I Want to Vent

  • by: MADCO

But I cannot.

Let me just say this: I have detailed facts about something that happened in the past 30 hours that  would support opinions I and others have expressed on CoPols.com in the past year.

I will post when one of three things happens.

Someone attempts to deny it for any reason: directly to anyone involved, in response to someone else posting here or elsewhere, as a preemptive attempt to frame the story, as a way to get out in front of it, whatever. Leave it alone and I will too, unless;

Anyone attempts to use the story to embarrass, annoy or otherwise hurt* my friend. (The main reason I’m not posting now is I can’t write it in a way that precludes that).

Events render it meaningless. As defined by me, of course.

I’ve written my account. I’ve confirmed it with multiple, separate, documented sources who will confirm my account now and in the future. Email and text messages live forever.  I will reference this post if or when I ever post it.    And for those involved who do not count me as friend, I have nothing against you personally. I may not even know you.  I am frustrated it happened, but politics is a contact sport and it is not surprising when contact occurs, especially when people play it poorly.  But don’t fuck with my friend, you a-holes.  Good people are good people and when you screw with them you have earned the blowback, no matter how disproportionate the shitstorm may appear to you.

  1. I will post when one of three things happens.

Someone attempts to deny it for any reason ..

    .

OK, I’ll bite. I deny it ever happened. You are delusional. Stop making things up, MADCO!

  2. The fact that, much to the dismay of many politicos, bloggers do in fact have friends. They also go outside, wear clothing while they blog, and many even live and write in places other than their grandparents basements.

    1. We always thought bloggers lived in their parents’ basements.

If this post involves inside information on McInnis shaving his moustache and dying his hair, we’re very excited.

    1. Then I’d know the exact color reference to match, and I’d get everyone to dye their head the exact same color. Of course, we’d bet on the Nuggets making it to the finals or something.

        1. But i’m guessing eyebrows and …. you know…. other places.

ANd you could dye your scalp.  I did it a coupl of St Patty’s days back when I had no hair

  3. When I started my company I was going to blog about it fully & honestly. And to take ownership of all mistakes I made.

The problem is, most of the interesting stuff is mistakes, and mistakes truly do have many fathers (and mothers). And so writing about all that means along with pinging myself, I would also be pinging others.

MADCO faces an all too common problem – someone deserves to be called out, but others are hurt in the process. Life sometimes does not give you great options.

  4. That took down the names of the kids cutting up in class when a substitute teacher was present in order to rat everyone out to the regular teacher if you didn’t get your way in everything?  It sure sounds like it.

Whatever is pissing you off so much, spill it already, this site needs a good fight…

    Denver Broncos… Still Suck!

    1. I was the kid who sat in the back and ignored everyone as best I could while reading books.

SRA all the way. Thank god there was no internet or I never would have graduated from anything.

      1. If SRA stands for the self-directed reading assignments (the geeky scientific and social science ones), I am also a fan.  I could use those now.  Love ’em.

    1. The other potential Democratic contender for governor is former state House Speaker Andrew Romanoff. Romanoff is currently challenging first-term Democratic U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet, who was appointed by Ritter to fill the rest of Salazar’s Senate term.

Hickenlooper decided to run for governor on Sunday, and met with Romanoff Monday night, sources told 7NEWS. During the meeting Romanoff pressed for a Romanoff-Cary Kennedy ticket for governor and lieutenant governor. Kennedy is the state treasurer.

      They met again Tuesday morning.

“He never tried to dissuade me from running,” Hickenlooper said. However, he refused to discuss the details of their conversation, saying they have been friends for a long time.

Hickenlooper decided to make the announcement Tuesday to pre-empt any announcement by Romanoff that he would enter the race for Colorado governor, sources said.

  5. So

Sunday afternoon I got a phone call from a friend who works for he Romanoff campaign.

    Paraphrasing closely –

Him: Hey-  can you come to Romanoff HQ tomorrow a morning for a meeting?

    Me: Uhh… why would I?

Him: I think you will like it- we’ll all have fun and everything will get a lot easier…

Me: Can you give me details?

Him:I got no details but it sounds good.

    Me: why me?

