parents, LGBTQ youth, and the list goes on. These bills do not represent who we are as Coloradans, and One Colorado will fight these bills every step of the way.”

Action item #1 this week: join our friends at One Colorado for a press conference at noon Thursday inside the West Foyer of the Colorado Capitol to speak out against this attack on our LGBT friends and neighbors. Then, after the press conference you’ll have the opportunity if you wish to testify against these terrible bills in a House committee hearing.

Thanks for helping our friends at One Colorado fight this awful throwback legislation. Decades ago, Colorado passed an unconstitutional anti-LGBT law, Amendment 2, for which we became known as the “hate state.” We’ve worked for years to make that shameful mistake right, and this latest round of hateful legislation from Colorado Republicans is a reminder that we can’t ever be complacent about protecting the rights of every single person. The worst is never more than one election away.

Rescheduled: The 2020 Triple Threat

The Trump Administration has continued to attack LGBTQ Coloradans, our environment, and women’s reproductive justice rights. This joint Small Donor Committee Fundraiser for One Colorado, Sierra Club Colorado, and Cobalt (formerly NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado) will allow donors to support all three organizations for the 2020 election cycle.

Rescheduled: Love Knows No Borders, No Walls February Vigil 2020

We gather each quarter to stand together for our neighbors and our families and against detention and deportation. Don’t miss the Love Knows No Borders, No Walls Vigil on Monday, February 4th, 6:00-7:00 pm at the ICE Detention Center at 3130 Oakland Street, in Aurora, CO. Bring a friend, signs and noisemakers (drums, horns, pot and pans). We’ll sing some love songs and chant together and there is an open mic for people directly impacted by the detention center to share.

Counting Coloradans

Counting Coloradans is a free educational event regarding the 2020 census hosted by Jewish Family Service and DRCOG. Presenters will speak about census safety and security concerns, details around the administration of the census, the importance of reaching “difficult-to-reach” populations, and how to assist people with completing the census.

Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition: Volunteers training – Help Coloradans become US Citizens

2020 will be a critical year and we want to ensure as many Coloradans as possible can earn their citizenship and register to vote for the general election! In preparation of CIRC’s campaign to naturalize Colorado green card holders in time for them to vote in the 2020 General Elections, we are starting a series of webinars aimed at increasing the capacity of community members and volunteers to understand the citizenship process and help CIRC pull off several of the mega-workshops we will be hosting through 2020.
