What you can do to fight back this Thanksgiving

We’re down to the last six weeks of 2019, but from Denver to D.C. there’s little sign of a slowdown for the holidays. Locally, progressive lawmakers are hard at work getting ready to keep promises in the next legislative session to pass a paid family leave program and introduce a public option for health coverage to keep bringing down the cost of care after major reforms last year.

In Washington, Colorado’s progressive leaders in Congress are preparing to hold President Donald Trump accountable by filing articles of impeachment. It’s an historic time to be involved in politics to be sure.

Meanwhile, Colorado’s junior U.S. Senator Cory Gardner has been doing everything he can to stay in hiding. Gardner’s steadfast support for Trump puts him at odds with the overwhelming majority of Coloradans. A majority of Coloradans support impeachment, but Gardner doesn’t represent our values anymore. And rather than face the accountability that awaits Cory Gardner every time he appears publicly in an unscripted forum, Gardner has ducked the voters he has a duty to represent for almost two years.

Action item #1 this week: join our friends at Indivisible Front Range Resistance and Indivisible Denver this Wednesday to mark two years since Sen. Cory Gardner’s last town hall. After meeting up outside Cory Gardner’s downtown Denver audience, range out across downtown in search of the real (Cardboard) Cory! It’s a great chance to help educate voters about Gardner’s record.

DACA Case Debrief

They Belong Here Rally: Yuri Vannessay Guiterrez & Grace

Yuri Vannessay Guiterrez & her daughter Grace Guiterrez are in danger of deportation. They fled Honduras 5 months ago to escape domestic violence and abuse. At this particularly vulnerable time, they are in great need of support and love frothier community. Please join us in an act of care and solidarity by being with us tomorrow before they enter court proceedings. We will be accompanying them with signs, banners, and have a short program before they go in. Thank you!

Alianza NORCO: Thank You City Council / Gracias Al Ayuntamiento

Our Fort Collins City Council passed a resolution in October to stand against inhumane treatment of immigrants at the border and in detention centers. The resolution won’t change policy, but is a symbolic show of support for our immigrant community and the greater struggle for immigrant rights. It is a way for them to speak their values and push for reforms to our national immigration policy, and an acknowledgment that cruelty anywhere affects all of us. Join us as we thank them for their show of empathy and courage, especially as hate-filled voices have risen against them!

Transgender Day of Remembrance

Every year since 1999 the transgender community around the world has come together on November 20th to honor those that have lost their lives to anti-transgender violence by celebrating Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR). So far this year, 21 transgender individuals have been murdered due to their perceived gender identity and pervasive transphobia. TDoR acts as an event for the transgender community to come together to mourn and honor the lives lost over the past year and to put a spotlight on the plight faced by the trans community.

Zero Weeks Screening: America’s Family Leave Crisis

87% of Colorado workers don’t have access to paid time off to welcome a new child, care for a sick loved one, or recover from a personal illness. Join the Colorado FAMLI Coalition for a screening of Zero Weeks- a documentary on the challenges posed by the absence of a paid family leave policy in our nation. Light refreshments will be provided. Learn how you can take action to fight for paid leave in Colorado. Because no one should have to choose between their job, their health, and their family.

Affordable Housing Advocacy with Senator Julie Gonzales

For the November YIMBY meetup we will be back at The Goods and will have Senator Julie Gonzales of Denver talk about her work to overturn the Telluride decision, which bans most mandatory affordability strategies by even calling land use planning rent control. Being able to incorporate mandatory affordability was a crucial component of Minneapolis’ bill to end single unit only zoned lots city wide. We hope you will join us to learn about this important bill!

Saturday Postcard Event in SoBo Lucky’s Market Cafe

Every Saturday, we invite activists as well as political, municipal and school board candidates to come mingle and do something meaningful together: writing postcards! This Saturday, we will be writing holiday postcards for detainees in Aurora Immigration Detention Center. Let’s send some holiday cheers to detained immigrants and show them that 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲.

Not In My Backyard Town Hall

Join subject matter experts to ask questions about the current state of immigration on the southern border and the detention centers where migrants are being held, like the one here in Aurora. We will be tackling issues of human rights, due process, and privately owned detention centers. We are here as a community concerned about the conditions our friends in the GEO Center are enduring. We hope to learn about some practical things we can do to ensure that human rights abuses are not occurring in our backyard.
