Another Romanoff Shill On the Board: Kaplan Behind Slanted NYT Story

  • by: glasscup

I’ve been pretty adamant that come November, Andrea Merida needs to be recalled. Looks like she might not be the only one.

A story that just popped up from the Paper Of Record shows that Jeannie Kaplan, who has held a number of fundraisers for Andrew Romanoff and has contributed the maximum amount to his campaign, has been engaged in the same sort of dirty tricks.

According to the Paper,

High-profile Romanoff backer Jeanne Kaplan, a board member, acknowledged that she had pushed the story to the New York Times. She is quoted in the piece, but not identified as a Romanoff supporter.

Yes, there have been “questions raised” and “concerns voiced” about the transaction, but none of them seem to be rooted in any…particular…you know….reality? Listen to the stuff she’s been saying. I just saw her on tv and all she had were “concerns”. It’s purely political nonsense, and it’s disappointing that a district as much in need of help as Denver is stuck with someone like her in a position of authority. Here, we call it concern trolling. In her role, I’d call it “failing the children of Denver.”

The reality here is that Jeannie Kaplan and Andrea Merida and Andrew Romanoff are so desperate to win that they will say or do anything, including lie about a decent man, and play politics with Denver’s kids.

Absolutely sickening. They don’t deserve to be in these roles.

  1. it’s all a conspiracy.

The New York Times reporter who is a Pulitzer prize investigative reporter, Andrea Merida,  Jeanne Kaplan and all of the other people who want an investigation into the swap are all out to get Michael Bennet.

    Well, they got their wish.

Rep. Mark Ferrandino is going to call for a bi-partisan investigation in both the State House and Senate into the DPS investment swap.

He made that statement today on Mario-Solis Marich show.

but I am sure you will say that a former budget official in the White House is making up this just to unfairly target Bennet.

    1. It should be thorough, independent and expert.

It shouldn’t be limited DPS, it should evaluate all school districts and other publicly funded entities in the state.

      But start with DPS.

      1. …that the school board approved it then the investigation will be over and will have been proven to be another waste of time and effort.

          1. Less than if they hadn’t done it.

In other words, the district saved money. And Kaplan is too busy wasting time with these political games to deal in reality and work for Denver’s kids.

      2. We have a right to know why he gambled with taxpayer money and did the banks contribute to his campaign because they were awarded such a sweet deal for them and a lousy deal for the students, taxpayers and teachers of Denver.

  2. 1.) Derivative financial products are what took down our country and continue to take our country down,

2.) Are now going to be highly regulated,

3.) Add no value to our society, and

4.) They enrich a few wealthy bankers that don’t deserve to be enriched and that didn’t earn their money.

It was just a matter of time before the Republicans got this story and ran with it. The NYT did us a favor by publishing it. I only wish it had come out a few days earlier but I think they had a strategy in mind and were hoping for maximum impact. I’m glad if that is the case.

      1. that the Washington Post, Denver Post, CNN, MSNBC, New York Times and Rep. Ferrandino are all in on one giant conspiracy for Andrew Romanoff?

Do you really think he could make all of this happen?

        1. Read slowly. What I am saying is that Sharon said “but I think they had a strategy in mind and were hoping for maximum impact. I’m glad if that is the case.” Referring to the NYT.

          1. You know the above the fold NYT article written by a Pulitzer Price winning journalist. I’m not talking about a conspiracy; it’s just great reporting and the timing IMO would have been better if it happened a few days before. But it’s still going to have an impact. I was just curious if they had a strategy in releasing it when they did vs. a week ago or a few days before they did.

That’s all.  But let me take this opportunity to remind you that Bennet is now unelectable.  The Republicans will have a field day with this and his voting record.  We’re going to lose the seat if he wins the primary but I don’t think that will happen.  Romanoff is going to pull it off IMO.

            1. we Democrats make them unelectable. It’s such complete bullshit and the usual rhetoric from both sides to throw that out there.

After tomorrow it’s up to Democrats to hold the seat. The question is will Romanoff and his followers finally swallow their pride and get behind Bennet to beat the Republicans?

    1. What a sad life you must lead.

If Bennet wins on Tuesday night, you should feel it perfectly acceptable to do a little jig of joy. No one will point and laugh I swear it.

  4. and by full I mean the entire corrupt school board. They seem to be very busy playing politics when they should be too busy figuring out how to get our kids better educated. I wanna know why one board member was on Romanoff’s payroll and never disclosed it. I wanna know why another board member is giving quotes for a NYT story (and possibly was the catalyst for the story) and didn’t mention she was a major contributor to Romanoff’s campaign. I also want to know why yet another board member was working for Bennet’s campaign even if it was disclosed. Does it really surprise anyone that DPS is in trouble?

