Marco Rubio, You Are NOT the Next Contestant on the VP Sweeps

  • by: Colorado Pols

As our friends at “The Fix” report, Sarah Palin probably ruined Florida Sen. Marco Rubio’s chances at becoming Mitt Romney’s running mate:

The news that Florida Sen. Marco Rubio isn’t being seriously vetted by Mitt Romney’s vice presidential selection team is both surprising and enlightening.

Surprising because many people – the Fix included – had touted him early and often as a potential frontrunner to be Romney’s number two. (Heck, we compared him to Lionel Messi!)

Enlightening because it provides us a window into the sort of person that Romney (and Beth Myers, his head of vice presidential vetting) are looking for in a running mate.

That person? Someone whose credentials and readiness are beyond question. And, more than likely, someone who calls to mind “plain” more than “pizzazz”.

Rubio – as well as New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez and New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte who, according to the Post’s Phil Rucker, are also not being seriously vetted – are relative newcomers on the national political scene with relatively thin resumes to date.

Romney’s decision not to consider the Rubios, Martinezes and Ayottes of the world suggest that the campaign is very aware of what we would call the “Palin factor”.

  1. …someone that can calm the base, and dazzle the morons in the Tea Party into thinking about the “Good Old Days.”

Just because Liddy Dole is four days older than dirt doesn’t mean she can’t be propped up as the VP for the campaign….look how long Darth Cheney was propped up!

      1. There’s a difference between “vetted” and “seriously vetted.” Lots of people have probably been, or will be, “vetted” initially.

  2. My relatives in Louisiana are telling me that Gov. Jindal is bragging that he will Romney’s running mate.  It makes sense. Romney can’t have his VP who can upstage him.

    1. Not that Jindahl has an upstaging presence, but that the Rmoneyiacs will select him — because Jihdahl will, without a doubt, draw more press and attention than Rmoney’s money.  Willard certainly doesn’t need that.

Besides Louisiana and New Orleans in particular are proof of the need for, and importance of, federal governance and spending, . . . and RMoney really doesn’t need that!

    2. there’s still a helluva lot of daylight between now and the GOP stampede in Tampa so I’m a little suspect of this tip.

Honestly, Bobby is just the exact kinda guy bully Mitt would have clipped & wedgied back in his school days.  Jindahl has the acceptable immigrants backstory (similar to SC Gov) and there’s no way his Barney Fife/doe-on-the-headlights look could ever upstage Mittens slick coif.

But what about the birthers, the Johnny Rebs, and the TeaBaggers?  That whole bunch of con-stit-ients know fer damn sure what’s black and what’s white and lil’ old Bobby would get things a bit confused.  It wouldn’t take them long at all to figure out lil’ Bobby would be but a heartbeat away — could they accept that as POTUS?

      1. Richard Nixon would come out; only he would be an investment banker that had recently been posthumously baptized and pink slipped.  Watch out – he’s pretty pissed off !

  3. He isn’t being considered because Romney and his group have learned something fro McCain, get someone with more experience. Rubio just played Romney like a violin to get Romney to say he IS being vetted so Romney doesn’t get negative attention from some of his more-nutty contributors. Rubio doesn’t even care if Romney loses, if Rubio is on a losing ticket he thinks he’ll be a frontrunner in ’16. He won’t. In ’16 it will be all Jeb. The GOP will be so sick about being out of power they’ll revert to form and go with a Bush.