Him: Well I was told fill the room for an announcement

Me: Well that does sound like fun … how ’bout you fill the room with Romanoff supporters?

Him:   Oh, we will but I was directed to get my Bennet supporter friends in here.

Me: Umm… ok I’ll see you there

I called a mutual friend- right to voice mail.

I waited a few minutes – called again.  Same call, same invite – and we agreed to carpool

Within the hour we three shared a group email about what time to meet and made lunch plans for after.

An hour after that we two got un-invited.

    Why? What happened?

Him: I was told I misunderstood, that there was no announcement, just a planning meeting and more canvassing calls and same old same old.

He was pretty pissed – he didn’t misunderstand. But the campaign was getting contacted about the invites to Bennet supporters and volunteers and word was spreading and, something changed and my friend was getting dumped on.

Now, it occurred to me that it could have been a head fake or some other gamesmanship. But not this friend. More heart than head, yes. Mean spirited lying jerk- no way.

I confirmed the same invite/un-invite with three separate people. I have emails, voice mails and texts. We were invited for an important “announcement” from the Romanoff campaign. And then got un-invited.

And I was prepared to let it go.

But then about 6pm Sunday, I got another email from someone else from the Romanoff office that I don’t know too well. The message was a vague, hey you know so&so, not the always the sharpest….blah blah misunderstood…etc and yada …he wouldn’t even know if there was anything to talk about which there is not  and never was… he’s just going to embarrass himself and … there was nothing and it was just a misunderstanding… about nothing, cause there was nothing to misunderstand…

It felt and sounded a lot like – move along, nothing to see here and the implication was that my friend was going to get painted as either a leak or a liar.  Neither of which is true.

And then today we get the big news, and 7News posted the following story- which has changed at least once since it went up.

    http://www.thedenverchannel.co

    Tension Between Hickenlooper, Romanoff?

I can tell my friend is not the quoted source.

And there was another story –  I can’t find right now perhaps on the Post? – that confirmed AR was consulting with other D’s all weekend avout quitting the Senate race and announcing for Gov. Perhaps in the same story where Rep Pace confirmed that he and Romanoff agreed that a D primary would b a bad thing.

The way it appears to me is that after days of calling other

elected D’s and testing the waters to quit the Senate race and switch to governor, Romanoff had decided to do it.  He put out the word, invited us to his HQ Monday am for the “announcement” and then Sunday afternoon un-rang the bell. Maybe Hickenlooper decided and returned his call.  Perhaps he lost  a bet on the Ravens game.

He meets with Hickenlooper Monday and unsuccessfully pitches the idea of Romanoff for Gov instead. And he wakes up Tue and learns with the rest of us that Hick is in.

What pisses me off is not that he evaluated, made a decision and then unmade it. Shit happens, and it sounds like the past 12 months for him.

What pisses me off is my friend did everything right.  More heart than head, sure. But when he got the call, he showed up for all the right reasons – loyalty, he likes AR, didn’t know Bennet, etc.

He is also practical enough to acknowledge he will support the D nominee whomever it is. You can’t dump on the  lowest rung kind of staff and hope it goes unnoticed or unrewarded.  It was unnecessary and inappropriate.   And while I believe the dumping and embarrassing was not coming from AR – I don’t see that in him – it never should have happened.

The message should have been- there was a misunderstanding but it wasn’t your friend’s fault, he’s great, we love him and we’re all D’s now.

And you you can’t unring the bell.  Forks were called for long ago. Sunday it was confirmed – this campaign is over.

    1. The 7 NEws story linked above mentioned a Romanoff/Kenedy ticket and that Romanoff was pushing it.

I contacted Kennedy for Treasurer because even though we’re all focused on Gov and Senate, the Treasurer race would obviously be affected.

There has been that rumor. Cary is in full support of Mayor Hickenlooper and ready to be as helpful as she can for his Governor’s race.

      Hollie

      1. …and for your cloak-n-dagger tale.  What was that yarn about “oh what a tangled web we weave when at first we want everything and anything at the same time?”  That rings true somehow.

