Gilpin Comm. Jeanne Nicholson Announces for SD-16

( – promoted by Colorado Pols)

Gilpin County Commissioner Jeanne Nicholson announced last weekend (Feb. 26) that she was running for the open SD-16 seat being vacated by State Sen. Dan Gibbs.

From the press release published in the Weekly Register-Call and Gilpin County News:

Today, Senate President Brendan Shaffer endorsed Nicholson and said, “I’m very excited Jeanne has decided to run for the state Senate. Both as a nurse and a Gilpin County Commissioner she has seen first hand the difficulties working people in this state are going through. She’ll go to the statehouse to represent Colorado families, not special interests. I’m proud to support her candidacy.”

Betty Boyd, Colorado Senate President Pro-Tem said in her endorsement, “I have known Jeanne for many years having worked side-by-side in previous campaigns. She represents her constituents well and will be a wonderful addition to the Colorado Senate, particularly given her extensive experiences in health and human services.”

Commissioner Nicholson has extensive knowledge of the district, being extensively involved in Colorado County Commissioners, Inc..  Her work as a County Commissioner earned her the County Commissioner of the Year award from CCCI in 2005.

Her initial endorsement list is huge; she has gained the backing of much of the Democratic side of the Colorado State Legislature and the endorsement of Congressman Jared Polis, who helped kick off her campaign.

She’ll be touring the region in the upcoming months – she’s already been to Summit and Grand County.  In Gilpin County, she runs regular listening sessions outside of the commissioner’s meetings, and she has walked pretty much the entirety of our county – off-the-beaten-track houses included. I’m sure the district will be seeing a lot of her during the campaign season and after she’s elected.

  1. Let me just say that I endorse Jeanne wholeheartedly.  I’m very happy that Jeanne is running to fill this seat – she’s got great qualifications and a positive, can-do outlook that will serve the district and our state well.

On her watch, Gilpin County installed a bio-mass heating system for our new road&bridge building that has practically eliminated heating costs for the building and has provided a needed outlet for pine beetle logs and other otherwise wasted wood trash.

She has been heavily involved in Colorado County Commissioners, Inc. and was named 2005 County Commissioner of the Year; that involvement has brought her into close contact with issues throughout the district.  Her involvement in state health, environmental, and planning issues will be valuable in her representation of our district and in moving our state forward as we come out of this recession.

  2. She has shown a remarkable grasp of the complex issues that shape Wildlands Urban Interface (WUI) areas in the SD 16 district.

She was instrumental funding the Gilpin County bio-mass collection site for slash and beetle infested hot logs and pushed to add a state of the art bio-mass heating system to the new Road and Bridge building which has won sustainable design awards.  She helped get the Gilpin County Community Wildfire Protection Plan developed and approved and the first CWPP fire mitigation projects will be funded this year.

While she has been commissioner the gaming industry has become a steady tourism industry and a reliable economic engine.

I like her ethics and am planning on contributing to her campaign.  She should run a strong campaign and be a worthy candidate.

  3. Phoenix – for future reference – the association is Colorado Counties, Inc.  There’s nothing in the name that includes the word “commissioners” even though that’s who the organization represents.  And Jeanne has been an outstanding member of CCI, including several years at the Chair of the CCI Health and Human Services Committee, as well as heading a sub-committee on behavior health and dual-diagnosis, as well as early childhood issues.  She’s an example of the very best in politics.
