PTI: LGBT Training October 19-22

Deadline for this is the 30th of the month.  Pass along to anyone who you may think will fit the bill.

https://ptiapplication.wufoo.c…

For decades, conservatives have ruled the airwaves, using well-funded platforms such as Fox News and an army of conservative talking heads to dominate the media landscape and perpetrate falsehoods on a variety of issues. Progressives simply cannot afford to yield the advantage of professional pundit training to conservatives any longer, especially around critical issues. That is why in 2009 Media Matters launched the Progressive Talent Initiative (PTI). PTI has two essential, interlocking components: messaging and practical media skills training. The program provides participants with the latest, most sophisticated research on effective messages, and devotes multiple days to tactical nuts-and-bolts media training from top experts in the field.

Media Matters for America will host its next PTI media training for LGBT activists October 19-22, 2011 in Washington, DC. This training is specifically aimed at new and diverse voices who are able to speak on a variety of LGBT issues. PTI takes a hands-on approach as participants will spend time on camera practicing the skills they are taught including messaging, technique, tactics, style and hot button issues such as marriage equality, employment discrimination, LGBT policy, etc.

This training will be held from the morning of Wednesday, October 19 through the early afternoon of Saturday, October 22, 2011 in Washington, DC. Previous TV appearances are not a requirement but participants should be able to speak intelligently on current issues and have a strong on-camera presence.

Participants are expected to fully engage in the training. While breaks will be provided throughout the training, participants should not plan on being available for work or other personal commitments for the duration of the program.

All costs for the training including materials and meals during the training plus all travel and hotel costs for participants coming from outside of the DC area will be paid for by Media Matters.

This application provides a space to include at least one but no more than three URLs to provide a video clip of you on TV. If you do not have a TV clip, please create a video for review answering the following question in no more than 90 seconds:

– What do you think is the biggest challenge facing LGBT activists?

In the video, please present yourself as you would if you were being interviewed on TV, taking into consideration how you would dress and sit for an on camera appearance. The quality of the video will not be considered (iPhone/BlackBerry video quality is perfectly acceptable), the review team is more interested in seeing and hearing you on camera.

Please use this application as an avenue to showcase your talents and why you feel you should be selected to participate in the program. Please note in the application if you were referred by a specific organization or individual.

Applications will be reviewed by a committee comprised of experts in the field and PTI team members. All decisions are at the discretion of the review committee and details regarding why an applicant was or was not chosen will not be disclosed. Please be advised that during the review process the PTI team may contact you for additional information. We can respond only to candidates whom we are selecting for the program.

We thank you in advance for your interest in the Progressive Talent Initiative media training and look forward to receiving your application. Additional questions can be directed to Matt White at PTI@mediamatters.org.
