Tough Times Make For Good Bids

No $1,000 toilet seats with federal stimulus dollars here, as the AP reports:

Hungry highway contractors have underbid CDOT’s cost estimates on the first five federally funded stimulus-program projects by nearly 10 percent, saving the state $1.43 million that it can put toward other projects.

Contractors have been telling officials they can expect highly competitive bids on the stimulus-funded projects, which have provided a flood of money into an industry that has been hurting for work this season.

The Colorado Department of Transportation announced the apparent low bidders on five projects last week. Internal estimates on their construction cost totaled nearly $15 million. The total of the low bids came to just more than $13.5 million.

“If this trend continues, we may be able to accumulate enough funding to add more construction projects to our list,” CDOT Director Russ George said.

    1. However, that question obviously does not feed the NONVERSATION that is occurring here.

But hey, it is all on par with things like:

… ahhhh … “I voted for it, before I voted against it.”

and still my favorite… “Speaking from my own religious tradition in this Christmas season, 2,000 years ago a homeless woman gave birth to a homeless child in a manger because the inn was full.”

      — psssst, the Prophets parents Mary and Joseph weren’t homeless, they were on a government mandated journey to take the census and increase their tax burden.

      1. .

and I sure don’t know about heavy and horizontal (highway) construction,

but in vertical construction at the federal level, politics plays as big a role as actual cost experience in putting together estimates and requesting appropriated funds.

        .

        1. Like anything, a little padding as you can become a hero bringing in deals under budget, time.

Didn’t SE Constructors get a billion $ bonus on TReX?

      2. “Hi, honey!  You need to load your 8.9 month pregnant ass onto this here ass to ride it fifty miles to Bethlehem.  Herod says so.”

Imagine a whole nation churning around to meet the alleged requirement of returning to the birth or family city.  What about the innkeeper?  Might he not have come from Galilee? So off he goes.

It was created so that the messiah would be born in the City of King David. There is no historical record of Herod requiring a census then other than the usual, you know, just count them.  “And where were you born?  Bethlehem?  Fine.”  Saved a lot of ass riding.

          1. And theological student and degree holder.

Sorry if facts and logic get in the way of your mythology.

It’s a nice story, as so many myths are.  The irony of this and the other myths that were created to prove the divinity of Jesus aren’t necessary.

His teachings stand on their own quite well, thank you.
