What you can do to fight for progress this week (November 30)

I hope you had a restful Thanksgiving holiday at home with your household, and were able to connect virtually with family and friends. Today, the Colorado General Assembly is convening a special session to address what Republicans in Washington are still refusing to: economic relief for people suffering during the COVID-19 pandemic. [1]

We’ve been waiting since the spring for another relief package from Washington, and while Mitch McConnell—and for another few weeks, ousted Sen. Cory Gardner of Colorado—refuse to take action, Colorado’s progressive majority and Gov. Jared Polis are tired of waiting.

It’s not a substitute for action at the federal level. But by doing what we can to provide quicker relief for small businesses, renters, and working families who need child care, our leaders in Colorado are working to get help to the people who need it most. I’m hopeful that in contrast to past sessions of the 2019-20 legislature, we’ll see more accomplishments and less partisan antics. That’s what the people of Colorado have said in two consecutive elections now that they want.

Priority #1 this week: our friends at the Colorado Health Institute are working on an important study for the Colorado Division of Insurance. Did you receive financial assistance to purchase coverage through the Connect for Health Colorado insurance marketplace? If so, your feedback is needed this week. Click here to sign up to participate in a focus group discussion on health insurance affordability.

And here are a few more ways to make a difference for the week of November 30:

Institute for Science & Policy 2020 Symposium: Untangling Complexity in Our Changing World

Registration for the 2020 Institute for Science & Policy Symposium is now open. This year’s all-virtual event, held across two half-days, will explore the theme of untangling complexity in our changing world. What have we learned about the role of trust, biases, and inequities in our institutions? How should we approach scientific decision-making on complex issues like climate change as we look ahead?

When: December 1-3

Chinook Fund: Giving Project Information Session

Join us for a digital Information Session to learn how you can activate your values for social change and build your skills in fundraising, grantmaking, and community building. Find out how you can deepen your volunteering and giving to better serve our collective good. Chinook Fund is seeking 25 diverse members for our Fall 2020 Online Giving Project. Over the course of six months, members will learn about race, class, and power in society, fundraise, and grant money to grassroots social justice organizations across the state. You will learn about social justice philanthropy while taking meaningful action. No prior experience is necessary—just a passion for change!

When: Tuesday, December 1 at 12:00pm

Health Equity Advocacy Summit Series

The Health Equity Advocacy Summit Series is a four-month series of interactive training, discussions and presentations with national and Colorado-based leaders. The summits will provide opportunities for you to engage with other community members to advance policy, change the narrative and promote healing toward action. The speakers and topics in this series are being overseen by the members of the Health Equity Advocacy (HEA) Cohort.

When: Tuesday, December 1 at 12:00pm

Colorado Sierra Club: Advocacy Workshop Series: Recruiting a team and having a 1:1

Join us for our third part of our Advocacy Workshop Series and hear from Colorado Sierra Club’s Lead Organizer, Sarah Clark on best practices to get folks interested in your campaign! During this session, you’ll strengthen your movement-building skills by learning how to effectively have a “one on one” conversation with interested volunteers, tactics, and best practices for recruiting a team and setting goals for success.

When: Thursday, December 3 at 5:30pm

We’ll see you next week with more ways to fight back for our shared progressive values. Thanks again.
