      1. I only got to see about half of it but it was fantastic. I’ll probably rent it on Netflix as soon as it becomes available since it’s kind of hard to watch it here at work.

      1. so that I can take my time and soak it all in. What I saw last night was just brilliant and some of those photos were awesome. I heard Burns on NPR on Sunday and he said this project was in the making for ten years. When he takes on a subject, he does such a thoroughly brilliant job.

        1. The research is outstanding.  As is the presentation which America has come to appreciate from Ken Burns and Co.

It is humanity’s ageless struggle between a quick coin and preservation of the world’s treasures from that greed.  And it took the American form of democracy to begin to put a stop to that myopic shame.  Yet, the struggle endures.  From ignorant people sucking on fracing chemicals to the destruction of habitat and mysteriously disappearing life, it is an imperative struggle which each of us must join in our own way.

Anyone know when the completion of his series on the Dust Bowl will be?

      2. is that it emphasizes how establishing national parks was far from a no-brainer — there was lots of opposition, each time the issue was addressed by Congress, park by park, decade by decade.  The “tree huggers” had to fight over and over to protect extremely valuable places.  The battles today for wilderness protection, for example, are very similar.

Evidently, there has been a full blown campaign going on. I have never heard of Stand for the Children.  Looks like a major player.

Also, there evidently is a president of the BOE, who is commenting on the election; but NOT answering any questions on the state of the schools.

  2. Pete Coors for Senate featuring Cinammon Watson has become Norton for US Senate.

Bentley Rayburn for Congress which couldn’t muster 20% of the vote featuring Mike Hesse and George Culpepper has become McInnis for Governor.

Ramona Martinez for Congress that could not even manage to carry North or West Denver and featured Sue Casey and Joelle Martinez has now become Romanoff for US Senate.

An Arapahoe County jury found Aaron Thompson guilty today of child abuse resulting in death, and conspiracy to commit child abuse resulting in death yesterday, along with 29 other counts.

This story always fascinated and disturbed me, and I was very glad to see justice has been served against this evil, despicable man. I hope he spends the rest of his life in prison, but it’s still better than he deserves for what he did to his daughter.

RIP Aarone. I only wish you could have had a better family, and that you’d never been subjected to the brutal tortures that your father concocted.

    1. of the Governor’s Child Welfare Action Committee (to be released this week?) – the committee he appointed more than one year ago to examine why child fatalities are increasing significantly.  Aarone’s family was not unknown to the child protection system, and the older children went to school with substantial injuries, apparently not seen by school staff.  Child maltreatment and child fatalities continue to increase in Colorado, and the existing child protection system at times does not meet minimal standards of investigating reports of abuse and neglect.  We heard just this week that a child fatality in an El Paso County foster home earlier this year will now be investigated more closely, as evidence comes to light – months late – about the alleged lack of supervision and other problems in the home.

The child protection system needs major change.  An old saying comes to mind: You can’t expect different results if you keep doing things the same way.

      1. I think they just had overwhelming evidence from the other children in the home, and other people, particularly some who had had conversations with Shely Lowe, Thompson’s girlfriend (and co-conspirator).

A Bennet fundraiser in the Springs

    September 28th, 2009, 1:51 pm

The big bucks, of course, are from corporate donations. Politico reported today that Bennet, a member of the Banking Committee, had received $401,000 this year from the financial services industry, making him fifth on a list of Senate recipients of financial services campaign donations.

    1. Senate Votes NO on Mainstreet Bailout

H.R. 1106 is the chapter 13th bankruptcy bill that has the teeth to save citizens from home foreclosure.

This bill permits non-partial bankruptcy judges to modify loans by reducing interest rates, extending the loan repayment term and reducing home prices to market value. Therefore, it will make homes affordable again, thus stopping the growing homeless population. The banks hate the idea… they want all the control over Mainstreet. This law levels the playing field.

H.R. 1106 “Saving Families from Home Foreclosures” with the Durbin Amendment to “prevent mortgage foreclosures and preserve home values” was voted down in the Senate on April 30, 2009.

U.S. Senate Roll Call Votes 111th Congress -1st Session

Question: On the Amendment (Durbin Amdt. No. 1014; To prevent mortgage foreclosures and preserve home=2 0values.)

      AMENDMENT REJECTED

Listed below are the Senators who voted down or did not vote on the bill. H.R. 1106 was our “Mainstreet Bailout.” They allowed the bank lobbyist to win out. So much for measuring the success of our country by how we treat the least amongst us.

