As Haners pointed out, the time has come to elect new leadership for the El Paso County Republicans, and it could not have come sooner.  Many of us have watched the failures of Garcia and Fisk, but have stayed quiet for the greater good.  Thankfully, we can do these elections every two years to settle these kinds of disputes.

First, one of the claims to fame that Garcia/Fisk will state is that they created a “strategic plan” or a “business plan” for the first time in El Paso County Republican History.  That may be true, but the goals of their strategic plan were just way off.

Their goals were to rebuild the Republican base (managing to offend most of the old-time volunteers in the process) and to raise money and have a full-time staff.  They totally failed to read the county bylaws, which state the true purpose of the Republican Party.  The party is not suppposed to be another non-profit — the party’s singular purpose is as follows — “the primary purpose of this organization shall be to elect Republican candidates to office.”  

So, let’s stop to see how they did?  Keith King, a fine conservative in Senate District 12, had to sweat it out on election night as he was nearly beaten by a Democrat.  The House District 18 candidate was a total disaster.  While our chances of defeating Merrifield were slim, this would have been a good opportunity to groom someone for two years from now.  And with Merrifield messing up on the education stuff so frequently, we could have had at least a decent presence.

But Garcia and Fisk’s biggest failure came in House District 17 where Kit Roupe lost by only 400 votes to a very liberal Democrat.  Why is that such a big issue?  Well, Garcia and Fisk proudly boasted shortly after the election that they had $15,000 in the bank!!! $15,000!!! (By this time they had paid off the $33,000 debt that they had accrued on “staff” and a database that did not timely print out walking lists.)

$10,000 of that should have been used to assist Kit Roupe’ with a mailing.  The standard adage in this business is that you turn the checking account over to the next officers with little or no money in it.  Now, for two elections in a row, we have had officers that have held onto money when it should have been spent on a candidate who was facing a tough general election. (Note:  Ed Jones v. John Morse two years ago).

Picture Napolean, attempting to lead a war — he has all the bullets, the machinery, the troops, and the resources — but at the end of the day Napolean (Mr. Garcia) comes back and has lost the war.  But everyone is so busy telling him what a wonderful job he did that they fail to realize the true purpose of the war.

Now, picture George Washington at Valley Forge.  Poor supplies, sickness rampant, the harsh winter tearing his army apart.  But he still had the right goal in mind and he did win the war.

I think that I would prefer the George Washington leader over Napolean.  The slate of Cami Bremer, Darryl Glen (where in the world will he find the time) and Dan Lenaught have promised to give us more Napolean like shenanigans.  That should make the Democrats happy.
