What Colorado Needs Is Another GOP Gubernatorial Candidate

Ladies and gentlemen, we give you Steve House, chairman of the Adams County Republican Party and the fifth Republican to file to run for governor of Colorado in 2014: As reported today by Kurtis Lee of the Denver Post: House is now among five Republicans vying to unseat Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper in 2014. Sen. Greg […]

What’s with the conflicting stories about whether the Hudak-recall campaign has hired Kennedy Enterprises?

If you’ve been following the effort to recall State Sen. Evie Hudak, you know that conservative honchos, including the Independence Institute’s Dave Kopel and Morse-recall spokeswoman Jennifer Kerns, have expressed skepticism about whether the Hudak recall campaign can collect enough signatures to put the recall measure on the ballot. The uphill battle to gather signatures […]

This Is What Broken Government Looks Like

UPDATE #2: Washington Post: "We've been locked into a fight over here, trying to bring government down to size, trying to do our best to stop Obamacare," Boehner said. "We fought the good fight; we just didn't win." Boehner also said he would "absolutely" allow a vote on the Senate plan even if a majority […]

What Do (a Few) Colorado Democrats Have in Common with Tea Party Anarchists?

Yes, I know that the very idea of conflating the machinations of the Tea Party with past practices of Democratic members of the Colorado Legislature is repulsive.  But, for a few minutes (for purposes of the following exercise) try to set aside your horror and dispassionately consider the behavioral commonalities noted below.  (This hurts me […]

On KLZ, Brophy explains what’s required to hold together the GOP base

(Frogs and snails and puppy-dog tails! – promoted by Colorado Pols) I like it when conservative talk radio hits on this question: What's the winning formula for a GOP candidate in Colorado? On KLZ's Grassroots Radio last Friday, gubernatorial candidate Greg Brophy talked about why he'll triumph next year, and it made for provocative radio. […]

What Sec of State would ever say that “you don’t have to live in the district in order to be able to vote there?”

(Promoted by Colorado Pols) Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler told KNUS talk-radio host Steve Kelley yesterday: "Now, apparently, you don’t have to live in the district in order to be able to vote there, which I think is just absurd." Listen to Gessler on KNUS radio 9-18-13 Gessler's comment to Kelley contradicts voting rules […]

What do throwing a chicken from a radio-station window and an ethics compaint have in common?

Three weeks ago, FOX 31 aired a story about Colorado’s state-owned jet, including the fact that Gov. John Hickenlooper flew on the plane, along with businessman Ken Gart and his son, to the 2012 Pro Cycling Challenge in Durango. The FOX 31 story wasn’t received very well. Denver Post editorial writer Tim Hoover reviewed the […]

Again, What The Hell Is Wrong With The Pueblo Chieftain?

As the Colorado Independent's John Tomasic reports, also noted by our friend Jason Salzman yesterday: In the storm of passions that erupted this spring in Colorado around proposed state gun-control laws, The Pueblo Chieftain made little attempt to hide its opposition and blasted Pueblo Democratic Senator Angela Giron for supporting the measures… On Sunday, activist group ProgressNow […]

Gessler agrees with Boyles that Hick delayed Dunlap execution because of what would’ve been said at NYC cocktail parties

Appearing on KNUS’ Peter Boyles show yesterday, Scott Gessler lit into top Colorado Democrats, saying he thinks Senate President John Morse said “stuff like, people who own guns are a mental sickness.” Gessler also agreed with Boyles, when he said Gov. Hick delayed the killing of murderer Nathan Dunlap because Hick couldn’t have gone to […]

The Curious Case of George Brauchler, and What it Means for Hickenlooper

As The Denver Post's Lynn Bartels reported yesterday, Arapahoe County District Attorney George Brauchler (B-R-A-U…yep, we spelled it right) is "seriously" considering running for Governor in 2014: "It's fair to say that I have been approached by a lot of different credible and influential people in the party about pursuing a run for governor, and I […]

Revealed: What Mark Udall Was Warning You About

UPDATE: Today's statement from Sen. Mark Udall: "The government's collection of millions of Americans' phone records is the type of surveillance I have long said would shock the public if they knew about it. We must strike the right balance between keeping Americans safe and protecting constitutional rights. As the leaders of the Senate Intelligence […]

What to Make of Peter Boyles’ Violent Meltdown?

