Tide turns- Undecideds go to Romanoff

Challenger Andrew Romanoff won more major caucus victories in Colorado’s U.S. Senate race Saturday, taking large margins over incumbent Michael Bennet in urban county assemblies.

Romanoff, former speaker of the state House of Representatives, won in Arapahoe, Douglas, Boulder, El Paso and Pueblo counties, among others, in early reports from the largest gatherings. Many of Colorado’s most populous counties met Saturday to elect delegates to the state Democratic convention in May.

(so much for the Spin that Romanoff’s only stronghold was in Denver)

One point of note – Boulder and El Paso Assemblies had formerly been for Bennet, but today switched to Romanoff.

From the Romanoff campaign:

U.S. Senate candidate Andrew Romanoff swept the major counties holding Democratic assemblies today, the “Super Saturday” when more than 70 percent of the delegates to the state Democratic assembly are being selected.

Gaining 14 points from his performance in the statewide precinct caucuses in March, Romanoff took El Paso County, 55 percent to 45 percent. Romanoff also moved Boulder County into his column and extended his lead in Arapahoe, Denver, Douglas, Jefferson and Pueblo counties.

Romanoff himself:

“The undecideds signed up with us…We’re thrilled, especially when we got outpsent about 10 to 1. You’ve got to fire up the troops and reach across the aisle, and I’ve done both.”

These results along with the past gains at caucus would seem to indicate a growing momentum for Romanoff – it is hard to see if this will be enough momentum to prevent Bennet from making 30% at State, but either way, this is a victory for Romanoff’s campaign.
