Former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters may be out of jail after her nine-year sentence was commuted last month by Gov. Jared Polis, but as the Colorado Sun’s Olivia Prentzel reports, as a convicted felon on parole Peters is not exactly what you’d call at liberty. Peters must abstain from drugs and alcohol, get a job, and get permission to travel:
Tina Peters, the former Mesa County clerk convicted of orchestrating a security breach of her county’s election system, was released Monday morning from a state prison, Colorado corrections officials said…conditions of her parole, obtained by The Colorado Sun through a records request, show that Peters must seek her parole officer’s permission before leaving the state.
The conditions don’t state what type of travel might be permitted and it’s not known if Peters could make short trips for campaign purposes or to visit President Donald Trump. Many supporters on social media have called for Peters to be feted by the president in Washington or at his home in Mar-a-Lago, Florida.
Peters may have some hoops to jump through before she’s allowed back to Mar-a-Lago for her fully expected hero’s welcome, but as the Grand Junction Sentinel reports, Peters will make her first public appearance since her release from prison later this month at a political conference organized by 2022 gubernatorial loser Heidi Ganahl:
Former Mesa County Clerk and convicted felon Tina Peters is scheduled to speak at the Rocky Mountain Voice’s “Freedom Fest,” to be held June 26 and 27, less than a month after being released from prison.
Other speakers at the event include U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Chris Wright and reality television star Duane “Dog the Bounty Hunter” Chapman.
In normal times a Cabinet-level official might object to co-starring with a recently-released convicted felon, but you can imagine the reaction from the White House if Energy Secretary Chris Wright were to complain about being upstaged by Tina Peters. After losing the 2022 race for governor by a nearly 20-point margin, Heidi Ganahl has actively embraced the election conspiracy theorizing that dogged her run, in particular after her selection of an avowed election denier running mate. That was all a matter of public record before Tina Peters’ speaking slot was announced, and Wright didn’t have a problem with it.
And so the election denial comeback tour that everyone warned Gov. Polis would take place the moment Peters was free will begin right here in Douglas County. Rest assured, she’ll make her way to Mar-a-Lago eventually. Donald Trump needs her for November.
