As ABC News reports, it’s a triumph of loyalty over the rule of law that would have been unthinkable before Donald Trump:
President Donald Trump said Friday evening he has signed a commutation releasing scandal-plagued former congressman George Santos from prison “immediately.”
Santos, 37, was less than three months into serving a seven-year sentence in federal prison after being convicted of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.
The ex-lawmaker was released from prison just before 11 p.m. on Friday night and was picked up by his family, according to a statement from his lawyer, Joe Murray.
George Santos’ sentence to federal prison on fraud charges was just the criminal tip of an iceberg of almost pure fraudulence in Santos’ personal and professional life, which included an “animal rescue” scam, stealing puppies from the Amish, and a fabricated educational and business background that he used to steal money long before he discovered that a sham campaign for Congress could be a real gold mine for the ethically unencumbered.
But since Santos was also reportedly fun at parties, he became fast friends in his brief time in Congress with the far-right back bench of lawmakers that includes Colorado’s own maven of parliamentary mayhem Rep. Lauren Boebert, along with accused kiddie-diddler Matt “Giggity” Gaetz and Boebert frenemy Marjorie Taylor Greene. Santos’ fraud operation masquerading as a congressional campaign had parallels to Boebert’s own campaign follies, as Boebert played fast and loose with her own campaign finances but avoided further trouble by quickly paying back the money she “accidentally” misused on rent for Shooter’s Grill. After Santos was reluctantly expelled from the House by a vote that included over 100 fellow Republicans, Boebert welcomed Santos back to the House gallery on the occasion of Joe Biden’s final State of the Union Address.
When she wasn’t plugging for the release of Tiger King from prison, Boebert was working the administration on Santos’ behalf:

After Friday’s announcement that Santos would walk free on account of his redeeming virtue of total loyalty to Donald Trump, Boebert was ebullient:

The lesson is not that even those who make mistakes deserve a second chance, since Santos’ new lease on life comes as Trump unleashes the full weight of state power upon his political enemies accused of trifling mistakes by comparison. The lesson is that anybody, even a shameless international fraudster who stole from people who trusted him under any number of knowingly false pretenses, can earn themselves a second chance by demonstrating steadfast loyalty to Donald Trump.
Don’t underestimate the power of Trump’s naked appeals to corruption. To millions of similarly dishonest people, Trump offers redemption–for one small price they’ll find easy to pay.
Like Xerxes, Trump requires only that you kneel.
