  1. From Barbara at Mahablog: "Trump’s Bible Stunt and Its Larger Implications"

This is a good article with lots of interesting points. She says that the first rule of Catholicism is "Don't piss off the nuns."

McCay Coppins wrote, “To Trump, the Bible and the church are not symbols of faith; they are weapons of culture war.” Yes, and they are increasingly symbols of his political power. And, as we’ve seen, many Trump supporters also employ symbols of the Third Reich and the Confederacy, which also stand for white supremacy. Because it’s all linked together in that culture war.

At this point the “Christianity” that supports Trump is utterly incompatible with Jesus’ teaching and is little more than a front for white supremacy and a grab bag of other right-wing causes, such as the subjugation of women and discrimination against LBGTQ people. Yet many Christian clergy who oppose the white evangelicals have been reluctant to call them out for their obvious apostasy. That may change now. The fallout from Trump’s Bible stunt is still developing; many Christian clergy are outraged by it. Trump may have overplayed his hand.

    1. Trump's authoritarian instincts are causing much worry

Mr. Trump’s invocation of religion in the context of law enforcement muscle struck several scholars as especially notable.

Katherine Stewart, an author who has focused often on the Christian right, said that the church visit on Monday called to mind political leaders like Prime Minister Viktor Orban of Hungary and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey.

“Trump doesn’t quote anything from the Bible. He really just uses it as a pure symbol of partisan identity,” she said, adding: “Authoritarianism frequently comes veiled in religion.”

    1. Bye Felicia.

He has tied immigrant children to being drug mules, questioned whether minorities have contributed anything valuable to western civilization and displayed a Confederate flag on his desk. He has wondered why it is offensive to be called a white nationalist. He has also associated with far-right figures including the Dutch politician Geert Wilders, and once argued to a far-right Austrian publication that elites were trying to reduce the white population and increase minorities.

      1. Oh, somewhere in this favoured land the sun is shining bright,
        The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light;
And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout,
But there is no joy in Tancredoville — . . .

    1. Until Bush 43 and Cheney acknowledge the secret energy task force and resulting oil wars hiring paid camp followers contractors like Erick Prince killed American soldiers, sailors and airman – they remain suspect and untrustworthy.

      1. It doesn’t seem to me to be that much of a stretch from lying the country into a destructive war against a foreign civilian population for purely political gain, to lying the country into a destructive war against the citizens of this country for purely political gain?

  2. Kam Buckner, a 35-year-old attorney and state senator from Illinois was shopping at his local hardware store in Chicago’s South Loop while wearing a face mask, as mandated by an executive order in Illinois. While many white customers streamed by wearing masks, a uniformed officer stopped Buckner as he was leaving the store with a cart, asking to see his receipt and ID.

            1. Have you lived in America very long?

That is exactly what it warrants. I mean, if he had skittles and a hoodie.

Or was driving a really nice car.

Or was watching tv, eating ice cream in his apartment.

              If he was registering voters.

If he was going to work.

              I could go on.

                1. [Hint: that’s his point]

                  Let me help . . .

Nothing you've conjured up is should ever be treated as a crime.

. . . perhaps something on which all will should agree?

  3. Boy, this brazen act of disloyalty won’t go over well with Dear Leader:

Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper said Wednesday that he does not support the use of active-duty military forces in quelling countrywide unrest — a statement that puts him at odds with President Trump, who has threatened to send troops into U.S. cities.

Esper’s announcement comes after a week of increasingly violent unrest gave way to largely peaceful protest Tuesday evening. Brutal clashes between police and the public seemed to subside, and there were only sporadic reports of looting and other mayhem across the nation.

Perhaps a sign that some in the Trump administration realize they are all short-timers, and need to start repairing their reputations, starting now?

    1. Was he confirmed or is he acting?

Either way, if there is another campaign contributor contractor (not named Prince) ready to step in: Friday.

      1. Like most of Trump's cabinet, I think he's just pretending.  The 'Mooch is probably tanned, rested and ready for a short-term job opening to be.

  4. Here is a pretty comprehensive review of all of Trump's sins:

President Trump wants us to believe anarchists are responsible for our nation’s sorry state.

But let’s be clear. The leading cause of the chaos sweeping the streets of the United States is Trump. What has happened to our nation over both the past nearly 3½ years and the past week is exactly what we should expect to happen when the person in charge has no stated beliefs other than his self-interest, and little agenda other than tearing down the accomplishments of others.

Trump possesses no sense of the gravity of the office he holds, no belief in its greater purpose. He has looted our government of its ability to perform its functions, destroying agencies from the inside out. He has firedforced out and humiliated government officials, bureaucrats and politicians who have attempted to hold him accountable for his violations of law and constitutional norms.

The piece is titled, appropriately enough: Donald Trump is the real anarchist
