What you can do to fight back this week (August 28)

Even in the midst of political turmoil, external events sometimes force us to turn our focus to helping fellow Americans in need. This weekend, Hurricane Harvey struck the Gulf Coast of Texas, causing massive damage and flooding affecting millions of people.

No matter what our political or cultural differences may be, we are all Americans, and we come together to help each other when disaster strikes. Colorado learned this lesson just a few years ago when devastating floods struck our state. Even though some in Colorado had previously voted against disaster relief for hurricane victims on the East Coast, aid from across the nation flowed into our state to help us recover.

The top action item this week is to make a donation to help victims of Hurricane Harvey. Donating to help with hurricane relief couldn’t be easier: visit redcross.org, call 1-800-RED-CROSS or simply text HARVEY to 90999 to make an instant $10 donation.

Once that’s done, the fight to hold Trump and the far right accountable continues with numerous important action alerts and great events! Here are more ways to take action for the week of August 28th:

FINAL VOTE: Denver Immigrant Protection Policy

Join immigrant rights groups at the final hearing and vote for the Public Safety Enforcement Priority Act. Please WEAR WHITE in solidarity with the immigrant community. There’s a need for a policy that draws a bright line in the sand between local law enforcement and immigration enforcement and that protects immigrants and we need to show city leaders that Denver stands in support of this effort to disentangle ICE from our city.

Town Hall With Senator Cory Gardner (Invited)

Learn how to register folks to vote. Then join some voter registration drives we’ll be setting up. Tyler McDermott will be doing the training. Limit 30. Refreshments. The room is on the lower floor of Bemis Library.

Harm Reduction Action Center Overdose Awareness Day Die-In

The Harm Reduction Action Center will be celebrating Overdose Awareness Day with an action-packed event. We will meet at HRAC (231 E. Colfax Ave) at 4:30 on Thursday, August 31. Once assembled, we will march to a local park to participate in a die-in, to provide a visual impact of those we lost, and continue to lose, to overdoses in our community. We will be all done by 6:00. Folks should bring their own signs. If folks haven’t already, they are welcome to bring a 5×7 picture of their loved one that passed away due to overdose and we will add them to our overdose memorial wall in our agency.

Indivisible and Activist Town Hall with Rep. Diana DeGette

Please join us for an intimate conversation with Chief Deputy Whip and Colorado’s District 1 Representative, Diana DeGette. She is also hoping to help navigate the many nuances of our federal government as we enter budget negotiations.

Network Literacy for Femmes

As a decentralized, global network of interlinked computing devices, the Internet has revolutionized the way we communicate, teach, learn, entertain, organize, conduct research, publish, transact, and promote. Citizenship in the Internet era, as well as full participation in 21st-century economic, social, and political life, demands new forms of literacy. Often the spaces and institutions which teach technical skills and concepts are dripping with toxic masculinity. Our goal is to give an overview of how the internet works in a safe, femme-exclusive environment where we can learn to the best of our abilities, without feeling like we are invading a culture hostile to us. The internet belongs to everyone!
