As our friends at “The Fix” explain, we have our general election matchup for President:
For the umpteenth time in the Republican presidential primary race, Mitt Romney defeated Rick Santorum in a major Midwestern swing state – a win that effectively forecloses any chance that the former Massachusetts governor might not be the GOP nominee in the fall.
Romney’s victory in Wisconsin was consistent with the polling conducted in the runup to the vote. He was also buoyed by easy victories in the lower-profile primaries held in Maryland and the District of Columbia.
Santorum’s camp claimed earlier Tuesday that the Wisconsin result mattered little to their calculus, insisting that the former Pennsylvania senator would remain in the race at least until his home state votes on April 24…
…Santorum, of course, can stay in the race as long as he likes. But, his large delegate deficit coupled with defeats in big – and symbolically important – states like Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and Wisconsin mean the political oxygen is out of the room for Santorum.
With Romney having finally become inevitable after 18 months as the “inevitable” candidate, the General Election is officially underway.

if Newt wants to keep whining and Santorum wants to play real conservative candidate as if it’s still primary time. The public will get to know Romney even better as his rivals helpfully draw attention to his every flaw, gaffe and flip flop and, as the latest swing state polls show, the more the people, especially women, in these crucial states know about Mittens, the less they like him.
This was a tough primary. I’m glad Romney has had this vetting.
In a matter of weeks, the primary will be a memory and we’ll all know why Democrats tried to keep it going. Because it was one of the only distractions from this failed presidency Democrats will get this year.
And it’s over now. Bring the next stage on!
Pro life Romney, probably fully vetted. Pro choice Romney, nah, not just yet. Universal healthcare Romney, not so much either. On the other side of the coin, job killer Romney, also fully vetted.
Let Panderfest ’12 begin. Forget yesterday, listen to what I’m telling you today !

I’m happy to let the GOP Clowncar drive around the US a little bit more, but if reality ever sets in and it finally comes down to my President and Romnybot 1 (or 2,) I know who’s going to win….
Predicting a Rmoney victory has always been as daring as predicting sunrise in the morning. True, the depth of antipathy for the man among Republicans was a surprise, but the party elite always gets what it wants.
You would deserve it if there was ever any doubt. But only a few diehard blowhards ever believed anyone could overcome that.
to shake the Etch-a-sketch!
What a joke.
Let’s recall Herman Cain, Donald Trump, Rick Perry, Michelle Bachmann, Newt Gingrich, and Rick “Pewk” Santorum.
There has never been a weaker field of presidential candidates.
And, Switch-Hit Mitt comes out of that pathetic bunch severely weakened with approval ratings in the toilet.
What a joke.
Comes out a little battered. So did Obama after Hillary. Give this a few months, give Romney’s former opponents a chance to make it right. You’ll see Santorum and Gingrich on the trail before you know it, and we won’t be talking about how much they didn’t like Romney.
We’ll be talking about all three are unified against Obama.
I responded to your portrayal of a “tough primary” for Romney. If you knew how to read, you’d realize that I pointed out that Romney faced the weakest presidential primary field in history.
It’s difficult dealing with conservatives these days because they are so stupid.
I think you need a little more home schoolin’.
Not the best election catch phrase.
With your double entendres.
for a Romney (Social Darwinist) candidacy.
While Romney’s flip-flops over the past decade provide a target-rich environment, his track record as a Vulture Capitalist at Bain Capital should be fully examined as well.
Raiding corporate coffers to fund their takeovers, and their 9-figure payouts… Just how many people lost their jobs as a result? That’ll be an interesting story to tell.
JFK wore the mantle of wealth and privilege with ease, accurately projecting the image that public service was his calling.
Romney just comes off as another money-hungry executive, seeking to climb the next rung of power, not to server the public good, but just to complete his resume.
Maybe that’s why he comes off as an empty suit with few bedrock principles.
Republicans should just relax and enjoy it.
nice catch!
