Romanoff on Financial Reform Bill: We Didn't Finish the Fight

  • by: RomanoffForColorado

There’s a big difference between bragging about reform and delivering it. While Congress congratulates itself on a job half-done, America’s families and our finances remain at risk.

This fight is not over. We need stiffer spines in Washington and stronger reform on Wall Street.

When I am in the U.S. Senate, I will fight to restore a Glass-Steagall wall between commercial and investment banking. I will fight to bring derivatives into the light of day — and close the loopholes that contributed to this calamity. And I will fight to prevent banks from ever becoming too big to fail.

Senator Bennet and a majority of his colleagues refused to take these steps. These senators are among the biggest beneficiaries of Wall Street cash. The concessions they made to their corporate contributors leave Main Street vulnerable to another collapse.

About Andrew Romanoff:

Elected to four terms in the Colorado legislature, Andrew Romanoff was Speaker of the House from 2005 to 2009. He led the Democrats to their first back-to-back majorities in more than 40 years.  His leadership earned national recognition, including Governing magazine’s top honor as Public Official of the Year.

      1. that he helped author Ref. C, has been an outspoken champion on healthcare and financial reform, but who wants to be picky?

Romanoff is shining light on a bad system (and bad votes from Bennet) that are helping big corporations instead of people.  I’m happy to see him doing it.

          1. of deflection instead of engagement.  For what it’s worth, Romanoff did champion legislation in the statehouse that levied serious penalties against insurance companies that didn’t pay out to policy holders.

That said…the Romanoff campaign posted a statement about how Bennet abandoned finance reform and sided with big banks…again.  Anything to dispute on that?

            1. that’s not true healthcare reform and you know it. How about universal coverage? How about Massaachutes type of true reform. Other states have at least tried. Talking is cheap.

              1. and true reform needs to come at a national level — not a state level.

So back to this diary which focuses on financial reform…Bennet is still voting against people and for big banks — a point I know you want to ignore.

                1. reform when he was in a position to do so. Other states acted before national reform. So easy to sit back and crticize and do nothing.   Like I said talk is cheap and that’s about all that comes from the AR campaign.

                  1. of voting to kick people out of their homes, voting against actual banking reform, and otherwise voting in the interest of his corporate masters.

                    1. or to bring up Romanoff’s record, or to bring up any vetting of what Romanoff says.

It’s been that way since September.

Since he has raised so little, the blogs are full of Romanoff fanatics posting their own particular brand of hate. Check out huffpo for more.

                    2. is the damage AR has done to his reputation statewide among many active Dems.

Before this current campaign, I think it is fairly safe to say Romanoff had the respect and support of the majority of Dems statewide.

He comes across as whiny and it appears the basis for his current campaign is that he felt he was entitled to this senate seat because he played an active part in the Democratic party as an elected official.

Over the years, I have known many elected Dems that would never have presumed to be that arrogant. These people held office based on beliefs and ideals, not on name recognition.

Also, it is important that AR was active in the DLC. The DLC damaged the Democratic party by trying to make it into Republican lite- with no true identity. DLC members have never been progressive.

                    3. It’s probably also safe to say Romanoff will have at least the support of the majority of active, assembly-going Dems statewide, too. So let’s not be too hasty.

                    4. From the beginning the Bennet campaign has acknowledged that Romanoff would get the top line at the state assembly. But that leads to another question. With all his connections and statewide name recognition, why doesn’t he do better in the polls?

                    5. In this campaign he has lost much of it.

I don’t see how he can win the general when he acknowledges that he needs Bennet supporters to fund it if he should win the primary. He states this even after all but calling a very fine man corrupt with no evidence whatsoever (see the Statesman articles.)

The PAC position is a gimmick. He plans on his staff approaching the same people that donate to PACS, and asking them to make personal contributions. The individuals’ political postions would not have changed an iota.

Contrary to staff and supporters, he did claim to be a civil rights attorney to the brother of my best friend at the Adams County Chili cook off. I was there the day he did it.I wasn’t standing with Andrew and Elvis at the time. I was at the table when Elvis returned and announced that AR was a civil rights attorney, I told him that he wasn’t licensed. I told Elvis that I would prove it.  It took my directing Elvis Boling to the SOS site and searching for AR’s name and not finding it to prove that he had no license. A supporter of his has said that AR never said he was a licensed attorney.  Introducing oneself as “a civil rights lawyer that fights for people like you”  whie failng to mention that a person hasn’t passed the bar is wrong. It’s like Pres. Clinton saying it depends on what the definition of “is” is.

