Former State Senator, tamale maker, and Denver political icon Paul Sandoval passed away peacefully this afternoon — just days before he was to be honored with a lifetime achievement award from the Hispanic Chamber of Congress of Metro Denver — after a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer.
We imagine tributes will be rolling in from political and civic leaders from across the state and country over the next few hours and days. We’ll post them as we receive them.

UPDATE: Statement from Denver Mayor Michael Hancock after the jump.
DENVER – Mayor Michael B. Hancock today issued the following statement on the passing of Paul Sandoval, former Colorado State Senator, Denver community leader and Colorado political legend:
“It is with profound sadness that we mourn the loss of one of Denver’s greatest sons. For over 50 years, Paul stood as a giant among leaders in both City Hall and under the gold dome of the state Capitol. He also offered so much more to his family and friends. He was a father, a brother and a mentor. He was a man I could always turn to for advice no matter the situation, a man that I’m honored to call my friend.
“Now is the time to celebrate the life of Paul Sandoval – a champion and a voice for so many of Denver’s most vulnerable residents. He worked tirelessly throughout his career to stand in the gap and eliminate inequalities for students of color. As a shining star of Denver’s business community, he turned tamales into a metaphor for business savvy and humble success.
“The State of Colorado is better because he served it with strength and dignity. The City of Denver is stronger because he fought to make it a city for everyone. Paul will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Paula, daughters Kendra, Cris, Andrea, Amanda and son Brett during this difficult time.”
