How About That Trump Meet The Press Crash Out?

This weekend, NBC News’ Meet The Press hosted President Donald Trump for an interview that to say did not go well is an epic understatement. As the Washington Post reports:

President Donald Trump broke off an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” that aired Sunday after host Kristen Welker challenged his false claims about elections and the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol.

Before storming off the set in a fit of sexist pique directed at reporter Kristen Welker, Trump made a liar of his personal attorney masquerading as Attorney General Todd Blanche, who insisted just last week that he didn’t need to put the freeze of Trump’s $1.8 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund” in writing, because how dare you not trust the President’s word:

Trump appeared to become agitated when Welker asked him about the $1.8 billion fund he has sought to pay people claiming they were victims of politicized prosecutions. The Justice Department agreed to set up the fund to settle the president’s lawsuit against the IRS, but officials backed off amid court challenges and pushback from Republican senators.

The president said on “Meet the Press” that he still wanted to establish the fund…

But the question that sparked Trump’s walk-out of the interview was being asked to provide evidence to support his ongoing false claims of election fraud, most recently in the California primaries last Tuesday:

Trump then alleged that the 2020 presidential election and last week’s California primary were “rigged.” Welker said there was no evidence to support those claims, either…

“All I have to do is look,” Trump said.

“But that’s not evidence,” Welker said.

Trump then turned to attacking NBC and other networks before unclipping his microphone, standing up and walking away.

It’s not news that Trump has no facts to back up his insistence that elections in America have been rigged ever since he lost one in 2020–which doesn’t account for how Trump won in 2024, but if you’ve processed the theory that far you’ve already done better than Trump. That the 2020 election was somehow rigged against Trump is an article of faith that everyone loyal to him must attest to despite no evidence ever having emerged to support his contentions. There is no one in regular contact with Trump who dares challenge his fake version of history, which amplifies the shock when Trump is confronted with reality by someone he doesn’t control.

This is the result: when a reporter won’t accept his lies and won’t simply let them slide, Trump flips out. And then he storms out. Trump is totally incapable of defending the version of history he demands the nation accept. Much like Trump’s incoherent recounting of the story of Tina Peters, it’s such an embarrassing exposure of Trump’s fundamental cluelessness that even his most ardent supporters like Rep. Gabe Evans can’t defend it. They can only change the subject.

Once again, what would end any other presidency is just another sit-down for Donald Trump.