9NEWS reports in the aftermath of Tom Tancredo's announcement yesterday that he will run for governor in 2014, which took place on the KHOW 630AM talk show hosted by longtime Denver radio personality Peter Boyles: Peter Boyles, a well-known and sometimes-controversial radio host in Denver for 630 KHOW, will be off the air Friday after a […]

What Happens When You Have No Candidate

FOX 31's Eli Stokols: If Colorado Republicans are looking for a fresh face to take on Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper next year, one of them just appeared. Out of nowhere. Well, Rhode Island, really. Steve Laffey, a former mayor and GOP Senate candidate who moved to Colorado just three years ago, has filed papers to […]

Gallup Explains What Went Wrong, Except The Obvious

Politico: After misreading the 2012 presidential election and facing criticism in the aftermath, Gallup polling has undertaken an internal review and will announce the findings next month. “We are in the process of finishing a full review of all methodological issues relating to our 2012 election polling. The process is being led by a blue-ribbon […]

What Surprises Await Before Session’s End?

The first regular legislative session of the 69th Colorado General Assembly ends no later than midnight on Wednesday. Reporters and spin doctors are busily compiling their end-of-session wrapups–but as the Durango Herald's Joe Hanel reports, there's an awful lot left to resolve, and plenty of opportunities for a fresh blowout before sine die: The clock […]

Montana to Attempt a Colorado-style Breach of Public Pension Contracts. Montana Governor: It’s Illegal, but What the Hell.

MONTANA'S GOVERNOR SAYS TAKING THE PUBLIC PENSION COLA BENEFIT IS ILLEGAL, BUT HE'S SIGNING THE BILL ANYWAY. COME AGAIN? MONTANA GOV. BULLOCK: STATE PENSIONERS WILL WIN THEIR LAWSUIT OVER THE COLA TAKING. If Colorado's former Governor Ritter (an attorney) had such views, he wasn't sharing them in 2010.  Many states just want to roll the […]

So, Uh, What’s the Deal with Ken Gordon?

Democrat Ken Gordon is currently the only Democrat registered as a candidate for Secretary of State in 2014, but is he really a candidate? It sure doesn't seem likely. Since filing his paperwork in December, Gordon has done little other than try to raise money for Democrat Andrew Romanoff in his bid for Congress in […]

Reporters Need To Know Who (And What) They’re Talking About

After some six hours of debate that lasted well into the evening yesterday, House Bill 1303, the Voter Access and Modernized Elections Act, passed the Senate State Affairs Committee on a party-line vote. Having passed the House, the bill appears increasingly certain to become law–that is, after Republican legislative opponents and Secretary of State Scott Gessler […]

What’s up with label-loving Coffman joining a “No Labels” group?

(Here’s a label: “Endangered Species” – promoted by Colorado Pols) Rep. Mike Coffman announced last week that he's joining "No Labels’ Problem Solvers — a group of 56 Democrats and Republicans committed to meeting regularly across the aisle to build trust and talk about solving problems." Some labels, like the label of "citizen" for Obama, […]

Poll: What’s the Best Pope Name?

Pope Benedict XVI finished his last day of popeness on Thursday. Since it's a Friday and we all could use a minor distraction from the heavy political issues in the news, we thought it would be a nice time for a poll. Newly-elected popes choose a new formal ("regnal") name immediately after selected. Usually the […]

What would America look like with an immigrant underclass?

Reporting on town a hall meeting in Aurora on Sunday, The Denver Post’s Nic Turiciano did a nice job focusing on what’s emerged as the central issue in the immigration debate: whether to grant a path to citizenship to the 11 million undocumented immigrants already in the United States. Turiciano reported that Rep. Jared Polis […]

Colorado ASSET: What progressives need to know

I just got this email from ProgressNow Colorado. Excellent information: Today, the “Colorado ASSET” bill, which will allowВ allВ qualified Colorado resident high school graduates to attend college at in-state tuition rates, is expected to pass its first test in the Colorado Senate Education Committee. There is a great deal of misinformation being put out about this […]

Boehner’s Debt-Ceiling Capitulation: What Does It Mean?

Our friend Chris Cillizza of the Washington Post reports: Days after President Obama held a press conference re-asserting his refusal to negotiate with Republicans on raising the debt ceiling, House GOP leaders announced Friday they would move to extend the country’s credit limit for another three months… Democrats quickly declared victory, insisting that Obama’s hardline […]

Seven state GOP Senators voted against civility? What’s up with that?

On Tuesday, the Colorado Senate passed a resolution:

That we, the members of the Colorado General Assembly, agree to conduct ourselves at all times in a manner so as to reflect credit on the Colorado General Assembly and its two houses and to inspire the confidence, respect, and trust of the public in the laws, the Colorado General Assembly, and democratic government.

There was more to it, and you can read it here, but you get the idea.

You’d think a “no” vote by seven Republican Senators, including Senate Minority Leader Cadman, would catch the attention of the Capitol press corps.

What’s up with a no vote on a bipartisan civility resolution?
