I was saddened to learn of the passing of my friend Councilwoman Carla Madison. Every time Carla walked into a room her infectious smile, brilliant personality and red hair would light up the room.
Councilwoman Madison, who represented Denver’s 8th District that includes Park Hill, Five Points and the 16th Street Mall, passed away after a two-year battle with cancer.
The citizens in the 8th District and all of Denver have lost a great leader. Carla worked tirelessly to help her District reach its full potential even while she was battling cancer. I came to know Carla through her husband Paul, who I worked with on the City Park Arts Festival. My heartfelt condolences go out to Paul and all of Carla’s family. She will be truly missed.

I think it’s interesting that two political women have died this week due to long battles with breast cancer (Jan McKinley being the other). With all the attention and improved odds, it’s easy to forget that it’s not just an excuse to wear pink.
