In 2015 I was shocked that Corey Gardner (R) was elected as a US Senator for Colorado. Now I’m no political guru but I feel like I pay attention to politics more than most people and it bothered me to be shocked by an election outcome. I must’ve been missing something. I thought maybe I had ended up in a belief bubble. This is the idea that we tend to surround ourselves with people who believe the same things we believe. To fix this, I decided to find people in Colorado who talk about politics and put them on a list on Twitter. I didn’t care if I agreed with them. I didn’t care if they were serious about politics. I only cared if they were in Colorado and talked about politics. I felt good, for a while, that I was reading opinions and interacting with people that I disagreed with. I was being a good citizen!
Unfortunately I overlooked something important that didn’t completely click for me until this morning when I saw this tweet…
After Parkland, @realDonaldTrump promised to do something about gun violence in America.
Today he endorsed a candidate who pointed a gun at a teenager in his television commercial. https://t.co/T3WY8oIBFO

The television commercial in question is titled, by Kemp’s campaign as “Liberals won’t like this.” That’s when it hit me. Republicans and conservatives* don’t care about having discussions with Democrats and liberals. They only care about “pissing off the libs” and they’ve been working at this strategy for years. This isn’t just some Republicans that do this. The prevailing strategy of the GOP is to troll Democrats. They don’t care if they’re right. They don’t even care if they believe what they’re saying. Their measure of success is “triggering” a liberal. Well, I would like to congratulate Republicans on their success. Anytime a Republican opens their mouth, I just want to shout at them to shut the fuck up because I know they are going to say something for the sole benefit of pissing me off so I’m done talking to Republicans.
I’ve genuinely tried asking Republicans about their beliefs only to be accused of concern trolling. Questions that I ask that start with “Do you really believe…?” get me blocked or get responses of whataboutism or that are equivalent to “I know you are but what am I?” When I ask a conservative* a genuine question I expect to get one of these responses and it has been a long time since I’ve been pleasantly surprised so I’m done asking these people their opinions because they don’t want me to listen to them. They just want me to be angry. Well congratu-fucking-lations! You’ve done it!
Republicans, your hard work and determination to pissing off the libs has succeeded. In your single-minded pursuit to anger us, you have ignored your religious values, perverted your patriotism and weakened our country to elect and support Donald Trump as our President. That kind of dedication to a goal is admirable. We are at a point where liberals all over the country are pissed off just by you opening your stupid mouths.
Congratulations.
* – “conservative” used to describe someone who thought that the federal government should be conservative with their laws to allow states to have more say in how they are governed. I don’t know what a modern conservative stands for anymore than just being not-a-liberal.