  6. I can’t comment on it any further to protect the parties involved.

I respect Andrew Romanoff. I have said it 100 times, and I will say it again.  When he does finally get into office again, he will do a great job, whatever it is. My support for Senator Bennet does not diminish my respect for Andrew, legislatively speaking.

HOWEVER (you knew there had to be one, right?)… his lack of campaign wisdom shocks me.

For someone who has successfully won race after race in this state, he has made some horrible political decisions this past year.  1 – Jumping into a Senate race in September, after the very successful Democratic incumbent (with a great voting record, I might add) had accumulated a treasure trove of campaign contributions, knowing that this state is historically a Republican one and a late primary would lead to an overall decrease in DSCC coordinated campaign funds for the Dems.

2 – (Allegedly) Wanting to be Lt. Governor, then complaining he was jilted by Ritter’s pick for Senate. Then, while facing the Dem incumbent in the primary, telling those close to him he “always wanted to be Senator”.  Then, sending out a rumor that he would be abadoning the current race he is in for another race, then rescinding it and declaring he has always been in the correct race, after all. I can only imagine all of this is becoming quite embarrassing to his campaign manager. Wait — does he have a campaign manager? I don’t remember.

My head is spinning. Which job do you want, Mr. Romanoff? Please make up your mind. And if you don’t win the primary, what are your plans? Coloradans want you here, just not in the big 2010 races. We already have two logical candidates. There are plenty of other positions of responsibility to which you would be well-suited.

    1. Before Hick jumped in, I sent a text to one of Romanoff’s people saying I would volunteer if he ran for Governor. Now it is too late to jump in — Hick has the polling advantage, and the grassroots support of most of the state. Who has been advising Speaker Romanoff to take so much time making up his mind? I truly feel sorry for him now.

      1. and get to work.

I pictured him announcing the switch to a room full of re-energized D’s including guys like me who support Bennet for Senate and then would be supporting Romanoff for Gov.

Instead I hear the whistle of a firecracker across the bow and  the promise of unwarranted humiliation for a friend.

C’mon – be better than that.

Oh- and since you have un-quit and are apparently back in this thing for now. Differentiate your candidacy from your opponents means more than pointing out that you wear different ties.

        1. I just received the CO Dem Party Week in Review email and focused on this:

Michael Bennet has hosted meet and greet events all over the state in the last week and has over seven more events scheduled for the next week.

Andrew Romanoff?  Join the Young Dems for Romanoff at headquarters on Saturday from 11am to 8pm.  Pathetic.

              1. He stands for a better healthcare bill.

He stands for bipartisan magic  leaders.

He stands for campaign finance reform.

Hmmm, … gotta be something else, since so far he stands for Bennet.

Oh, of course, he stands for taking PAC money when you’re in a safe district, but not when running statewide in a really hard race.

He is standing near the fork.

  7. the negative and ongoing perception that Romanoff is only running for the Senate because he so desperately wants to be back in the political scene and doesn’t really care which job it is he lands, just as long as he’s in a position of prominence. To even consider switching to Governor after his feverish rhetoric about being the best choice for the Senate and that millions of people were denied their chance to vote for their Senator? Lame as hell. Yet, the second it looked like the Governor’s seat might open up, he’s all willing to tell the masses to fuck off because he’s moving on to a better opportunity.

Way to stay classy, Andrew. And your staff could certainly learn a lesson in how not to throw someone under the bus.

    1. I actually would have supported him switching before Hick announced.  I had fool proof messaging too.

But now that messaging isn’t that great, though I still think he should switch. Primaries are a good thing. It will benefit them both to get bloodied in a primary.

Of course, he’ll still have to raise $10-12million to be viable. ANd differentiate himself from an opponent who is virtually the same on issues. And find better messaging than it was ok to take PAC money when he did it, but it’s not ok now that he can’t get any.  Fork, please.

As for that bus, my guess is no one will be calling me anytime soon.

      1. he was stepping down. Yes, it would have solved several problems but it would also have been clear cut proof that he is nothing more than a political opportunist. Oops. I guess he just proved exactly that, didn’t he?

      2. how Romanoff loves to talk about how great primaries are for the party, unless he is running against Hick, who has a high favorability rating with all demographic groups, and name recognition to make any candidate envious?
