Democratic candidate for Attorney General Stan Garnett announced an endorsement by the Fraternal Order of Police Colorado Lodge this morning, the state’s largest organization of current and former law enforcement officers. This is a big endorsement for Garnett that will weigh heavily in the decision making process of many independent voters. One might even consider the failure of the F.O.P. to endorse the incumbent chief law enforcement officer of Colorado intriguing all by itself!

Garnett’s release is copied below.

Garnett Wins Unanimous Support of Colorado’s Fraternal Order of Police

Colorado Attorney General candidate Stan Garnett today is proud to announce that he has won the unanimous endorsement of the Fraternal Order of Police Colorado State Lodge, the largest representative police organization not only in Colorado, but also the entire country.

“We endorsed him based on his professionalism, his dedication to law enforcement, his openness, plus his willingness and ability to work with individual officers,” said Michael Violette, Executive Director of the Fraternal Order of Police Colorado State Lodge. “Our membership, particularly in Boulder County, is very cognizant of the positive changes that took place when Stan took office as the Boulder County District Attorney.”

The official letter of endorsement from the organization states, in part, “Stan is an aggressive prosecutor and a strong advocate for the safety and the security of the people he represents. A battle-tested prosecutor, he has established himself as a person of uncommon passion and integrity.”

Garnett said he is honored and humbled to win the endorsement of the state FOP, which represents over 5,000 sworn law enforcement officers.

“Since taking office in the 20th Judicial District, I have made it a priority to work closely with every agency in my jurisdiction, to make sure the work of the dedicated officers in my county is supported and enhanced to the greatest degree possible by myself and my staff,” said Garnett. “As the next Attorney General, I will continue to make our citizens’ public safety a central priority, and I’m confident my strong relationship with Colorado’s law enforcement officers will be key to keeping that pledge.”

  1. that the FOP is

the largest representative police organization … in Colorado

Again, I’m not sure of their Colorado membership numbers, but last I heard it was around 5,000. While significant, that only represents a small fraction of the law enforcement community in the state…

So Garnett must favor the collective bargaining for all law enforcement officers in the country. The FOP is pushing hard to get this passed in Colorado and on the national level (which, is getting more traction than it has in CO).

  2. .

Don’t unions usually endorse Dems ?

What does Mr. Garnett think of Hick’s (decision/ non-decision) to not fire the police officers who starred in the recently released video ?

    .

    1. ..that Hick has authority to fire police officers?  I read that only the Manager of Safety has such authority.  Of course, Hick can fire the Manager, I suppose.

      1. .

I assumed that he was in charge.

That happens to be the basis for his campaign for Guv, that he has all this experience running the government of Denver.

If he’s just a figurehead, cheerleader, then how does that make him any more qualified than, say, Danny Maes ?

        .

      2. if you think that chain of commands in organizations can be violated at whim and people who are accused of wrong doing can be removed without due process or an adequate investigation and review by people who are knowledgeable about that facet of the organization.

What we are suppose to believe according to you is that Hickenlooper can’t wait until department heads have done their jobs before he makes an imperial decision without the facts or expertise regarding the matter.  Of course if he just made decisions without collaboration with the department heads and experts you would be calling him King Hickenlooper and calling him another Hitler.  Nothing Hickenlooper could do would be satisfactory to you not even his request for an FBI investigation..

What a fucking dolt you turned out to be.

          1. My comments were meant to reply to the My Bad post which showed a complete lack of understanding of due process or organization procedure.

I have a friend who was a police officer who was dismissed because of a false allegation that the city administration didn’t want to fight because the legal fees would have busted their budget.  They threw this individual under the bus to save a few dollars and it ruined his career.  He was accused without evidence and spent his entire savings trying to defend himself and had to abandon his efforts because to go to the Colorado Supreme Court would have cost another $30,000.

I think due process is essential to avoid lynch mobs.  If there is sufficient evidence in this incident to warrant dismissal or disciplinary action than it should be done in accordance with established procedure.  If Mayor Hickenlooper is not satisfied that the review was done properly then he has to decide what options are available for redress.

You just don’t do things on the fly because the mob is howling outside the door.  Barron X’s attitude is identical to the mob outside the jail in “To Kill a Mockingbird” where they ‘know’ that Tom Robinson is guilty of raping the white girl and want to lynch him that night.  It is even more cynical than that because he sees the victims in this incident as a means to discredit Hickenlooper and score political points.  For someone who is supposedly a Libertarian who cherishes our freedoms and protections, he shows no respect at all for due process thus my absolute disgust with what he is trying to do.

    1. I’m curious about that quote from the GJ Sentinel, “This doesn’t pass the smell test.”  The ad gives the impression that the newspaper itself came to that conclusion.  But wasn’t the newspaper simply reporting the opinion of someone else (Ferrandino, maybe)?

      1. The original ad which JeffcoBlue embeded has been taken down — “removed by the user.”

The following ad is currently on the Granett website, and is 2 seconds shorter.

No mention of a GJ Sentinel “smell test” quote in the new spot.

        1. Thanks.  The new ad substitutes the Ethics Watch statement for the previous display of the GJ Sentinel “smell test” quote.  I will take credit for pushing Garnett to clean up his ad!

  3. I’m not so sure I agree with this:

“This is a big endorsement for Garnett that will weigh heavily in the decision making process of many independent voters.”

I don’t think it will weigh heavily in the minds of many independent voters.   One more straw, sure, but “weigh heavily” seems a bit hyperbolic to me.