See the text of the legislation for Bill H.R. 1106 – GovTrack: H.R. 200 as Reported in House.

The Democrats who voted down the bill or did not vote are:

      Bennet (D-CO), Nay

      Byrd (D-WV), Nay

      Carper (D-DE), Nay

      Nelson (D-NE), Nay

      Pryor (D-AR), Nay

      Rockefeller (D-WV), Not Voting

      Specter (D-PA), Nay

      Tester (D-MT), Nay

Republicans all voted NO except Sessions (R-AL), who did not vote.

      1. I agree it was a bad vote, but there’s no guarantee cramdown would have done what it’s supporters (including myself) say it would.

In any case, I doubt Bennet would have voted this way on this amendment now.

But if this is the biggest gripe you’ve got with Bennet, you should probably ask if Andrew Romanoff would have voted yes.

        1. We’re not playing ping pong, just stating facts not hypotheticals. Although, Romanoff has a pretty good track record, IMHO.  If I could ask him a question, it might be his feelings regarding US antitrust law and how it affects the interests of consumers and entrepreneurs. If I’ve heard Republicans say “entrepreneur” one time, I’ve heard them say it a million times.  In actuality, I think financial services companies are sharks and small businesses are chumps.

Representing Colorado as our state’s next U.S. Senator, Michael will use his understanding and leadership on complex financial and economic issues to be a voice for Colorado’s working families.

          http://bennet.senate.gov/about/

      2. There’s definitely some low hanging fruit to pick.

Colorado Total State GDP, 2007  Billions of Dollars

        Agriculture/Forestry/Fisheries $2.0

        Mining $10.9

        Construction $12.4

        Manufacturing $15.2

        Transportation & Utilities $9.0

        Wholesale Trade $13.2

        Retail Trade $14.3

        Information $21.4

        Finance, Insurance, & Real-Estate $44.1

        Services $65.7

        Government $28.0

        1. Andrew Romanoff’s money will all come from single mothers and working families? You’ve got to be delusional if you don’t think Andrew Romanoff will take corporate campaign donations if he beats Bennet.

          1. …..more hypotheticals.  In Bennet’s short time in office we KNOW where his money is coming from.  I hate to do it rsb, but you have forced me to admit that I am feeling some “condescension.”

Senate Finance Committee Rejects Public Option Amendment

Republicans Say Proposals Lead to Total Government Control

    By William Branigin

    Washington Post Staff Writer

    Tuesday, September 29, 2009 3:40 PM

The Senate Finance Committee voted down a government-run “public option” as part an overhaul of the nation’s health-care system Tuesday, rejecting the first of two amendments offered by Democrats.

The panel’s chairman, Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.), and four other Democrats sided with Republicans in opposing a public-option amendment offered by Sen. John D. Rockefeller IV (D-W.Va.). Baucus said he voted against the politically volatile provision because he feared that a bill including it would not get the 60 votes it would need to pass on the Senate floor. The committee voted 15 to 8 to reject the amendment.

After the vote, the panel began debating a second public-option amendment introduced by Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.).

“We are going to get at this, and at this, and at this, until we succeed, because we believe in it so strongly,” Schumer said in offering his amendment. He disputed Baucus’s contention that a health-care reform bill including the public option could never pass the Senate, saying the more Americans hear about its benefits, “the more they like it.”

Rockefeller and Schumer said a public option would be the best way to give consumers an affordable choice in health insurance and rein in what they described as voracious, profit-driven private insurance companies.

        1. And what does it have to do with a public health insurance option being included in health care legislation? I agree that there’s too much corporate influence in Washington, but a lot of the people you listed in your “real money” list are people who many including myself happen to believe are on our side. There are also a lot of people who I don’t think have the best interest of the American people in mind.

Until the Supreme Court changes the law of the land, then they have the right to take the money and we have a right to call them out on it.

I would also like to see how much of the insurance portion of “finance/insurance/real estate” is actually from health insurance companies. I seem to remember seeing Max Baucus’s total amount of health care industry money being a lot higher than that.

      1. I agree.  The people who voted against the public option plan in this committee comprise most of the Democrats who might be against the plan overall.  Blanche Lincoln, Max Baucus, and Kent Conrad won’t be voting for a public option; one can only hope that Harry Reid backs up his recent talk with action to get them to vote “yes” on cloture, or to stay out of any reconciliation fight.
