And…the 2014 Ballot Race is On!

While a 'Civil Unions' bill is expected to make it through the Colorado legislature this year, the first potential ballot measure for 2014 looks to legalize gay marriage. Lynn Bartels of the Denver Post reports on the official wording, which reads: Be it enacted by the voters of the State of Colorado: Article II Section […]

Blistering Audit Hits Colorado Energy Office

Kristen Wyatt of the Associated Press reports, and no denying this doesn't look good: Colorado's embattled energy development office is plagued by misspending, sloppy accounting and high turnover, according to a blistering state audit released Tuesday. The review blasted the Colorado Energy Office for a number of issues, including not keeping track of travel expenses […]

Highly Misguided “More Guns In Schools” Bill Dies

The Durango Herald's Joe Hanel reports on the death yesterday of GOP-sponsored Senate Bill 9, the so-called "more guns in schools" bill: It was the first Republican attempt to respond to mass shootings in Aurora and an elementary school in Connecticut, and the first of many rounds of fights over gun control this year. Monday’s […]

Another (not yet announced) Candidate for CD6

Late last night, Kate Newell, daughter of recently re-elected Senator Linda Newell, posted this to her facebook page: Kate Newell 9 hours ago near Denver So proud of my mama, who (after being asked too many times to count) has decided to seriously consider running for/serving as Congresswoman for CD 6! Excited to see where this faithwalk […]

Bennet Plays Key Role In Latest Immigration Proposal

UPDATE: Statement from Colorado Democratic Party chairman Rick Palacio: With this afternoon’s announcement from eight U.S. Senators, including Colorado’s own Michael Bennet, of a bipartisan framework for comprehensive immigration reform, a solution to this problem is a real possibility. That a Colorado voice, especially that of Senator Bennet, is helping to drive this discussion is […]

Oil and Gas Lobbyist Commits Termination Offense

A late Friday story that's sure to be the talk of the political class this weekend–forwarded to us earlier this afternoon, here's a memo that was accidentally sent to every member of the Colorado General Assembly yesterday. From the lobbyist outfit Colorado Legislative Services, LLC, the attachment to the email is supposed to be a […]

Middleton v. Romanoff in CD-6

It looks like we’ve got our first Primary matchup of the 2014 election cycle. We’ve had both Andrew Romanoff and Karen Middleton on the CD-6 Line for more than a week now, but we’ve gone from “potential primary” to “probable primary” based on what we’ve been hearing in the last day or two. It’s far […]

Do Tell, Haley Barbour

Politico reports on what Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction would have described as "a moment of clarity." “Shining Stars” and Prefab ALEC Bills

Although most of the attention yesterday at the Colorado Capitol was focused on the Senate Judiciary Committee and the debate and passage there of the Colorado Civil Unions Act, other action included the death of a bill in the Senate Business, Labor, and Technology Committee we had noted earlier this month—Senate Bill 13-024, this year’s […]

Boehner: Obama Seeks GOP’s “Annihilation”

Politico–tough to consider this a constructive attitude: President Barack Obama is aiming to “annihilate” the GOP during the president’s second term, House Speaker John Boehner says. “And given what we heard yesterday about the President’s vision for his second term, it’s pretty clear to me that he knows he can’t do any of that as […]

Rep. Jerry Sonnenberg Means Well, But Still Giving Handouts to Animal Abusers

Remember the bill that brought me to this blog? It was a convoluted, confused mess of a giveaway to animal abusers, legislation written so poorly that clear beneficiaries like the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association testified against it because it was so hard to understand, and wound up dying in committee with only its sponsor’s vote in […]

Large Crowd For “March For Life Denver”

UPDATE: A big crowd for today’s anti-abortion protest, but as we can now shamelessly exploit for traffic rankings, not entirely unopposed: Folks, as a political blog, we don’t often get to post photos like this. County Sheriffs Throw Highly Embarrassing Gun Nut Tantrum

AP reports via the Durango Herald: Larimer County Sheriff Justin Smith backed off his hard-line stance against gun-law enforcement Thursday after he said he would refuse to enforce unconstitutional laws, including gun laws. Civil Unions “Revenge Tour” Begins Next Week

As announced in an email from LGBT advocacy organization One Colorado today:

The Colorado Civil Union Act has been scheduled for its first hearing — Wednesday, January 23, at 1:30 p.m. in the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Civil unions is a critical piece of legislation for our community. If passed, it will provide committed same-sex couples in the state with the protections they need to take care of their families.

We have a lot of support for the bill in the Senate Judiciary Committee — thanks to your incredible work during the election. But you can be sure that opponents of equality will flood the Capitol before Wednesday’s vote…

Passage of civil unions was assured, of course, after the extraordinary actions of the GOP House majority last year to kill the bill became a central 2012 campaign issue, and Democrats retook control of the House in the November general elections by a strong majority.

Fait accompli or no, it’s a popular question today at the Capitol whether “Anus Granny” will make another appearance Wednesday.
