The dangerous connection between Barack Obama and Doug Lamborn.

Barack Obama is pleading for voters to not wait until election day but to cast their votes for him now.  That is itself the dangerous connection to Colorado’s 5th Congressional District Congressman, Doug Lamborn.  

How so?

Those voters who vote in haste and repent in liesure are a “good” thing for the candidate for whom, had those voters instead had patience and withheld their votes until election day, would have voted for a different candidate.  In a tight race, it’s all the difference, as it was for Doug Lamborn who won the 2006 Republican primary precisely because of early voting, before people learned more about him.  He “lost” the vote on election day as people rejected his sleazy campaign tactics, but the early voting carried the day for him and now we’re stuck with him.  The opinion is that we wouldn’t have been had those early voters held off until election day.  And that’s why Barack Obama is encouraging early voting, to benefit as did Doug Lamborn in 2006.

Obama’s internal polling shows McCain within 2 points of him in Pennsylvania.  And there’s the crux of why McCain is campaigning hard in Pennsylvania.  This race is tightening, not just in Pennsylvania, but, in other states as well.

The facts are that Obama needs voters to vote now before the race tightens further, before the shoe falls and other news breaks against him that he fears will cause voters to turn from him.  It’s a good strategy for Obama.  It was for Lamborn.  And that’s a dangerous connection, electing someone based on prematurely cast ballots, by voters who have remorse too late but cannot undo the damage done.