In paralegal school, this is drilled into the mind more than anything else. One does not claim to be able to give legal advice in any capacity unless one is a licensed attorney.

I didn’t really get extremely upset about this until I witnessed, and copied posts on FB from Vincent Rousseau (an AR supporter)that stated that AR had worked as a lawyer for the SPLC.I’ve been associated with the SPLC for years. I knew this not to be true. I told Vincent in that thread that he couldn’t have as it would have been illegal.Debbie Fischer chimed in on that exchange and very nervously stated that I should file a complaint if I thought that was the case. She also insulted me personally telling me that I needed more rest.I had two seizures in December.

She compeltely missed the point. Someone told Vincent that information. It became clear to me that the AR cmap was putting this very bad information out, and didn’t stop until I made it an issue.

AR’s civil rights background is thin. He spent 3 months at age 21 at the SPLC. While the Anglo majority might think that activiy makes a life long advocate, people that have lived their whole lives with minorities know thaat this is just a beginning.Coupling his statements from the 2006 special session with the actual legislation, it was clear to me that he threw people under the bus for political expediency. It’s similar to his backing the Iraq war at the time in the state house. Efforts to rewrite history have failed. They usually do.

My friend John Wren was slandered for questioning why Denver Dems held a fundraiser at the same date, time , and place as a cancelled county party meeting.

Brandon Shaffer was called a fascist for praising Michael Bennet for being a family man. It’s the first time in my memeory that a candidate was criticized for being praised for being a good father and husband.

Andrew ROmanoff has adopted the ends justify the means as his postion on his campaign. We may well lose the Senate seat, and other races down ticket will suffer funding problems as well for the bitter, divisive campaign that he and his people have run.

I’ll be voting for Michael Bennet today because he tells the truth. One may not always agree with reasons for his voting the way he does, but he doesn’t dissemble and spin.

                    6. but I heard Andrew tell the assembly today that, should he lose the primary, he wanted all his supporters to support Sen. Bennet. I was out of the arena for the first thirty (or so) seconds of Senator Bennets’ speech, but I did not hear him make the same request of his people.

                      and this:

We may well lose the Senate seat, and other races down ticket will suffer funding problems as well for the bitter, divisive campaign that he and his people have run.

is known as “revolving bullshit”. That is…bullshit anyway you look at it.

                    7. In fact, I spoke with Senator Bennet at the assembly, shook his hand, and told him that, should he prevail, I will support him with the same fervor I now apply to Andrews’ candidacy. It is too bad that many of the Senators’ supporters aren’t as gracious and honorable as is the Senator himself.

You may make all the insinuations and accusations you wish, and I respect your right to do so, but your blanket condemnation of AR and your claim that Andrew “has adopted the ends justify the means as his postion on his campaign”, is simply not true.

I have stated before that I am volunteer on ARs’ campaign. I have spoken with him and his campaign staff on many occasions and the attitude you portray simply isn’t there. Of course, there are fired up supporters in both campaigns that let their emotions get the best of them and we are all subject to the vagaries of human frailty. Hence, overstepping our good sense and engaging in unreasoned hyperbole exists on both sides. It is inexcusable in any circumstance, but perfectly natural.

In short, Ray, any good camper knows that if you want the campfire to go out…you have to stop throwing wood on it.

                      Peace.

                    8. If you think Andrew’s calling in to question Sen Bennet’s integrity at the Colorado Springs debate, the Stateman articles, and the dissembling isn’t true, then you have been in never, neverland.

Perhaps your attacks on me are just another assignment or favor requested.

Andrew’s speech yesterday was classsic double- speak.  The blog attacks here, on Huff post, and square state were horrible the last few days.

It’s unfortunate that a strategy of good cop /bad cop has been there since September.

Michael Bennet is a man of integrity. I agree with you on that. It’s unfortunate that the Romanoff campaign creates fantasy bribery stories.

                    9. You are suffering from some serious paranoia here:

Perhaps your attacks on me are just another assignment or favor requested.

Clearly, your zeal has clouded your judgement. I have no desire to trade punches with you. It is a waste of time, as it appears you have no interest in reasoned discussion. I will not debate a man who wears war paint. It is pointless.

                    10. Either the Romanoff camp wants party unity, or they want trash talkers like you.

You are just another anonymous ,hate filled shill.

I guess false bribery charges  work for you.

                    11. Oh, BTW. I am hardly anonymous. The name is Duke Cox. I guess you have missed the couple of dozen times I (and others) have used my name here.

I encourage you to keep your present attitude. It is a great asset for the Romanoff campaign.

                      Stay sweet.
