Today is tax day, so I thought I’d make a list of some goods and services that I’m happy to help the government purchase:
* Education–teachers, school buildings, athletic facilities, etc.
* The military–pay for officers and enlisted men and women, weapons for their protection and ours, aircraft carriers, etc.
* Social security–My grandfather labored for 40 years with no pension. When his body began to fail him in old age, social security is what kept him out of poverty and allowed him to live into old age with some measure of dignity.
* Health care–Medicaid for the poor, and Medicare for the elderly is money well spent. We could not call ours a decent society if we did not offer these services.
* Food stamps–Yes, food stamps. If you are a child who has been brought into this world under less than ideal circumstances, food stamps can be the difference between eating a decent meal and eating dog food (yes, dog food–it happens).
* Parks–I love my parks.
* Roads, rails and runways–I like being able to travel, don’t you?
How about you?
