Remember when Denver was a smoking crater in the ground — a barren landscape where homeless people roamed unchecked stealing cars and stabbing random pedestrians?
No? Oh.
The “crimenado” narrative that Colorado Republicans tried for years to advance was always nonsense, and statistics show that the Denver Metro area has consistently become less stabbie and stealie in recent years. Republicans such as Rep. Gabe Evans (R-Ft. Lupton) and gubernatorial hopeful Victor Marx are still trying to scare their supporters — people who largely don’t live anywhere near the Denver Metro area — into believing that your next carjacking is right around the corner, but it’s all nonsense.
Also nonsense is the more recent attempt by President Trump and others to claim that Colorado is so terrible that everybody is moving away!!! We fact-checked this ridiculousness back in January, but now we have additional Census data to refute those claims as well. Here’s how population numbers have (not) really shifted over the last couple of years for some of Colorado’s largest counties:

There are a few minor decreases in the chart above, but Colorado generally saw population GROWTH between 2024 and 2025. When you compare 2023 and 2025, however, the growth is evident across the board.
We suppose Republicans could still crow that Denver lost 98 people in 2025, but those were probably just the people who moved to Douglas County to steal things.