Just because the reporter has a Pulitzer Prize does not make her infallible. It is ridiculous to keep using this fact as an argument. She didn’t win her Pulitzer for this article so it’s immaterial. The Pulitzer is awarded for very specific pieces on very specific subjects in specific categories that the author submits along with paying a fee. Winning a Pulitzer is a great honor but it does not, in any way, give you a free pass on criticism. Gretchen won her Prize 8 years ago. I’m sure it’s possible she’s made a mistake since then.

I don’t usually like to quote Fox News but I saw this guy speaking earlier and wanted to find his quote:

Al Lewis, Dow Jones  columnist, pointed out to Fox News, “He’s not accused of anything improper in this article, he’s just accused of being a sap. I think he had the best interest of the school district at heart when he did this, and it’s only in retrospect that we can look back and go ‘wow that was a bad deal!’

    1. I think it will come out that none of them (including Bennet) knew what they were doing, and that the district would have been better off with a more standard alternative.

The big lesson from that will be we need a board that has the time and knowledge to do its job effectively. And we need them to focus on that job.

      1. DPS was under pressure to merge their pension with PERA.

That refinancing existing debt when adding new debt was the right move. That the debt structure chosen was complicated- which added administrative and accounting expense.

And that in the primary of choice, one candidate’s campaign decided to shriek and yell about it without understanding.

It will happen in the general too – and it will happen late because it’s hard to understand and if it comes up early it will be possible to explain in a way that takes time.

  5. From what I’m told the NY Times author talked to most of the board members most of whom had a political agenda. Is it natural that those who think Bennet did a good job are supporting and defending him? Is it natural those who think Bennet did a terrible job are supporting his opponents?

New York Times & Gretchen Morgenson: The paper of record, Pulitzer prize winning writer who was one of the top journalists on Greece’s bankruptcy, Goldman Sachs’ misdeeds and a host of other financial matters.

Denver Post: Endorsed Bennet and has made no secret in their editorials or choice of headlines that they are firmly behind Bennet.

Let’s review the DPS Board,  Admin & Players:

Tom Boasberg: Childhood friend of Bennet, hired without a national search, major donor and fundraiser/bundler for Bennet who was directly involved in the financing. Close with the so-called “Billionaire Boys Club” of DFER along with Bennet. Works for the Board but has a tendency to call them “disgruntled” as if they are his employees.

Jeanne Kaplan: Supporter of Romanoff, make that uber-supporter. Max donor to Romanoff. According to Fox 31 where  she showed 2 years of emails about the financing, she’s been asking questions for at least a year and a half.

Andrea Merida: Hell-raiser since she got elected and sworn in. Went on Romanoff’s payroll for a couple months.

Teresa Pena: Long-time personal friend of Bennet, Treasurer of his campaign, fundraiser for Bennet. Frequently votes against any open hearings into either the PCOP financing or the PERA/DPSRS condition. Spends a lot of time at board meetings either texting Boasberg or pretending to check her calendar on her blackberry which has actually been turned off but she says her schedule is too booked to hold public hearings (public access television and Tivo are great!)

Nate Easley: Bennet supporter, vocally opposed to Kaplan & Merida’s attempts to focus Board time on the financing or pensions. Elected on an outsider campaign, quickly joined the coalition supporting anything Boasberg wants.

Arturo Jimenez: No clue on this guy. Looks like he has not given to or openly supported either candidate in the race but frequently votes with the “minority.”

Bruce Hoyt: Investment banker with close ties to Bruce Benson, Boasberg and Bennet. Major supporter and fundraiser for Bennet.

Mary Seawell: Fundraising host, contributor and supporter of Bennet. Has yet to explain why several well-connected financial types with ties to Bennet, Boasberg, Bennet, Hoyt & Benson dropped over $200,000 into her campaign for the Board in large single checks.

Jill Conrad: Gone from the Board but still wanting, really wanting to be relevant and in with the establishment. Quickly sent out an email of “her take” on the NY Times story. Her take? Well that was easy to formulate. She copied and pasted what Kincaid sent out (when he told reporters “The New York Times is Bullshit”). What had Kincaid sent out? What Boasberg wrote and sent out which Kincaid copied and pasted to send out.

DFER (aka the Hedge Fund Billionaire Boys Club), Stand For Children, Colorado League of Charter Schools, KIPP, A+, EdNewsColorado: All groups who argue for more charter schools, all groups who supported Bennet at DPS and all with staff who are either donating, fundraising or supporting and defending Bennet.
